  • #086 Save Tribe Swimming

William & Mary is considered one of the most prestigious academic schools in the country. You may have heard of some of their famous alumni...

Thomas Jefferson. James Monroe. John Tyler.

America's brightest swimmers don't go to W&M for the scholarships because there are none.

And they certainly don't go for the facilities -- the pool is not worthy of the accomplishments that Tribe Swimming has achieved.

They attend W&M because the people that go to W&M are a special kind of people. One could say they are from the same Tribe...

Brett welcomes Rich Williams from the W&M Class of '98 on the podcast to help spread the word to SAVE TRIBE SWIMMING!

  • #085 Jonty Skinner

Jonty Skinner didn't get to swim at the 1976 Olympics because South Africa was banned. But a few weeks after the Olympics ended, he broke Jim Montgomery's world record in the 100 Free by over half a second.

Jonty left South Africa to swim for the University of Alabama where he was an NCAA Champion under Don Gambril. Over the next decades he would have several coaching stints at Bama as well as time spent with USA Swimming as the National Team Head Coach and Director of Performance Science and Technology. He was inducted into the ASCA Hall of Fame in 2017.

If you've never been to Alabama before...nothing is more important than War Eagle vs. Roll Tide.

The former rival coaches in the great state of Alabama discuss...

In 1976, you were not allowed to compete at the Olympics. How'd that feel? South Africa had been banned since 1964.

"It didn't bother me that much...I knew growing up it wasn't going to happen." - Jonty Skinner

Don Gambril told me I needed a year to adapt to the training. "I was a 2."

Being relieved after breaking the world record. What helped me remember was listening to Mel Stewart interview BJ Bedford.

Finding each athlete's motivation. Improving each athlete on a holistic level. Really get to know them.

Creating a seasonal plan and understanding what goes into that. One of the best pieces of advice Brett got as a young coach from David Marsh.

When does the book come out?! Maybe next summer.

Zane Waddell calls Jonty a wizard. How do you get wizard status?

What are the must haves, the must dos for a swim coach?

    1. understand them as a person
    2. study them as a swimmer
    3. educate them about the sport of swimming

I love speed and I love freestyle: so how do we get faster? Can we go 20.0 and 46.0 in the 50 and 100?

The evolution of freestyle. Stuck in high elbow. Tech suits came around and blew that out of the water.

    Caeleb Dressel.

How do you coach an athlete to believe they can beat the unbeatable?

    Never met Nick Saban.

    And much more!

  • #084 Yannick Agnel

In 2012, Yannick Agnel dominated the 200 Free at the London Olympics. So when he abruptly retired at the age of 24, it was a shock to the swimming world. He left to pursue his other curiosities. Today, living in Paris, Yannick is the director for an esports academy, just finished his first novel, and will lead the French broadcasting team for Tokyo 2020.

    Show Notes:

How do you have such great English? Can speak a little bit of everything.

"I don't like to study, I like to learn." - Yannick Agnel

    Pre-2012.

Watching him in 2000, Ian Thorpe was his first memory of swimming.

Grew up in Nimes. Moved to Nice swim for Fabrice Pellerin.

What was training like? Swimming with music that would have specific tempos. "Technically speaking, I think it was one of the best squads in the world." - Yannick Agnel

Didn't start lifting weights and doing serious drylands until he was 16, 17.

Fabrice is a master technician -- the best in the world. We did stuff in France that nobody did back then. We swam on Sundays.

Coach-Athlete Relationship: it can bring great success but not enduring success.

Leading up to 2012 how were you mentally. Finding a balance between swimming and life by going to business school.

Beating Phelps in the 200 Free at the EDF meet in 2010. "I never let anyone beat me ever no matter what shape I'm in." - Michael Phelps

Arriving at the Olympics Yannick wasn't afraid. His training partners already prepared him and he knew his worth.

Anchoring the gold medal winning 4x100 Free Relay. "Relay Culture".

Fabien Gilot. Amaury Leveaux was our Dennis Rodman.

Using practice goggles at the Olympics prevented Agnel from seeing past Ryan Lochte.

The 1992 Barcelona Olympic Champion in the 200 Fly. One of the Founders of Swim Swam. Better known as GOLD MEDAL MEL.

Bring me back to Gastonia, North Carolina and how you got into swimming.

Were you being pushed by your parents? Extremely successful age group swimmers don't always become Olympic gold medalists. Performing for your parents approval. 11 sessions a week but not until high school.

"I want to answer you: I was never challenged." - Mel Stewart

Growing up in Heritage USA, the Christian city and theme park. Mel used swimming as a getaway and eventually escaped to Mercersburg Academy. He went from ranked 32nd in the world to 7th to 2nd in just a couple years under John Trembley.

"I wanted to go to Cal." - Mel Stewart

Mel chose to swim at Tennessee under John Trembley.

1988 Olympic Trials. Won Trials -- one tenth off Pablo Morales' record.

1988 Seoul Olympics were,  "a very big bed shitting" according to Mel.

Got to Tennessee, started lifting heavy, and was in the distance lane.

"How do we unravel this ball of wax?" - Mel Stewart on John Trembley

John Trembley tried to get Brett banned from the NCAA.

Turning pro after his Junior year. Signed with Power Bar got his endorsements.

Expected to swim for JT leading up to 1992 but he left instead. JT did camps in the summer and thus wasn't coaching Mel in the summers ever.
