In this episode, I spoke with Mario Jacob, the former owner of D&J Apiary, who recently sold his company and comfortably retired at a younger age, proving that it is still possible to make a good living from honey bees. Mario was a board member of the American Beekeeping Federation, among many other accolades. In this conversation, we discussed the secrets to becoming a successful commercial beekeeper, his favorite business model, and the constant challenges faced by commercial beekeepers in the U.S.

In today's episode, I speak with Dr. Jeff Pettis, former research leader of the USDA Beltsville lab and current president of Apimondia. Jeff and I have worked together for a long time, first when he was my boss at the USDA, and later on several projects related to honey bee health. We discussed our time in Thailand, where he introduced me to the subject of today's podcast episode: Tropilaelaps, a mite with the potential to be a bigger problem than Varroa mites. I hope you enjoy our conversation. We talked about his career working with social insects and also discussed his latest research publication on honey bees. The publication reveals that varroa mites, an important pest of honey bees, feed differently depending on the life stage of the parasitized honey bee. This discovery is significant as it greatly enhances our understanding of the life cycle of this important honey bee pest, which causes significant damage to the beekeeping industry. I want to thank our academy members for their support and you for watching.

Dr. Boncristiani discusses the research in detail, explaining how the mites primarily feed on the fat bodies of adult bees but adjust their diet to hemolymph when feeding on pupae. The video emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of mite feeding behavior to develop effective control strategies. Join Dr. Boncristiani as he delves into the fascinating world of honey bee research and encourages viewers to keep an open mind to new scientific discoveries. The podcast discusses the evolution of defense mechanisms against Varroa mites in honey bee colonies. It highlights the concept of social immunity and the resistance of certain honey bee populations to Varroa destructor. The study by Dr. Melissa Oddie explores the behavior of uncapping and recapping brood as a potential mechanism for disrupting mite reproduction and improving colony survival. This finding provides valuable insights for queen breeders in selecting bees with enhanced resistance to Varroa mites.
