Celebrating 50 years in the beekeeping industry, Mike Palmer, a famous beekeeper in Vermont State, walked through his apiary with Dr. Humberto Boncristiani for an interview on the InsideTheHive.tv podcast. The two discussed the changes in the beekeeping industry over the last 50 years, including the shift from American foulbrood to trachea mites and later on Varroa mites. The conversation also touched on the effects of pesticides on bee populations, with Mike sharing his concerns about the high levels of atrazine and other herbicides found in pollen samples collected from hives in row crop agriculture areas.

For a long time, Mike didn't believe pesticides were affecting his colonies, but this is not the case anymore. Mike described why he changed his mind and explained why he thinks pesticides are indeed a big problem for beekeepers.

Mike also shared his approach to beekeeping, which includes the use of dedicated brood factories to rapidly expand the brood nest. These factories are not meant to produce honey but to quickly grow the population of nurse bees. By using this method, Mike can maintain high production levels without having to use production hives to stop his cell builders.

BREAKING NEWS! Neonicotinoids banned in New York State  The New York State Legislature has passed the Birds and Bees Protection Act, which limits the use of neonicotinoid pesticides, commonly referred to as neonics. This bill is the first of its kind in the United States and aims to reduce the use of neonic coatings on corn, soybean, and wheat seeds, as well as lawn and garden uses.  

Neonics are known to have a devastating impact on pollinators such as bees and birds, and have been linked to negative impacts on human health and the environment. The pesticides are believed to have caused massive bee and bird losses, contaminated water and soil, and created human health concerns.  

The new bill eliminates 80-90% of neonics entering New York's environment on a yearly basis and has gained support from a wide range of environmental, health, garden, social justice, and farm groups.  The bill still permits the use of neonics for invasive species treatments, but this is expected to eliminate 80-90% of neonics entering New York's environment each year.

While the Birds & Bees Protection Act does not go as far as Europe's total outdoor neonic ban, and Canada has largely phased out neonic-coated corn and soybean seeds, it is the first law to address neonic seed coatings in the U.S.  New York farmers will still be able to grow their staple crops while limiting the damage done to the environment, water quality, and pollinators by neonic pesticides.

Supporters of the bill hope it will help protect New York's environment, food security, and agricultural economy.  The New York State Legislature's decision to regulate neonic pesticides is a significant move forward in promoting sustainable agriculture and protecting the environment.  If you have any questions about this issue, tune in to my podcast where I will interview a lawyer.

Podcast Ep-07 - The American Honey Bee

These show notes provide a background in the genetic study of honey bees. Called by some, the third industrial revolution in agriculture, it features the development of genetically modified organisms and how that topic relates to honey bees.

Determining what makes up the honey bee genome was pioneered by Dr. Gene Robinson, who wrote an article on the subject in the December 2000 Bee Culture Magazine dedicated to the memory of his advisor, Dr. Roger A. Morse. This is summarized in Dr. Sanford’s website.

The identification of the races of honey bees has always been somewhat of a mystery. Historically it was best determined by measuring physical characteristics of various subspecies. Called morphometrics, this was pioneered by Fredrich Ruttner. It has been replaced via determining the genetic haplotype of honey bees, as described in Dr. Alburaki’s publication referenced above, concentrating on lack of genetic diversity in the genome of New World U.S. honey bees, almost all exclusively imported from the Old World.
