There is no holiday more strongly associated with horror, with all things creepy, frightening, and supernatural, than Halloween. It's the time of year when creatures of legend come alive, on tv and movie screens, in kitschy decorations, as suffocating rubber masks in costume shops. Witches and werewolves, zombies and vampires and ghosts all pour out into the streets, heading from door to door to ask for candy and play a few Halloween tricks. But the holiday goes beyond family friendly entertainment like pumpkin carving, haunted hayrides, and trick or treating. It represents a time when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, when dark and mysterious forces can reach across the great divide and take hold.

In the Summer of 2017, Netflix released a film called, “Veronica.” This foreign film quickly became a sensation across the streaming platform as a scary film that people would dare their friends to watch. It evoked memories of “The Exorcist,” a film that felt so real it would unnerve the viewers to the point that they felt compelled to shut it off. Why did it feel so real? Because the film was based on the real story of a woman named, Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro.

In 1998, Jamie Blanks and Silvio Horta released "Urban Legend," a slasher film determined to explore the urban legend in all of its creepy glory. The film features a college campus terrorized by a serial killer whose crimes are inspired by classic urban legends, bringing them to life and turning the legend into a reality. The film was met with mixed reviews, but became enough of a success among its found audience to spawn two sequels: Urban Legends Final Cut and Urban Legends Bloody Mary. But where did the legends come from? Was there ever any truth behind them?

David Fincher's 2007 film, Zodiac, focused on a killer whose identity was shrouded in mystery, who averted capture during the entirety of his reign of terror. He left breadcrumbs for the authorities, taunting them with clues and coded hints, but his crimes are considered some of the most famous unsolved murders in U.S. history. The true horror at the heart of "Zodiac" began with a murder on lovers' lane in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969.

Irish folktales tell of stolen children, whisked away in the dead of night by the fairies. These children were taken to act as servants, to sate the curiosity of fairies curious about human children, or as an act of revenge. In the stolen child's place, they would leave a fairy child that the parents would raise, with no idea that the little one they conceived and gave birth to was long gone...

Jaws is a movie that, perhaps, needs no introduction. Released in 1975, it was the movie that put Steven Spielberg on the map, codified the practice of studios releasing big summer movies, and made generations of people afraid to go in the ocean. The movie was a huge box-office success, but that success has come at a cost...

The earliest known reference to Polybius comes from coinop.org, a forum for arcade cabinet collectors that was active in the early 2000's. There are anecdotal accounts of the game being discussed on usenet forums in 1994, but those have not been confirmed. All we know is, there are no records of the game existing prior to the year 2000. Although it's possible that this is a sign of a complex government cover-up, most folklorists and game historians take it to mean that the game never existed in the first place. But that just begs the question- where did the story come from?

Texarkana is a border town, straddling the line between Texas and Arkansas. Technically, it is made up of two cities that share a name: one in Texas, and one across the border in Arkansas. But when horror came to town on one side of the border, both cities were brought together by a collective held breath, the fear of what would come next. The nightmare began on February 22, 1946...
