  • Spirit of a Hummingbird Book Launch with Felicia Heath
This is a bonus episode to build buzz for my special guest, Debut author Felicia Thai Heath, whose book launches on Tuesday. Grab your favorite snack or drink and come hang out with us as we talk about her writing process and give a few teasers about the inspiration behind the book itself.
Felicia Heath is a triple-board-certified critical care anesthesiologist, blogger, and debut author. She spent a month alone in a studio in the heart of Philadelphia to write the original manuscript of Spirit of a Hummingbird: Memories from a Childhood on the Run, just seventy-two hours after delivering her third child. This left her husband with their two-year-old, one-year-old, and newborn as she drank pinot noir and wrote for days on end. All of it was his idea, which is exactly why she tattooed his name across her shoulder and eloped with him on a South African safari six years ago. Felicia now lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and four children. She practices medicine as she anticipates a shift in the universe with the release of her memoir.
In Spirit of a Hummingbird, Felicia Thai Heath, the daughter of Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants who met in the United States, gives us a disquieting, eventful memoir based on her early childhood on the run with her father—a notorious Vietnamese kingpin and escaped convict—and her conflicted mother. Clever and mature beyond her age, young Felicia experienced poverty and witnessed abuse as her dysfunctional family bounced around in the United States and Canada. Amid all the tumult and terror, she found ways to love her family, educate herself, navigate her world, and discover her potential. Now she must decide how to live with the past—and whether her future can include her father.

  • How Daniel Hess expresses his innermost feelings through writing and filmmaking
This week, my special guest talks about how the inability to participate in sports and other activities, due to a medical condition, and the loss of his brother at an early age, inspired him to use creative arts such as writing and film making as a cathartic way to express his innermost feelings . We talk about how he got into film making, his poetry and the inspiration behind his new novel. Grab your favorite beverage and enjoy the conversation.
Daniel Hess is a filmmaker/writer from Baltimore, Maryland. Born with aortic valve stenosis, Daniel found his focus on academia and creativity developed from a young age. Now in life moving past open heart surgery to replace his valve, he has self-published a collection of poetry (Just a Boy Blaming Himself) and his first novel (Focus Puller) in addition to his screenwriting work.
Focus Puller tells the story of Ben, a filmmaker through non-linear vignettes that have shaped him throughout his entire life. Interspersed throughout the story are moments of reflection from the various women that Ben has had relationships with over the years.

  • Nghi Dang teaches Children about Mental Health through Storytelling
In today’s bonus episode, My special guest shares the inspiration behind his children’s book series, One of which he released last month, and the second he launched this past Sunday. Through these books, he strives to educate children about topics pertaining to mental health.
In the words of Dr. Dang: “I was born in Vietnam but grew up in Southern California. Our family moved to the sates when I was 7 years old. As an immigrant, I shared the same struggles as many other immigrants with adjusting to a new norm and dealing with bullying, discrimination, and constantly having to self-validate while fighting off depression. Having been in practice for over 10 years as a Family Physician, I have seen more and more visits related to mental health in the clinic for both adults and children. I was motivated to do something to help educated children and help start a dialogue between parents and children about mental health. I figured the best way to help educate is through storytelling.”
    Dr. Dang’s series is entitled:
The Adventures of Max and Friends
In this series, we follow Max as he navigates the 6thgrade. He had envisioned the 6th grade to be a great year. But instead, Max finds himself roughed up by his bully and questioning his own identity when he faces multiple setbacks. As the year progressed, Max witnessed his friends overcome their own struggles each growing stronger as a result. In each story, we see that each character faces their own unique challenges from a very different perspective.
The topics covered will range from dealing with bullying, understanding learning disabilities, bouncing back from failure, battling anxiety and depression, standing up to discrimination, learning about cyber predators, and coping with the loss of a loved one.

  • Fiction Versus Nonfiction Editing with Hannah Lyon
This week, I’m in my element, as my special guest and I talk about one of my favorite subjects, editing. We also cover her ghostwriting services and her work on a fantasy trilogy. However, I share a tip with her and I pick her brain about different aspects of editing and championing an author’s story.
Hannah R. Lyon is a professional editor who has assisted dozens of authors in both fiction and nonfiction, polishing their manuscripts to perfection for successful publication. Over the last five years, her quality editing has led to books being featured on #1 bestseller lists both nationally and internationally.
She is President of the Dis-Appropriate Wordsmiths Group, where she mentors other writers in critique, lessons, and goal setting for their individual literary projects. Hannah is a guest expert on the topics of writing and editing at virtual and in-person conferences and writer’s retreats.
She lives with her husband in Salt Lake City, Utah, in an old brick house they remodeled by hand to create their own little castle. Her free time consists of indulging in story-driven video games, listening to and collecting classic rock and roll vinyl, and raising her two elven sprites of daughters.

Those of you who love a bit of mystery with your middle grade fantasy will love it too! • The Story Behind Heaven's Bell with Sherri Barch
This week I had a lovely conversation with my special guest about her book and the story behind it. I hope you find this conversation as much of a blessing as I did.
Sherrie Barch is the CEO of two Forbes’ ranked top executive search firms and a leadership consulting company. An expert in the areas of leadership, team development, and diversity, her forward-thinking approach to work was recognized when she was chosen to participate in the ‘altMBA” program designed and led by leadership guru Seth Godin.

She is currently working on her second book, a business leadership fable designed to help new college graduates navigate the “real life stuff they don’t teach you in school” about career conversations, conflicts, and challenges.
