Most of our culture challenges at work exist because we don’t do the needed relationship work ... consistently.

We’re all responsible for it. But, those in a leadership role have the power to make it much easier by modeling that needed relationship work and connecting more consistently with the people they work with.

But it’s not happening enough and I'm not confident it ever will. Even so, we can put a big positive dent in it (you, me, the people we care about, even those we don't).

It starts by Working Kindly. Here’s how.

I believe all of us know love is critical to that more enjoyable day we all want. 

How can we do a better job with love?

I think it starts by getting rid of the eggshells and then understanding what really goes into loving people.

I love that thought. My 5 favorite consecutive words. 

How wonderful it would be if more of us approached our work with that in mind and reminded ourselves of it throughout the day.

The words come from Kahlil Gibran’s short book of prose poetry called, ‘The Prophet.’ It was first published in 1923. In the book, a prophet named Almustafa is asked to share his wisdom on several topics.

I’d like to share the 7th chapter with you. It’s called ‘On Work.’

I’d like to share with you what I feel is the foundation to everything … the foundation to that more enjoyable day we all want and should have more of.

I once was talking with a group of leaders, sharing the importance of those small, daily interpersonal moments we have with others … those several-times-a-day opportunities we have to better connect with other people.

At the end of the talk someone said…

“This is all great stuff. But when we get back to the office, how do we make sure we actually do it … every day?”

It was written by Henry Van Dyke over 100 years ago (originally published in 1905 by Charles Scribner’s Sons).

Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, it’s an inspiring reminder to make the holiday spirit an all-the-time thing, rather than just a year-end thing.

Imagine if we all reflected on these things once a week.
