Vanessa recommends looking beyond the destinations everyone else is visiting. Some of her favorite fall destinations include Vermont's Green Mountains, New Hampshire's White Mountains, Maine, the Finger Lakes, Michigan, and Door County.

She also highlights the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, including Grand Lake and Granby, as a quieter alternative to Estes Park. For fall foliage, she recommends Mammoth Lakes, California, where aspens create spectacular scenery in early October.
