Non-Profit Leadership is a calling and an opportunity to serve with passion for what matters most. This week on Inspiring Leaders, we learn about authentic leadership from the CEO of the Ottawa Mission, Peter Tilley.

Peter Tilley has served in remarkable roles for decades, including a management role at Quantum Management Services in the 1990s. But in 1994, joined the Ottawa Food Bank as a driver and worked his way up to become their Executive Director, overseeing all aspects of this non-profit that shipped out 8 million pounds of food with a budget of $4M per year, responsible for 25 staff and countless volunteers.

Four years ago Peter began overseeing the Ottawa Mission, including more than 100 employees and a huge team of inspired volunteers. The Mission was founded over a hundred years ago by a group of Christian businessmen who wanted to help others facing difficult times, providing food, shelter and clothing. Today, the Mission is viewed as an important piece of the City’s social fabric. Along with providing shelter for 235 men on a nightly basis and serving 1,200 meals per day, The Mission provides a number of client services that enable men and women to cope with the challenges they face in their everyday lives.

Over the past 15 years The Ottawa Mission has incorporated new programs, such as a Hospice, Addiction Treatment, Client Services Centre, Learning Centre and a Medical/Dental Clinic.

Exploring Healthcare Leadership with Children’s Hospital CEO, Alex Munter.

Twenty years ago Alex was a City Councillor, involved in the move to ban smoking in public places. At the height of this controversial debate, Alex received several death threats, teaching him how to stay resilient and focused on worthy goals.

Now, as a the CEO of a major Children’s Hospital, Alex brings these lessons as well as his amazing energy to tackle the growing issue of Childhood Obesity. We discuss the multiple layers that complicate this issue and what is being done to lead our children and society to a healthier, happier future. His vision of our collective future is truly inspiring and worth hearing.

Alex has over 20 years of leadership in health and social services and a strong commitment to helping families and his community. Alex has been CEO of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for six years. Last year he also became the CEO of the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre (OCTC).

Alex's priorities include expanding services, improving access and making CHEO/OCTC digital health leaders. Under his guidance, Forbes Magazine named CHEO the best place to work in Canadian Healthcare last year and again in 2017.

Teena grew her leadership expertise while serving as a General Manager for over 18 years at Telecommunications giant, Sprint. She has Chaired the Board of Directors for the International Facility Management Association and the Global Facility Management Board of Directors. Both of these Chairperson roles enabled her to influence on an international basis. She has also served as the Vice President of Client Services for Facility Engineering Associates until founding her own company, “FM Transitions” in 2016.

“I just want to be known as someone who has left an imprint on someone else’s life in a positive way.”

But Al was just getting started. After this, he set his sights on the Holy Grail of mountaineering: Climbing the 14 highest mountains on Earth. This is the “BIG 14 CHALLENGE”. Today, Al has climbed 7 of the World’s highest mountains, having just returned from a successful ascent of Lhotse in Nepal, the world’s 4th highest peak.

We sat down with this Extreme Mountaineer to find out what Leadership Lessons we can take from the thin air of the Himalayan Mountains to apply to our Boardrooms and Teams.

Collins persevered and later became a Board Director for the International Facility Management Association.

Today Collins is the CEO of ShelterCareFM based in Abuja, Nigeria. He is a Senior Consultant with over 17 years of international experience in policy design and implementation. He is also a founding partner of the Corporate FM Alliance, a group of international companies working to provide FM and Real Estate services throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Collins is also the current President of the Abuja Chapter of IFMA and Ambassador for Africa for the IFMA Foundation.
