  • Under-reporting fish catches off Africa's coast, Part 2
In yesterday’s report on industrial fishing in African waters, we heard about countries like Kenya, trying to fight illegal fishing.
But sometimes even the boats that are registered to fish, cook the books and alter the amounts of fish they are actually catching.
A recent study reveals that unreported catches have a heavy toll on fisheries in East and West Africa.
A large number of vessels report catching far less than they actually do. And that leaves coastal states shortchanged.
Kyle G. Brown investigates in today’s report - the second in a three part series on industrial fishing in Africa, developed with the support of JournalismFund.EU.

  • Industrial fishing off the African coast, Part 1
Coastal states in East and West Africa are host to rich fisheries, and to the hundreds of foreign fishing vessels they attract. But environmental groups and local fishermen say they sometimes find habitats damaged, dead fish washed up on the shore and nets and equipment destroyed.
Kenyan authorities have long lacked the means to do much about illegal fishing, but they hope a series of new measures will give them greater control over their territorial waters.
Kyle G. Brown investigates the situation off Kenya's coasts, in the first report of a three part series on industrial fishing in African waters - developed with the support of JournalismFund.EU.

  • Same-sex marriage in the Faroe islands
In the remote Faroe Islands the once notoriously homophobic Nordic country has taken a step forward by passing legislation that would allow same-sex marriages.
Hanna Jensen is a Faroese MP and same-sex marriage advocate who was pivotal in passing this law.
Correspondent Joel Carnegie spoke to her at the Faroese pride march and asked her whether it was difficult to convince the people of the conservative Christian country.

  • What happens after eviction from east Jerusalem? Part 2
This week marks the fiftieth anniversary of the six-day war between Israel and its neighbours: Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Israel won a clear victory. It meant the ancient part of Jerusalem, in the east, came under the control of Israel and half a century later Palestinians are still fighting in the courts to keep their homes in east Jerusalem.
The UN says that in the ancient walled part of Jerusalem, which has many sacred sites and which has an area of just under one square kilometre, there are 21 households in danger of being evicted.
In this second report of a two-part series, Sabrina Myre explores their desire to come back to the old city and its consequences.

  • Last day of UK election campaigning and Tories are nervous
In the United Kingdom, today is the last day of campaigning before the country votes in a general election on Thursday for its next government. When Prime Minister Theresa May called an early election, experts predicted that her ruling Conservative party would win comfortably and increase its majority in parliament.
But with campaigning almost over, some opinion polls suggest the Tory lead might be waning even in some of the country's strongest Conservative seats.

  • Security an important campaign issue in UK elections

In a two-part series on the UK elections.

  • Kenya's wildlife helps develop new enzymes for industry
In Kenya the textile, detergent and pharmaceutical industries aren’t as well-known as tourism or tea and coffee exports. But these three industries are being helped by local scientists who are working with the UN and Kenya’s Wildlife Service to develop new enzymes for industry. • Sharing Kenya’s wealth with the custodians of Lake Bogoria
The Endorois people live beside Kenya’s Lake Bogoria, a few hundred kilometres north of the capital Nairobi.
Their traditional way of life means that for generations they have been custodians of Lake Bogoria, which is a soda lake whose water contains lots of salts and has a rich ecosystem.
This means the lake produces microorganisms that can be used in industry.
In 1992, a researcher from a British University harvested these microorganisms from the Lake and later in 1995 sold them to US and Dutch companies that were later sued by the Kenya Wildlife Service for not sharing financial benefits with Kenya.
The case hasn’t been resolved yet. It is against this background that a project seeking to ensure equitable benefit sharing with local communities started in 2014
