Global leader in the power and automation industries. Commercial, residential and utilities. If you own a car the odds are ABB robots helped built it. If you have taken a cruise, the ABB electric propulsion system may drive the cruise ship.
ABB’s Why? – Primarily to find high potential candidates for their leadership pipeline. Also committed to increase diversity and this is a way for they to change the face of the culture and focus on a culture where differences are valued.
Their Co-ops work during Spring, Summer or Fall and they hire 10-15 per session. ABB has about 400 employees in the Cleveland, Office.
Where they find candidates – Sophomore, Junior or senior year in college – Engineering students – Cleveland State, Youngstown State, Ohio State, Case Western Reserve University
What makes an ideal candidate? – Technical proficiency – computer skills, soft skills – communication, collaboration, problem solving, initiative and time management
Interview process – no technical skills testing – assume students in the Engineering program have the aptitude and willingness to be able to learn – use the GPA and coursework to determine ability to learn
Orientation – Tries to have everyone start on the same day – orientation is about 4 hours with lunch. Set expectations, review policies and procedures, safety briefing, tour of the facilities, meet managers and plenty of time for questions. Proposal engineers, systems engineers, software, testing are all some of the roles they have. The roles are matched to the students during the interview process and students come in knowing their role.
Student work is real world work. Projects that need to be completed for the business are completed side by side with the full-time engineers.
How do you evaluate your interns? Formal and informal evaluation and feedback processes. Formal after their first month, in the middle and as an exit interview. May meet more often with the students depending on their role and assignments. Bridgett is always working with the Co-ops in addition to the teams they work in.
What makes the ABB internship Rock? Real world experience – interesting and challenging work. Students are treated like actual employees and conversations are had about the transferable skills they are learning too.
