Laura Evans has spent years away from home pursuing her educational goals. Now she is ready to follow her father to the newly formed town of Cheyenne, Wyoming, to help with the mercantile he has set up. But her father is not the man she thought he was.
Wilson Porter is a preacher whose calling is to the Shoshone Indians. He has encouraged his widowed mother and sister to join him in his ministry. But when they are killed in route to Cheyenne, Will blames himself and is angry with the natives who supposedly killed them and God for allowing this tragedy to occur.
Laura and Will’s paths intersect when she loses control of a wagon and her team runs over Will. Laura and her father do everything possible to provide the best care for him. But over time, Laura begins to see indicators that her father isn’t the upstanding citizen he claims to be and that he may have played a part in Will’s family’s death. As Laura is exposed to the truth, she also sees the difference in Will’s life.
