PHASE OF THE MOON: Last Quarter

SEGMENT: OVER THE MOON

Moon Knight Vol. 5, Issues #14-19 - "God & Country"

Released March - August 2008

Writer - Mike Benson

Penciler - Mark Texeira

Inker - Mark Texeira

Colourist - Dan Brown

Letterer - Joe Caramagna

Editor - Axel Alonso

Moon Knight continues his crusade against crime, wreaking vengeance on criminals with brutal force.

His extreme actions gain the attention of Tony Stark and SHIELD as public perceptions of superheroes are already tenuous at best.

Moon Knight also works with The Profiler to pinpoint particular targets and it it through this that he zeroes in on Simon Maddicks, aka Killer Shrike.

Moon Knights brutal brand of justice gains the ire of Frenchie but also piques the interest of one Carson Knowles. Knowles is finding it hard to adjust to society after serving a sentence and he's subjected to his own problems in the form of his parole officer.

Knowles' mental instability pushes him to return as Black Spectre.

Meanwhile Marc is suffering from his own inner demons and his relationship with Marlene fares no better.

She storms out and runs into Knowles who has similarly lost his way. Knowles decides to frame Moon Knight for crimes and Killer Shrike is soon murdered, left with a crescent moon carved on his head by Knowles.

Iron man soon catches up with Moon Knight but he tells Tony he's being framed.

Meanwhile elsewhere, Knowles the Black Spectre, picks up some Nanotech in his plan to control the city.

Black Spectre attacks Moon Knight and leaves him for dead.

Though he's pushed away many of his friends, Marc's close network like Ray and Crawley help him out to continue his fight and thirst for vengeance.

Moon Knight catches up with Black Spectre who is intent to release a controlling agent onto the populace and in a deadly rooftop fight, Moon Knight desparately decides to push Black Spectre over the edge, killing him.

SHIELD close in on Marc, wanting to bring him in,whilst Marc tells Khonshu enough is enough.

EPISODE 174:

High Priest of Khonshu Rey is joined by co-host Matt 'Clippers' Kona for a very different comic that involves Moon Knight...but only tangentially!

PHASE OF THE MOON: Waxing Gibbous

SEGMENT:OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON

Avengers Annual Vol. 4, Issue #1 - "1st Story"

Published March 2012

Writer - Brian Michael Bendis

Penciler - Gabriele Dell'Otto

Inker - Gabriele Dell'Otto

Colourist - Ive Svorcina

Letterer - Cory Petit

Editor - Tom Brevoort

Mere seconds after Simon Williams and his Revengers devastate the New Avengers, Commander Steve Rogers receives a video feed of the attack. When he recognizes Williams, he quietly puts out an all-Avengers alert.

Arriving in a Quinjet, the gathered Avengers are shocked at the sight of their teammates brought low. As the injured heroes struggle to dig themselves out, they tell Rogers, Thor, and Iron Man that Simon Williams attacked them with every intention of beating them into the ground. Iron Man and Thor admit he'd made threats before but they had never believed he would go through with it. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones find Danielle unharmed in her nanny's arms, though Squirrel Girl needs assurance that she did the right thing by staying out of the fight. Then Jessica looks up to see Atlas wrecking Avengers Tower.

The Avengers, Secret Avengers, and those New Avengers who are able to fight rush to the scene, but they find the damage minimal and the building empty. Atlas' attack was merely a decoy to give Williams time to call a press conference. When the Avengers arrive, they find him holding forth on the steps of the New York Public Library, telling a large crowd that the Avengers have been operating in secret for too long and must be held to account. He threatens to make all their crimes public unless they disband. The Avengers order him to stand down, but he is defiant: "I don't acknowledge your authority over me! ... You'll kill me to cover up the truth! You'll let these people burn to protect our secrets."

Iron Man tries to talk Williams down, but when that fails he releases a sphere from a hidden compartment in his armor, trapping Williams' ionic form within. The rest of the Revengers are given the option to surrender; Atlas refuses, gambling that the Avengers won't dare to attack with so many civilians around. They are right: the Avengers teleported them to an empty Citi Field instead, where the combined forces of all three teams make short work of their opponents.

In custody, the Revengers share their grievances. Their reasons vary from vengeance (Goliath, Ethan Edwards) to wounded pride (Captain Ultra, Devil-Slayer, Atlas) to a simple conviction that Williams is in the right and the Avengers are in the wrong (Anti-Venom).

Beast, who has seemed the most hurt and mystified by Williams' behavior, goes to interview him while Rogers, Iron Man, and Thor watch by video feed. Williams insists that he is acting of his own free will and remains steadfast in his claim that the Avengers must disband before more people are hurt. He also adds something new: his realization that Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, created him; that he probably isn't even real. Appealing to their friendship, Williams tries to extract a promise from Beast to shut the Avengers down when he realizes that Williams is in the right, but a distressed Beast walks away.

Various news programs and talking heads are buzzing about the Avengers' lack of transparency and stonewalling tactics. Some openly speculate that the time for a self-appointed hero team is over and done.

In his bubble, Simon Williams smiles and vanishes into a white light.

Does this issue have enough there without Moon Knight to make it interesting? Will the co-hosts enjoy a Khonshu-less tale? You'll have to dive in to hear all about it!

EPISODE 172:

High Priest of Khonshu Rey welcomes first time co-host and valued Patroony, Executive Producer Justin 'The Owl' Osgood to the show to shoot the breeze and review another classic issue from the Moench-Sienkiewicz era -

PHASE OF THE MOON: Waning Crescent

SEGMENT: LUNAR-PICK CLASSIC RUN REVIEW

Moon Knight Vol. 1, Issue #17 - "Master Sniper's Legacy / The Worship of False Idols"

Published March 1982

MASTER SNIPER'S LEGACY

Moon Knight is recruited by his old friend Benjamin Abramov of the Israeli Secret Service to help against the 3rd World Slayers, but when Abramov is assasinated right in front of Steven's eyes, he first has to deal with the Slayers' agent, the Master Sniper.

THE WORSHIP OF FALSE IDOLS

In his mercenary days, Marc Spector steals what he believes is a priceless Incan gold statuette and then encounters a string of bad luck he can only attribute to the artifact's curse, but when he finally gets back to camp, it turns out what he grabbed was a plaster souvenir.

Justin: 🌖 6.5/10 total - Getting Smol Moon

Rey: 🌖 6.5/10 - Waning Gibbous

There's plenty to chew on in both stories and Justin and Rey make full use of their knowledge of comics overall to cite references, errors as well as talk about other books that they like!

Don't miss out on Justin's maiden episode!!

Shine those idols, and dust off the cape....IT'S TIME TO GET YOUR KHONSHU ON!
