A reader named Alex wrote a long, seemingly courteous letter to me — more careful and more genuinely wrestling with Scripture than most criticism I receive, but making serious charges all the same: that my teaching is doctrinally vague, that it amounts to extreme separatism, and that it risks pushing isolated believers into a dangerous, unaccountable "lone wolf" Christianity with no fellowship at all.

In this episode, I explain why I'm not going to answer him privately, point by point, in his inbox — and instead lay out the fuller answer here, for him and for everyone raising the same questions.

Along the way: what Jeremiah 24's "Two Baskets of Figs" actually says about who the real exiles were; the Abedi Inversion from The Glorious Few and why systemic diagnosis isn't the same as anecdote; a direct answer to the lone-wolf concern and what real, biblical exile does and doesn't look like; and a closer look at Samuel Rutherford's warning against Brownist separatism — including why his own life as a Covenanter who wrote Lex, Rex makes him an odd witness to conscript for "never leave."

In this deep-dive follow-up to this video, Nick and Mairi unpack the stark, sobering reality that occurs when the structural machinery of modern churches collides with the true Word of the LORD. If you have ever felt a profound, unsettling disconnect between the casual peace of the church platform and the heavy burden in your own soul for genuine faithfulness, this conversation is for you.

We break down three critical dimensions of this spiritual landscape:

• The Polar Opposite Clash: Why is there a recurring collision between institutional church leaders and those who steward a prophetic word? We expose the stark contrast between pastors who are jealously consumed with defending their own local kingdoms using the vocabulary of Christ, versus a heart that is completely broken by His cross and undone by His glory.
• Defining the True Prophetic Word: Scripturally, the spirit of prophecy is not a tool for fortune-telling or religious entertainment, it is the direct testimony of Jesus. It is a deep, agonising empathy with the suffering heart of God the Father over a backslidden people. Because it pierces systemic idolatry, it is historically met with a fierce, demonic resistance that seeks to see it missed, rejected, and murdered.
• What is Required of His People: For the harassed, helpless, and scattered sheep who have ears to hear, the instruction is clear. We look at the absolute necessity of stepping out from under blind institutional allegiance, running from shepherds who merely feed themselves, and intentionally seeking out contexts where the ultimate focus is a jealous regard for the glory of Yahweh.

Urgent action is required!

The brokenness of the carnal recruitment processes of the world is reflected in the recruitment processes (and adverts) of the Church.

What do we include in our person specification for a church leader?

We include at least these 14 points in our personal specification for a church leader:

1. A man who is able to describe personal cost associated with their stand for the Gospel;

2. A man who is able to describe personal repentance and specific examples
of their change of mind recently;

3. A man who is able to describe relationships as well as estrangements;

4. A man who is able to describe their urgent burden for the lost;

5. A man who is NOT popular with everyone;

6. A man who even has enemies;

7. A man who has been ostracised;

8. A man whose stand for doctrinal clarity has been personally costly;

9. A man who can describe turning down an opportunity to alleviate pain,
ultimately declining out of conviction;

10. A man who is calling the Church to repentance as a Body and not only
individual members;

11. A man who is willing to relocate, to be disrupted, including family/children/job;

12.  A man whose testimony is radically different post-2020 cf. pre-2020;

13. A man who sings/praises God every day;

14. A man who weeps for the state the Church and the glory of His Name.
