Bathsheba is known as "Uriah's wife," and yet becomes part of the lineage of the King through the lust, deceit, scheming, and cover-up of King David. This dark chapter in the life of the famous and celebrated warrior-king multiplies her trauma, grieves her to utter sadness through death of her heroic husband, then the death of the illegitimate child born from David's adultery, and the conflicted existence as mother of Solomon the chosen heir to the throne. Disgrace and shame spreads and yet Grace wins in the end.

Ruth has become a widow along with her mother-in-law, Naomi. They forge ahead into the unknown as deepest kind of friends. Naomi's candor and affection makes plain God's care, and Ruth's courageous love and covenant-making demonstrates her faith in the true and living God.

We continue with Rahab, a former prostitute and inn-keeper at the military base of Jericho, who through faith became a daughter of God, part of His covenant people, and a mother in the lineage of King David and Jesus the Messiah.

11/18/18. Ephesians 4:7-16. The ministry of Jesus, in fullness and completion, is given to and shared with His church, to bring Christ's fullness to the whole world.

Jesus is the Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Shepherd, and Teacher, and shares His roles as gifts to called leaders in the church, to serve all people, growing us into wholeness and maturing.

We are learning to love one another for Jesus' sake, and all the ways we can become eager to keep and maintain this unity. How will our care for one another influence those around us and have an impact on the world at large?

11/4/18. Ephesians 3:14-21. Prayer expresses desire. One clear way to discover a Christian’s primary anxieties and ambitions is to listen to the content of his or her prayers, and notice the intensity with which he or she prays them. The great Apostle Paul gets down on his knees and prays for these new believers, and us. We will do well to join him (on our knees), and receive this prayer, echoing it for the sake of others as well.
