  • Reaching Out to Experts For Help
Product licensing expert Stephen Key brings back Laura Hunter, the entrepreneur who invented and commercialized a huge hit in the beauty industry called the Lash Liner System, an improved way of applying false lashes using magnetic eyeliner.
Stephen asks Laura, what's the right way for someone to contact you with a question? What kinds of questions or style is most likely to prompt a response from you? Stephen wants to know what the right way to ask an expert, in this case a successful entrepreneur, for help and/or advice. Per usual, Laura gives direct, helpful advice.
    https://www.lashliner.com/
    1. Do your homework. Look first! And then, if you can't find an answer to your question after really trying, reach out. "I have looked everywhere, and I cannot figure out what this thing is...."
    2. Be succinct. Be quick. Unsolicited offers should be brief. Laura likes to look at innovative products! But if you send her a book, she'll never read it. Do you click on links? Not a great start!
    3. Be respectful. This should go without saying, but it's important.

  • Patents Don't Protect People From Stealing Your Inventions
Take a deep dive with Stephen Key: https://www.inventright.com/deepdive
What do patents do? How do they stop people from stealing your invention? That's what patents do, right — you need a patent to protect your invention, right? No, not really. It's a little more complicated than that. Patents can have value, but it has nothing to do with stopping anyone.
Speaking from personal experience with the patent system, licensing expert and IP strategist Stephen Key explains why patents don't stop or protect people from stealing your invention. It's the truth! Stephen explains how he got worked around by talented engineers, which is fair game. Watching patent attorneys argue about words taught Steve that ownership was more of a slippery slope, because the meaning of words are interpreted differently by different people at different times.
Stephen also gets into why prior art, which includes patents and publications, is a complicating factor as well. He also describes the powerful nature of innovation, which is that it never stops! He also touches on workarounds, variations, the danger of crowdfunding, and copycats. These are all realities and obstacles of the modern entrepreneur! Learn what you actually need to establish and maintain ownership of your ideas.
Then Stephen offers his best tips for protecting your ideas that do not include patents.

  • How Lauren Brought Her Baby Massager to Market
What do you do after you come up with an idea for a new product? What do you do first? How do you get a prototype made? In this video, inventRight cofounder Stephen Key interviews entrepreneur Lauren Piccirillo, the inventor of the Tranquilo Baby Soothe Baby Massager, which she licensed to The Betesh Group. Lauren worked extremely hard and for a long time to make her unique and novel idea a reality in the marketplace. Congratulations Lauren! You did it!
Lauren and Stephen discuss how she licensed her Baby Soothe Baby Massager onto the market, including how she prototyped it and how she connected with her licensee, the Betesh Group, over LinkedIn. She says "LinkedIn is fantastic as far as connecting with people instantly." She also used Facebook.
Lauren refused to give up and always believed very strongly in the benefit of her idea. Her persistence was critical to her success! She admits that she was a bit naive in the beginning in that she thought it would only take a couple of years, when in reality it's been closer to a decade. Her product has been sold in Walmarts and has gotten attention from other major retailers.
Lauren is also a serious pro at getting press and media attention for her hard efforts.

  • How is the Coronavirus Impacting Open Innovation?
How has the coronavirus impacted open innovation? Are companies still looking for ideas? Are they still open to hearing from inventors about their new ideas for products? Can you submit to them? Should you? Licensing expert Stephen Key shares what he's learned from open innovation companies and describes where the opportunities are. Mostly, the news is good — but there are also some things you should be aware of.
Stephen explains that every company he has interviewed is still looking for ideas, but some companies have been more affected by disruptions at retail and trade shows than others. For example, smaller companies and companies not active on e-commerce platforms have felt the affects more greatly. For some industries, like home improvement and toys, this has actually been a booming time for business.
