  • Selling Promotional Products
If you have an idea for a product that would be perfect as a promotional product, how do you get it to market? Promotional products are typically products that people can put their brand on and giveaway for marketing purposes. Kevin Stoops invented a better bottle clip, which he manufacturers himself in the USA and is now selling as a promotional product. This is such a simple idea, but it requires a visual demonstration! So, how does that work as a promotional product? Right now he's narrowing down what to name his product.
    http://www.krscorporation.com/
Kevin is a successful entrepreneur who sells products to restaurants and other places for kitchen operations. He is in Applebee’s, Arby’s, CKE (Hardee’s and Carl Jr’s) Tropical Smoothies, QuikTrip Kitchens, Regal Cinemas, AMC Theaters, and many more locations. He has been on QVC with one of his inventions and attended multiple trade shows with a booth demonstrating and selling products.
He does both Business to Business and Business to Consumer products. He is in retail across the country with his bottle clips and now going into catalogs. Since he began inventing products in 2004, he has 20 patents of various things and his sales are $1M+ per year!
This is with no venture capital — his projects are all self-funded and he has been in the black since Day 1. Impressive job Kevin! Well-done!

  • How Tim Invented Vivobarefoot Shoes
Tim Brennan is the inventor of Vivobarefoot shoes, the minimalist footwear that took the world by storm when it hit the market in the 2000s. Today barefoot style shoes are mainstream, but back when Tim designed and patented the very first version, it was a totally novel concept and very different from what shoe makers assumed was the most supportive kind of shoe. Barefoot shoes have a very loyal following all around the world today, almost two decades after Tim originally came up with this style of shoe. That's wild!
Licensing expert and inventor Stephen Key interviews Tim, a longtime inventRight student, about his history of inventing and designing. Tim invented the barefoot style of shoe to help him get over his foot pain. Sometimes, when an inventor solves a problem they experience, they tap into a problem experienced by people all over the world. Pretty much everyone wears shoes! So the market potential was always huge. Tim was only 17 years old when he came up with the idea of Vivobarefoot shoes, which is especially incredible.

Tim explains why he decided to sign up and become an inventRight student even though he had already licensed a popular product to a big company. He wanted to learn more, really enjoy the process, and become a master at licensing. His design degrees didn't even address licensing! He had to let go of the details of design, and focus on showing more ideas more quickly, with good marketing material. Which is difficult to do if you've studied design, and taught to focus on the details!
If you're a designer, you need to learn how to think like a marketer.

  • The Best Advice You'll Hear From a Patent Attorney
What is a patent? Should you get a patent? When an inventor wants to patent an invention, they typically hire a patent attorney to help them prepare and file the application. After the application is filed with the Patent and Trademark Office, a patent examiner has questions for the inventor and their patent attorney about whether they really deserve the patent. It can be difficult to get a patent issued if you can't overcome the issues that the patent examiner has. This happened to Australia inventor Connie Gerace, who created and licensed a better pool broom. Her original patent attorney told her, "I can't help you. This is a useless case." She refused to give up, and found a patent attorney named Anthony Alder who could help her.
Anthony explains that while Connie's patent application drawings were fantastic, her first patent attorney did a poor job capturing all of the invention's unique features, in particular the key features of her invention. Anthony says that his role as a patent attorney is to take an inventor's solution, and spell that out into unique features.
Anthony explains that Connie's licensor, Waterco, really wanted a granted patent to seal the licensing deal. So, it was really important that Connie's patent application was approved, and quickly. This is at odds with Anthony's typical advice to inventors, which is to go slow. We agree!
So, what's important when you're working with a patent attorney? Anthony explains any patent attorney can write a summary of an invention. What's more important is creating a story. The background is where you tell the examiner why your invention is better! Everyone loves a story. And that's what separates okay patent attorneys from good ones.
Get in touch with Anthony: www.alderip.com.au
Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Anthony about how to tell if you have an inventor-friendly patent attorney, the importance of feeling like your patent attorney is on your side, the habits and practices of bad patent attorneys, and much more.
Do your homework! There is no substitute for hard work. As it turns out, Anthony is a fan of "One Simple Idea"!
    You rock Anthony. Thank you!

  • How Tim Licensed a Safer Mandoline
The best way of upping your odds of inventing success is befriending companies that are looking for ideas. That's how professional inventor Tim Brennan was inspired to invent a safer mandoline, the kitchen tool that is used to cut very thin, even slices of vegetables. At the housewares trade show in Chicago, the beloved company Joseph Joseph told Tim that's what they needed — it was an industry-wide problem. Was he up for the challenge? Yes! Tim set out to invent and design a better, safer mandoline.
Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Tim about his invention success story. The design question Tim needed to solve was, "How do you hold directly the stuff that you're chopping without risking your fingers?" He knew consumers wanted to feel like they were holding the vegetable in need of slicing.

It's important to establish relationships like a professional, which includes going to trade shows! Tim is from the UK and lives in London. Tim shares a prototype of his design.

  • Using Product Seeding to Get Publicity
Do you want to create more revenue from your product idea? A great public relations campaign can have a long-lasting impact on your brand’s reputation and public image. It will also help you sell more product. So, whether you’re licensing or venturing, learning how to get media attention is something every inventor should do.
There are many different ways of getting publicity for your product. One of the most effective is by going the distance to literally place it into the hands of media and influencers. This strategy is sometimes referred to as “product seeding,” and it works.
This strategy isn’t new, but it’s particularly effective right now because we’re all so inundated with digital content. Whereas nothing compares to actually holding something in your hand, where you can touch, feel, see, and use it…. which is more likely to pique someone’s curiosity and motivate them to contact you for more information!
Michael Sturba and Rachel Duguay are the husband and wife creators of MicroPuzzles, 150-piece mini puzzles that can be completed in one setting and come packed in test tubes. They 3D print and package the puzzles from their one-bedroom apartment in Anaheim, California, which is seriously impressive, because they look as professional as you would find anywhere.
    https://micropuzzles.com/
At a Shopify event in Los Angeles last year, they learned about how product seeding could help them grow their business. So, between Christmas and New Year's, they mailed out puzzles with thank you notes to some of their favorite mentors, content creators, and fellow entrepreneurs.
“Sometimes it gets really lonely when you're doing product development,” Sturba explained. “This was a way of saying, ‘We appreciate the content you provide, the enthusiasm, or even just the support.’”
They also mailed a puzzle to KTLA, their favorite morning television news show in Los Angeles, with a note expressing their appreciation of the station’s coverage. Three days later, a producer emailed them and the very next morning, they were featured on the show!
Their segment resulted in an eightfold increase in sales, unprecedented website traffic, and an inquiry from a Shark Tank producer.
Congratulations Michael and Rachel! Watch licensing expert Stephen Key interview these entrepreneurs about how they got media attention for their product, MicroPuzzles.
