Jason Klug is the CEO and founder of Klugonyx Group, LLC, a full-service product development and manufacturing sourcing firm. His background is in mechanical engineering and sales; over the course of his career, he's helped bring hundreds of new products to market. Categories of product the Klugonyx Group has worked on include baby and toy, kitchen, outdoor and sports, home, pet, and consumer electronics. He started his company doing engineering work for clients, pulling in industrial designers when needed. Eventually, over time, he slowly brought on more and more team members. Today he has engineers, industrial designers, and project managers. They help shape initial ideas from sketches, then 3D modeling work, problem solving, and more prototyping.

In this interview, inventRight cofounder Stephen Key asks Jason about how he works with independent inventors and companies to prototype their ideas to life. Jason's partner Nate will then get factory quotes and start readying for production, like identifying manufacturers, all the way through to quality control.

Jason says, "We can do it." Stephen and Jason discuss the design process, including taking clients through the idea and asking, is this as well-thought out as it could be? Is there more to it? Are there too many features? These are hugely important questions that needed to be answered!

They also discuss intellectual property, how Jason's firm helps save inventors time and money, pricing, production, overseas manufacturing, and more.

Eitan Kramer is an entrepreneur, actor, inventor, former professional inline skater, trainer, and Guinness World Record holder. He is the creator of the MorfBoard system, which was invented to bring action sports to everyone in a way that is accessible, simple, affordable, and fun — in a totally new and innovative way. Product licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Eitan about his experience becoming an entrepreneur and bringing the MorfBoard to market, including a Kickstarter campaign and a licensing deal.

The MorfBoard is a skateboard that not only converts into a scooter, but is also a balance board and even a bounce board for catching big air. Meaning children can test out four different kinds of movement, to see which they might like best, before committing to just one.

Today the MorfBoard is sold by toy company Jakks Pacific.

Eitan left action sports for the fitness world, where he discovered that people who were getting fit weren't loving it the way he knew other movers did. So, how could he bring his love of action sports down to a micro level so more people could experience it? You can bounce on it, balance on it, roll out on it — all movements that are functional and fun. If you can be developing skill while moving, he realized, the play element would be brought back into movement.

After raising $300,000 from friends and family, he did a Kickstarter campaign, but it failed, and he was devastated. He did everything we say you don't quite need to do at first, like paying for prototypes and patents. When he wasn't successful, his community hoped he would move on. But Eitan wasn't done. He realized his invention was a better product for kids instead of adults. With the MorfBoard, kids can experience a lot of really fun movement patterns without spending a lot of money on gear.

Stephen asked Eitan about why he decided to go the licensing route instead, and how he landed on licensee Jakks Pacific. They also discuss the nuances of his deal, like Eitan's level of involvement historically and today. Eitan has been extremely involved with his licensee, which he describes as fantastic and offering tons of support.

Eitan discusses the many new products he's working on, a couple of which are close to a deal. No surprise here: He loves outdoor active play products!

He explains how he is essentially doing project management, trying to push all of his projects forward. His advice for inventors is patience, perseverance, and play. Even when everything is on your side of the court, like ideation and design, it's still going to take a ton of time! He's been rejected so many times. And if you aren't playful with your inventing projects, it's going to be a lot harder to be creative.

Ultimately, he describes his motivation for inventing the MorfBoard.

Siddarth Gupta is the inventor of the Drill Duster, a simple mechanical accessory that can be attached to any hand-held drilling machine to collect dust at the very source without the need of any additional motors or batteries. It protects your lungs by keeping the work environment dust-free during and after drilling, can collect and store dust for up to 20 holes, weighs less than 100 grams, and avoids all the mess so that no post-drilling clean up is required, ever!

Sid explains the origin of his invention, which is patented in India and on the market now.

"One of my early days after coming back to India from Germany having completed my masters, I was drilling a hole on the ceiling of my room to hang my bicycle that was rusting in the backyard and came across a pain.

During the process of drilling, quite a significant amount of dust was generated and some of it fell on my right eye, even though I was wearing eye protection. I had an eye infection for about a week and really thought to myself: Why was there no solution to collect dust for the most used power tool, the drilling machine? I went to the web and found some solutions, however, most of these solutions required an external vacuum cleaner to collect the dust and others were just below par designs when it came to capturing the lighter air borne dust (that caused my eye infection).

So, he designed a better solution that utilizes the already available forces and motion during drilling to extract the drill dust. This is a very clever design. Congratulations Sid!

How do you know who to trust? Especially when you fly to China to meet with manufacturers?

This is Part 3 of Stephen's interview series of Jack and Mike, the entrepreneurs who brought Bed Scrunchie to market. Bed Scrunchie prevents your bed sheets from getting loose. The topic is manufacturing. Jack and Mike describe what they did to get started and how you begin to trust anyone. A lot of decisions are made on intuition. How do you know when someone is trying to game you? Jack explains that you're going to feel it! You can't know good until you've seen good and vice-versa. The moral? You need to dive in and try. He bought a one-way ticket to China and told himself he wouldn't come back until he knew what he was doing. A good factory will send a car for you! How do you know if you are dealing with an owner, an associate, or a trading company?

Jack and Mike describe their technique for making sure their idea for Bed Scrunchie was protected when they began working with overseas manufacturers. What tells you you've got the right guy? Testimonials? Referrals? They assessed who was actually helpful and put effort forth into helping them achieve their goals. You can't fake effort!

Howie Busch is the creator of DudeRobe, a nationally-known loungewear set for men beloved by professional athletes and featured in an episode of ABC's Shark Tank. Howie is an attorney in addition to be an inventor and a former coach for inventRight. He is active within the inventor community, known for sharing his hard-won insights with the USPTO and to inventor groups.

Stephen asks Howie how busy he is with DudeRobe and how demanding is the job of an entrepreneur. Howie says, "You better love it." He is continuously having one problem to solve after another, whether it's with samples or manufacturing or bad reviews on Amazon. Howie does his manufacturing in Pakistan. He is working on version 2.0 now. They discuss the benefits of working with different manufacturers, how Howie found his manufacturer, and how that intersected with his Kickstarter campaign. He says that manufacturing and fulfillment are two of the biggest issues entrepreneurs face with venturing. Howie currently has his product at his house because he's switching fulfillment centers!

They define what fulfillment is. They discuss other problems and opportunities in selling online, like reviews and copycats. Bad reviews really hurt! They also talk about money. Can you do this on a shoestring? It depends on the product. The Internet has made testing much easier. No one wanting to make his invention has been part of his protection strategy!
