  • Become a Professional Inventor and Travel the World
Reporting live from vacation with his wife Janice in Fes, Morocco, lifelong entrepreneur Stephen Key describes the best way inventors can protect themselves when licensing their ideas. For decades, Stephen licensed his ideas for products and used the passive income he earned to travel the world with his family. He once spent six months driving around the United States with Janice and their three children so they could visit beautiful national parks and explore the nation. When you choose the licensing route instead of the venturing route, you can make travel — and living anywhere you want to in the world — part of your plan.

  • Mike Bowling's Pound Puppies Made $1 Billion at Retail
    https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-bowling-a52b66128/
Mike Bowling is the inventor of Pound Puppies, an extremely popular line of toys that debuted in the 1980s and inspired an animated TV special, two animated TV series, and a feature film. "One Simple Idea" author Stephen Key interviews Bowling about how he invented and licensed Pound Puppies. Stephen is very familiar with Pound Puppies, because they were a huge hit when he was entering the toy and game industry and Stephen himself was a plush creator. (Meaning, he worked with fabrics and other soft materials to sculpt designs.)
Mike was inspired to invent Pound Puppies based on his experience as a child adopting a dog from the pound. People love their kids and their pets, Mike rationalized. With Pound Puppies, children could go the pound, pick out the pet that they wanted, bring it home, and name it — all of which created a sense of ownership of having a pet. This feeling was very unique in the marketplace at the time. Pound Puppies were unique because they didn't have a name!
Tonka, the company that began selling Pound Puppies, even included the option of mailing them the name you had chosen, and they would return a little tag. Genius. With Pound Puppies, nearly 30-40% of consumers took advantage of this option. Incredible! It says how important it was to that child to name and own the puppy.
Mike also packaged the toy so that it looked like you were taking your pet home from the pound, which Stephen describes as brilliant. Mike designed the packaging himself with a posterboard and an X-Acto knife. You peaked through the bars to see the puppy inside. Tonka's marketing people wanted the puppy's head to be seen by the children. Irwin Toy came out with Pound Puppies first in 1984, and they took it from Mike on the spot. It became the #1 new toy in Canada that year.
Mike says, "You keep going from the no's until you get a yes." Ultimately, Mike was rejected 14 times. Mike describes the rejections he receives and the reasons he was given. Pound Puppies became the number #1 toy in the WORLD. Mike was a factory worker at Ford at the time, which he didn't really enjoy, but it supported his family. When he got the idea, he thought, "This is it." He was convinced this was his opportunity to get out of the factory and do something he enjoyed every day: The creative process. He didn't allow any rejection to get in his way.
Mike quit to follow his dream. There was no option but to succeed. He had never been in the toy industry. He believed that he could figure it out, and he did.
Mike describes his journey of commercializing Pound Puppies, including how he sold early puppies, getting into companies, the importance of networking, how a story in the local paper helped him, reaching out to an IP attorney first, how he positioned his initial pitch, how he approaches his business relationships, and more. It's not just luck. You have to chase down leads and take action to make your idea a reality.
Since Pound Puppies, he has licensed 25-30 more ideas. He's still in the game coming up with ideas.
Mike explains that his biggest success is getting to do what he wants to every day, and he has loved every minute of it. Congratulations Mike! You're a true inspiration.

  • You Know You've Hit It When You Get a WOW!
    http://www.LloydMarketingGroup.com
Lisa Lloyd is a highly successful entrepreneur, inventor, and patent holder who has licensed each of her seven patents. Her products can be found in stores globally licensed by brands like Scunci®, Vidal Sassoon®, Goody® and Suave®.
She also has a long history of helping inventors bring their products to market. After the success of her first licensed product, a hair accessory called the French Twister, Lisa cofounded the Inventors Association of Arizona with her mother, which is still thriving today! Due to her organization's success, she was invited to share her secrets with the United Inventors Association and also became its president.
Stephen interviews Lisa about her experience licensing her ideas for products, including how easy it was to get into companies looking for ideas. Lisa explains how she got in touch with companies looking for ideas (this was before the Internet) and that these companies treated her well.
Over the years, Lisa has been very successful at getting national media attention for her products, including getting on Dr. Phil, the Big Idea with Donny Deutsch show, and the first season of ABC's Shark Tank, where she received three offers.
Stephen has known Lisa for 25 years and brought her on inventRightTV to discuss how to invent. Even professional inventors struggle to answer this question! What's the process? How do you do it? Lisa has been researching the best practices of innovation and inventing, learning as much as she can about how leading innovators innovate and ideate.
She's taken what she's learned from Fortune 500 companies and brought it to the level of the independent inventor, so they can use the same principles. Lisa explains that the reason why companies are not licensing more products is because the ideas they receive are not solutions to problems that will sell. If your solution is not dramatically better enough, it won't net profit for the company. That's the only way to get consumers to switch to something new. You know you've hit it when you get a "Wow!"

  • Should You Make Two LinkedIn Accounts?
SmartPitch creator Benjamin Harrison is back on for another discussion about how inventors can make the best use of LinkedIn with licensing experts Andrew Krauss and Stephen Key. Benjamin explains that one of the most common questions he gets asked by product developers and inventors is whether they should make two LinkedIn profiles.
Today, people are not expected to work just one job or spend their entire career in the same industry. We're all multi-faceted people! Anyone, in any industry, can be creative and come up with ideas for new products. Benjamin explains that including the fact that you also develop products on the side on your profile shouldn't be a major concern — plus, creating two profiles is explicitly against LinkedIn's policy.
Andrew, Stephen, and Benjamin explore this topic and conclude that honesty is always the best possible. If you're concerned that your employer won't like you including that you are also an inventor on your profile, you should discuss it — not secretively create a second profile. Your fears might be overblown.
No one has enough time to lead a dual digital life. Commit to growing one profile and your network on LinkedIn. In fact, your creativity will likely be perceived as an asset.

  • Laura's Lash Liner System Made $25 Million Revenue in a Year
    https://www.lashliner.com/
Laura Hunter is the inventor and entrepreneur of the Lash Liner System, a smash hit in the beauty industry, and the world's first patent pending magnetic eyeliner. If you have struggled to attach false eyelashes, struggle no more! The magnetic bond between Laura's eyeliner and false lashes actually gets stronger throughout the day. The Lash Liner System is reusable up to 30 times and the liner lasts a year, giving you anywhere from 30 to 100 uses depending on how often you use it.
Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Laura, a former photographer of 25 years who also frequently styled her client's hair and makeup, to learn more about her journey to market. She explains how she tested her initial hypothesis using products she bought from the drugstore. How many prototypes did she make? Hundreds! Laura says, "Do not stop! Do not give up."
Laura explains her aha moment of inspiration at Sally's Beauty Supply: "I was so excited to try on the new magnetic lashes. I really wanted to love them. I was so eager to try them that I sat in my car, outside the store and tried them on. They were awful. They slid down, they stuck out on the corners, they jumped around when I tried to connect them and they were so bulky that I could clearly see them in my field of view.
I was extremely disappointed. It suddenly struck me that false eyelashes that were attached to magnetic eyeliner would be so much better. But there was no such thing as magnetic eyeliner. I realized that I could probably invent it myself! I immediately went home, started researching and bought everything I thought I needed. After a lot of trial and error and working with different materials and magnets I came up with an amazing and strong product that I'm in love with. I hope you love it as much as I do!"
Laura has received lots of awesome press for her invention, including mentions in Good Morning America, Elle, ABC News, Buzzfeed, and more.
Stephen and Laura discuss how she struggled to find the right manufacturer, the nuances of the cosmetic industry, her Kickstarter campaign, the speed of copycats and how she deals with them today, how PayPal and Shopify helped her with cash flow for about a six month period when she needed it, and more. Having $100,000 in orders and no product?! Stressful. But Laura flew to China to make it happen.

An excellent way of establishing your ownership of your invention is by letting the world know you are the inventor! Media attention can really help. In this video, licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Andrea about public relations, including the difference between editorial coverage and paid-for sponsorships, why you shouldn't focus on getting on The Ellen Show, the value of local media outlets, and why being sales-oriented is a big mistake. Instead, you need to focus on how you can tie your product into a larger theme and deliver to that media outlet's audience. The message is everything!
Madeleine Key, Stephen's daughter and longtime writing partner, joins the interview to discuss how she works with Stephen to write articles about inventors for the online platforms of Inc., Forbes, and Entrepreneur magazines.
Andrea also explains how she works with inventors and what she needs from inventors to help them get press for their inventions. She pulls back the curtain on public relations, offering priceless insights along the way. Should you pay for press? Andrea says, "Sometimes."

  • Steve Raised $1 Million to Reinvent the Faucet
    https://nasoni.com/
Steve Waddell invented a faucet that makes it much easier to drink from, aka the world's first fountain faucet. All you have to do is rotate the lever to drink from your sink. As Steve puts it, it's a fountain combined with a faucet. You will save water without even trying! He has spent the past five years bringing it to market including raising nearly $1 million dollars. You can also dip your face into the gentle stream to wash your face of cleanser or shaving cream. It's also a perfect at-home eye washing station.
Every time he brushed his teeth he found his mouth filled with toothpaste and wondered, what's the best way to rinse?
"Tilt your head under the faucet?" he asks. "Cup your hand? Have a glass beside the sink that gets dirty? Or even brush your teeth in the shower?"
The Nasoni Dual-Purpose Faucet is a gadget that combines the attributes of a fountain and a faucet. The water flows down through the nozzle when you wash your hands, but simply turn a small lever and the water streams out of a hole at the top, letting you take a sip to rinse.
Nasoni means big nose in Italian. Steve was inspired by the water system he saw when he visited Rome, Italy and wondered why no one had brought the fountain faucet combination into American homes.
Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Steve about how he ventured this product onto the market. They discuss the many impressive awards and money he has won, including $50,000 on the Steve Harvey show! Wow. They discuss the money Steve has raised, getting proof of concept, and more. Steve just ran a small Kickstarter campaign that got a lot of publicity and now has sales reps working for him trying to get this into retailers.
Before he started venturing the Nasoni Faucet onto the market, he spent 25 years building aircraft carriers and submarines. Eventually, he joined a technology consultancy, Reed Integration, which was started by his wife and ranked 997th on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest growing companies. Steve also offers his best advice for getting started venturing your product into the market.
Steve, congratulations on reinventing the faucet! Thank you for coming on inventRightTV!

  • Following Up With Companies: What You Need to Know
Licensing expert and inventRight cofounder Andrew Krauss interviews inventRight coach Brayton Bushby about following up with the open innovation companies you submit your product ideas to. Brayton is a talented product developer who has successfully licensed his own ideas for products. Once an inventRight student and now an inventRight coach, he shares his insights about having appropriate expectations, the importance of understanding that companies move much slower than inventors, acting like a professional and not a pest, the crucial importance of following up, and much more. When you push people too hard, they will want to avoid you! You may have a favorite company, but you don't know what's going on at that company, so please — don't put your eggs all in one basket. And make sure to take good notes!
What gets measured gets managed. If you don't keep track of what you're doing, it's difficult to improve. The numbers don't lie! Following up with the product ideas you submit can be taxing and not that fun, but it is so important. If you want to see your product out there, you've got to do it.
If you have a great product but you make no effort, your product won't make it to market. It's as simple as that.
