Warren Wilson is the inventor of BetterBlocks, the first building block toy for children to really challenge Lego in the marketplace. With BetterBlocks you can build models which bend, shape curve and move! With regular blocks (LEGO) you can only build models which are ridged; they don’t bend or move. BetterBlocks ended up being a $45-million-dollar idea. In its prime, Warren is proud to admit, it gave LEGO a bit of a headache. BetterBlocks is no longer on the market today. However, Warren recently joined the inventRight Bootcamp Coaching program to learn our 10-step system of licensing product idea and is considering licensing BetterBlocks again.

He joins world-renowned licensing expert and inventRightTV host Stephen Key to discuss how he commercialized Better Blocks. Warren describes himself as a reclusive guy who was working out of a shed in his backyard in Adelaide, Australia when he had this idea. He ended up licensing BetterBlocks to a DRTV company and within just 12 months, was thrust into a thriving international business. In its heyday, BetterBlocks were selling around the world in America, Europe, and Australia. To be honest, he says, he was sometimes out of his depth.

Warren had the idea in 1988. It took him a couple of years to make prototypes. Warren describes how his found his licensee and how he pitched his idea. He built an injection molding machine himself to make the blocks. He had about 1,000 blocks when he approached his future licensee. He literally took the blocks with him to the U.S. and asked: What do you think? His licensee filmed Warren and his blocks and then shared it with other people.

Warren explains the challenges of making this idea a reality, why persistence is key, and the importance of family support.

About three years ago, Marina decided to take action on her idea to improve hair extensions. She always wanted long and beautiful-looking hair, but she didn’t like the options on the market, which mainly rely on clips, glue, or other attachment mechanisms. So, she and her partner Mark invented the Luscious Lucks system. There are no clips or glues needed, the three strands of the Luscious Locks system can be braided right into your existing hair. Mark and Marina say, “If your hair is weak and short, Luscious Locks is the answer.”

Mark and Marina explain the process of finding a manufacturer to produce their invention for them, which involved significant trials and tribulations, as well as determining how and where to sell their product. Their first order was for 1,000 units. Today Mark and Marina are actively looking for a licensee for their product.

Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews them about their journey commercializing this invention for the hair and beauty industry and offers some advice. Wilbur licensed his invention Body Furnace to Brownmed, a leader in manufacturing products aimed at improving the quality of life for patients that has been in business for more than 50 years. In this interview with licensing expert and inventRight cofounder Stephen Key, they discuss how Wilbur developed and brought his invention to market. He started working on this project in 2003 because although he loved to hunt deer, he hated getting cold. He started trying to figure out ways to stay warm in his deer stand. He learned about how the body heats itself when your core temperature starts dropping. Brownmed further developed the product after licensing it from Wilbur. It uses reflective heat technology and has a low, medium, and high setting.

Wilbur is proud of his accomplishment, as he should be! Go Wilbur! He also shouts the Inventors Center of Kansas City, which has been a huge help. In fact he met his licensee from an inventors group meeting. His next passion involves wind energy.

Here's how it works: "Simply put, the Body Furnace heats the core, which frees your body to efficiently warm your extremities, including your hands, fingers, feet and toes.

In other words, the Body Furnace works in conjunction with the natural function of the body to keep you warm.

The human body has a certain amount of automatic temperature control, a process called thermoregulation, and attempts to maintain your body core temperature at 98.6°F. Your body has some flexibility; however, it is critical to maintain your bodily temperature within a very narrow range. Hypothermia sets in at just three degrees below our 98.6° baseline temperature.

Your body produces heat for maintaining your core temperature by metabolizing food and muscle activity, this heat is lost through the skin and lung surfaces. When heat loss from a cold environment causes the core temperature to drop, the body's natural thermostat reacts with vasoconstriction, a restriction of blood flow to the extremities and skin surfaces. This is what’s happening when you are feeling discomfort and pain in your hands and feet due to cold. Conversely, when heat is applied to the abdominal area, the core temperature rises causing a condition of vasodilation. Vasodilation expands the veins, allowing increased warm blood flow to reach the skin surfaces and extremities, relieving the discomfort of a cold environment. The Body Furnace heats the core to initiate this process of vasodilation, allowing your body to efficiently warm your extremities.

Technically-speaking, the Body Furnace is a spot warmer that uses patented thermal reflective technology to concentrate heat on the abdominal area for effective deep penetration into the body core, leveraging the natural process of thermoregulation to send heat throughout the body via the circulatory system. This function is much like that of a home's central furnace."

Richard is a parent and an inventor from the UK who observed a significant flaw in his 17 month old son's car seat. Essentially, his son could easily remove his arms from the shoulder strap restraints on his 5-point harness, rendering the car seat almost useless. Richard thought, this is crazy! They had put him in tight, after all. His solution today is known as the 5 Point Plus Anti Escape System, and it replaces the chest clip that is common in American-style baby car seats. Now it sells worldwide!

Richard shares the twists and turns of his invention journey, which includes winning an innovation award in his product category, which resulted in much more attention from potential licensees. Ultimately though, he brought this product to market himself, using the same factory in Thailand that baby car seat makers use. He also licensed his invention to a manufacturer of baby car seats; it now appears on all of the company's car seats.

Kevin is a 30 year-old carpenter who struggled with upper back stress. It was particularly bad in his vehicle — at the time he came up with his invention, his commute was 1.5 hrs long. He began to roll neck towels and bring over-sized bed pillows into his car in an effort to remain comfortable while spending time on the go.

When he first began the real work involved after conception, he backed away and did not pursue it fully because of the the difficult work involved with prototypes, market analysis, and starting a very young family at the time. He says he let the ball drop for a number of years. Realizing that his shoulder tension was still an issue, he set out on a 4 year R&D journey to perfect his concept, which has resulted in unmatched posture support! Thereby reinventing the wheel.

Kevin explains that there is nothing else like his product and no competition when it comes to versatility and practicality. Sara describes how publicly displaying a prototype of your inventions can result in potential ownership issues. Yes, there are opportunities for inventors who are manufacturing to display their product at trade shows like Toy Fair and ChiTAG. But that's not the same as an inventor pitching a prototype; meaning an idea that they have not brought to market yet.

If you have a toy or game idea, you can pitch it by going to these conventions and scheduling private meetings with companies behind closed doors and maybe having signed paperwork as well. Stephen asks Sara about how many ideas she brings, and she explains that while it differs for everyone, she likes to try to bring at least three new product ideas to share. She describes what she brings to show companies, her advice for dealing with intellectual property protection, how she works with inventor relations teams, the editing process, feedback, and more.

This is the first in our new series featuring inventors who have commercialized their inventions. How did they do it? Daniel Chiriac is an inventor from Montreal, Canada. His very cool invention allows an armchair to go to a loveseat in about 30 seconds!

Daniel explains how his invention is not just a design, it's a function. There are a full line of products coming with his technology! He added in an email, “A new version of the Shrinkable Sofa, armchair to/or love seat to/or sofa was made, soon available. It is shipped in a box, transforms in seconds into the furniture you need, no tools needed, everything inside.”

He is a professional mechanical engineer with a master's degree in design and experience in R&D and aerospace. He always tells people that design is made from 2 parts: how it looks, and how it functions. He's with the second one.

Years ago, he looked at his sofa and realized it takes too much space. So he started to imagine how he could shrink it, to have more space available, but also be able to expand it to have comfortable seating when he had guests.

In this interview, licensing expert and inventRight cofounder Stephen Key interviews him about his experience licensing this product on his own. Daniel, thanks for reaching out to share your story of perseverance! It took Daniel four years to get his invention licensed and onto the market. Congratulations Daniel! Your hard work paid off.

Here’s an outline of Daniel’s journey:

His first prototype had 1 to 5 seats for dining room. Looked to find a company to license it all over the world, hundreds of calls, emails, meetings with local companies.

Again, calls and emails, nothing. Everybody looks for innovation, but when presented with one... pass. I realized there are not many functions in furniture: you have reclining, expandable table, Murphy bed, sofa bed... and that's about it. So, bringing a new function was very hard, people were telling me, "I don't like this design.” I was telling them this is a function that you can apply to multiple designs, just like reclining.

And I thought, "That's it!!” My provisional patent application was close to the end, and with this company behind, I wanted to make it everywhere. I thought this is a great product for Europe, where the space is a lot smaller. So, I applied (and paid from my own pocket) a PCT application.

But then I got bad news, that this company was not selling directly, but through retailers. When they asked, nobody wanted this revolutionary idea, so they stopped.

For a while I wanted to stop, but everyone who saw the idea was very excited. I tried Ikea and reached some top managers and engineers, but nothing. Then I tried a Kickstarter campaign to have some publicity, be more visible and get funds to build a ready-to-production model. It failed; I don't have a big presence online and zero funds to make a campaign.

But it was spotted by Business Insider and was featured in all their channels, generating 1.5 million views presently. But still no interest from a manufacturer.

And then, it started with an email to a company in California, they seemed interested, and it was right up their alley for the type of product. It took me almost a year, hundreds of calls, emails. tons of legal modifications to the contract... but this July, after four years of struggling, I signed the licensing agreement with Lifestyle Solutions.

Congratulations Connie! Recently, she reached out to share that she licensed a microfiber pool broom named Aqua Fingers to Waterco! Product licensing expert Stephen Key met inventor Connie G. and her son in Sydney, Australia at a speaking event a couple of years ago.

The granted patent Aqua Fingers® Multi-purpose Microfibre Broom is set to revolutionise the industry by making maintenance quicker and easier.

"This is a truly innovative addition to the pool cleaning accessories category," says group marketing director Bryan Goh. "Nylon pool brooms have been in circulation for 80 years and consumers haven't had a choice of broom that better suits the make of their pool, until now."

She was motivated to create this invention when in 2017, her fiberglass pool had algae and she needed a better way to clean it. The microfiber cloth is removable and can clean fiberglass, tiles and vinyl lined pools. They are allowing her to have an e-commerce website and collect royalties.

Connie is a graphic artist and she has always been handy with making things. She used cardboard, clay, and sticky tape to make her first prototype. She looked for an Australian company to license her invention specifically. Eventually, she met with the product manager and CEO at her current licensee in Sydney and just three days later she was sent a royalty agreement! This company sells worldwide.

She didn’t learn about patents in school and had no idea what a patent was three years ago. She spoke with some attorneys and filed the Australian provisional patent for $110. She later filed for her patents and trademark. They expedited her application. The examiner came back with a negative report. Her attorney agreed with the report and told her to abandon her idea and not pursue her idea anymore after she had already spent 12k with the attorney.

She sent all her material to a new attorney and he said “I can win this for you and I will fight this.” She built a relationship based on trust.

Licensing expert and "One Simple Idea" author Stephen Key interviews Brett Klisch, toy inventor, designer, and founder of The Creative Factor, the official educational event for creatives in the industry at NY Toy Fair since 2004. Events range from classes on design and manufacturing, lectures from patent attorneys and demonstrations on the newest tech in the design and development of toys. Brett explains who this program is for.

Brett is an industry expert with more than 25 years of experience developing products. His specialty is products with play patterns, but he's also worked on everything from boating tools to maternity products.

In 2020, there will be classes from the USPTO on patents; classes on how to design and prototype a game; how to do social media; and more.
