  • How Squatty Potty Made Pooping Cool
    https://www.squattypotty.com/
Judy Edwards and her son Bobby are the inventors of the famous Squatty Potty. They originally had a tough journey trying to figure out how to market a product and topic that no one wants to talk about, pooping! They hired the Harmon Brothers who took the offensive topic of “poop talk” and marketed it in a humorous and whimsical way with unicorns and ice cream. Their infamous commercial has been viewed over 100 million times! Squatty Potty is also one of the most successful Shark Tank pitches of all time.
Aside from the humorous nature of the subject, the benefits of Squatty Potty can be very serious. For some people, it is a life-changing product improving the movement of their bowels. Judy shared that when they first did research on their product they found that two thirds of the world’s population was squatting.
Howard Stern was one of the early adopters of the product. He loves poop talk, so when he tried a Squatty Potty, he raved about it! It was such a new concept at the time getting publicity from famous people like Howard Stern really paid off for them. A year and a half ago, Judy and her husband sold part of the business and stepped back and retired. They are living the American dream!
Their product line has grown and they have added new line extensions for travel and for kids. There is a new portable version of the Squatty Potty that folds so you can carry it and stow it away. They have also added a smaller model that can fit in a suitcase. Recently, they had an inventor approach them with a great idea called the Invisibrush and they did a licensing deal to add the product to their line. The new product is a toilet brush that goes behind the toilet tank so you can’t see it and it isn’t lying on the floor.

  • This Photographer Collects Royalties On His Unique Framing Solution
Andrew Darlow is a photographer, author, coach, and inventor who learned about
licensing through one of inventRight’s initial webinars years ago. Later Stephen
met Andrew in person at an inventors group in New York.
Andrew first identified a problem about 11 years ago when his wooden frames holding his flower photography were damaged during transport to an exhibition at a gallery. There were a number of gouges and scratches in the wooden frame afters transporting them to and from the event. As we all know, custom framing can be expensive and especially for an entire collection of pieces. Andrew invented a product called the GalleryPouch custom bubble bag. Andrew licensed the product and he now receives a royalty. They are made by hand, one by one in Dallas, Texas by FrameDestination.com. The bubble material can’t easily be popped, it’s heavyweight and durable, and you can customize your order by quantity, shape, and size. Andrew describes the challenges he ran into, including manufacturing and sourcing. His product has a unique proposition in the marketplace and isn't protected with intellectual property.
Andrew Darlow feels very grateful that he learned about licensing and the process from inventRight webinars that Stephen Key and Andrew Krauss put on all those years ago. Andrew’s advice to his fellow inventors is to make connections with the people who are selling products in an area that you are interested in and to find out what you personally want and then simply follow the process that Stephen Key teaches.

  • This Professional Inventor Has Licensed 50+ Products!
Amanda Hutton is a full-time inventor. Check out her new hit product Push-N-Pop by Ethical Products: https://youtu.be/ONBv26Y6A68
She began inventing and licensing products for the toy industry in 1992. She started in the pet industry in 2003. Because she liked it so much, she decided to focus on just pet products beginning in 2006. In the early 90’s, she worked as a full-time travel agent. As her inventing business grew, she began working as a part time agent in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. By 2002, she was working on her design business full-time.
Her degree is actually in biology with a minor in art history, but she was always a big game player especially board games. Being a travel agent as well as enjoying board games, she got an idea for a travel game. Passport was her first game design. Unfortunately she never licensed that game. (In the early 90’s, travel and educational games were not considered very marketable.) However, she enjoyed the ideation and creation of the board game so much that she designed another one and another one. On just her fourth try, she licensed Leapin’ Lily Pads, a dart board game, in 1995!
Of the more than 50 products she has licensed in her career, most have made it to market. A few did not due to manufacturing issues or management changes.
In this long interview, licensing expert and inventor Stephen Key interviews Amanda about what it takes to become successful as a professional inventor; the toy industry and the pet industry; what her day to day is like; and more.
Some of her other successful pet products on the market today include:

  • Meet the Remarkable Inventor of Billy Bob Teeth!
    https://www.billybobproducts.com/
The Billy Bob Teeth Company has manufactured over 22 million Billy Bob Teeth, selling to over 95% of the countries in the world!
The history of Billy Bob Teeth: As the name Billy Bob Teeth Incorporated implies, our company's origin has a toothy beginning. Our very first product was the world famous Billy Bob Teeth. When a dental student named Rich Bailey met an entrepreneur in the making, Jonah White, in the fall of 1993, history was made and they changed the way the world forever puts on their smile. The location was a college football game at Jonah's alma mater, Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri.
This story and many more are outlined further in Jonah's book, "The Billy Bob Secret To: Life."
Jonah White recalls, "I was trying to watch the game with 15,000 other spectators and here comes this hillbilly across the stands with these bucked-out teeth talking and flirting with the crowd and cheerleaders. He was so confident insisting that he was better looking than Mel Gibson and not being shy, asking for multiple girls' phone numbers in the same sentence. Only out of complete luck did I meet Rich after the game and get let in on his secret of the 'Billy Bob Teeth.'"
"Rich and I became friends and he taught me how to make the Billy Bob Teeth. Up to that point, he had only made 3 pair!"
Our company "sunk its teeth" into the novelty market even deeper in 1998 with the invention of the "Billy Bob Pacifier". An actual baby pacifier adorned with oversized buck teeth on the face shield. "We had our first baby that August and I was so put out that all the pacifiers out there were so boring.", recalls Jonah. With this addition to our line of products, the Billy Bob Teeth Company opened up even more global markets.
Within the span of just a few years our pacifier assortment grew from a handful of novelty pacifiers to over 70 designs. Most quite tasteful. This is one of our most successful product lines currently. All in all over 300 items are manufactured and sold worldwide by Billy Bob Incorporated.
Our most recent addition to our product line came from Rich Bailey's expertise as a dentist. "I've been helping people improve their smile for 10 years now as a licensed dentist. Many people just do not have the money or time to seek the audience of a dentist. Let's face it - conventional dentistry is expensive. Some people need an inexpensive route to fix their smile," Rich said. So Rich unveiled "Dr. Bailey's The Secure Smile," a do-it-yourself smile makeover kit. Already selling in Europe, Australia, Japan and the Middle East, the Secure Smile adds yet another dimension to this already "outside the box" company.

  • Varieties of Prototypes & When You Need Them
    https://www.linkedin.com/in/jesse-faunce-3076433/
Do you need a prototype? What kind and when? What are the different kinds of prototypes and when is it smart to invest in them? Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Jesse Faunce, a mechanical engineer who helps inventors prototype their inventions.
Jesse says: "I am a mechanical engineer and own a small prototyping product development type company. We specialize in taking an idea in the form of a napkin sketch or just a verbal concept from entrepreneurs and inventors, as well as companies that have established products in the market, through to the process of realizing that idea. Sometimes that’s just CAD drawings or 3D models that demonstrate a bunch of different ways to accomplish what they're trying to do. We also prototype 3D models.
Sometimes it’s just a quick project that they can hold in their hand, to feel the ergonomics of something, and sometimes it's as basic as working out a mechanism. For example, a client wants to try to fit a mechanism in a certain sized package. Can we do that? Can you work out something? Things like that.
Other times, I work with someone who has a product similar to another product, but they want to make it their own. They want to add their own features and that sort of thing and I will take their ideas and put them on paper and put them on the screen so that we can see how the different components will work together. There are a million different things I've done in the past!
I’ve worked for a couple of different product development companies. Those products included juvenile sippy cups, utensils, bath slings, potties, all kinds of interesting things like that."
Jesse’s company Faunce Enterprises offers affordable engineering, product development, and prototype services for inventors, small companies, entrepreneurs, and large companies as well. His services include feasibility consultation, 3D design, 3D printing, CNC Machining, and Prototyping & Fixtures

  • Paul Sold $10 Million Direct-to-Consumer!
    https://cozyphones.com/
    https://www.linkedin.com/in/the-paul-miller/
Paul Miller is a veteran and the founder and CEO of CozyPhones, headphones you can wear while you sleep. He has been both a licensee to Nickelodeon and a licensor to his distributor. He has directly manufactured and sold more than $10 million in direct to consumer sales online, selling primarily on Amazon. He took an existing concept and modified it for a whole new audience: Children. Younger kids ages 3-5 don't like over-the-ear headphones because they get hot and sweaty. They also don't really like earbuds. You can't lie down with either of these forms of headphones! CozyPhones are different.
Paul is also a past inventRight student. He opens up about his journey as an inventor and an entrepreneur, from taking a selling on Amazon course to bringing his own idea for a new product to market. He also discusses protection and knockoffs at length. One clever way he handled dealing with knockoffs is by licensing character images from well-known brands like Paw Patrol. As he explains, copycats are less likely to try to knockoff a well-known brand. He and Stephen discuss the terms of licensing agreements from the perspective of a manufacturer. He also discusses being approached to license out his product into big-box retailers.
With licensing the options can be endless. He also sells on Walmart.com.
    Learn more about Paul's journey:
I'm Paul, founder of CozyPhones. I don't sleep well at night. I can get to sleep fine but I often wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, so I listen to podcasts or audio books until I drift back to sleep.
Awhile ago I bought some sleeping headphones. They lasted less than a year before the wires shorted out and the stopped working. I used earbuds for a short time but they became painful after awhile and it's just about impossible to sleep with them on your side. I decided to try another pair of headband headphones, but the original ones I bought were just too expensive - so I decided to make my own - with comfort and affordability as out main goal - with that, CozyPhones was born.
We started with just a fleece headband version but quickly found our customers wanted more, so we added new styles and materials to fit more needs like yoga and running. Then one day, we were doing a photo shoot for our catalog when my photographer shot a few pics of her 10 year old daughter with our headphones on, using her app on a tablet. That picture gave me an "aha moment". We could make super comfortable headband headphones for kids in fun character designs. So I asked my daughter Helen, a budding artist, to come up with some characters for me. That's how we created our first Froggy design. They went for sale in November of 2015 and quickly sold out.
Since then we've added a bunch of new characters and styles. We've heard from hundreds of parents of kids who LOVE our CozyPhones and we've found a great niche in the Autism and Sensory Disorder communities. We're so happy to be able provide a great solution to all kids and especially pleased to serve special need kids who struggle normal headphones.
It's been a great journey so far and we're just getting started.
