  • This Inventor Just Licensed a Device That Helps Dyslexics
Congratulations Rob!! Rob is a teacher and an athletic coach who licensed his second product idea using the inventRight 10-step process to license an idea. He discusses his journey as an inventor and the challenges and excitement of realizing your dreams.
Rob explains how he came up with the Word Tracker:
I came up with the idea of The Word Tracker at the completion of my son's dyslexia program ceremony. A teacher in the program was being honored for her work she had done with certain dyslexic students. In honoring her she was allowed to demonstrate techniques she used when tutoring students. When sharing her reading strategies, she used a reading aide called an EZ reader reading strip which is basically an 6 inch ruler without any numbers. The reading strip allowed her to track sentences, but it was clumsy, awkward and it only served one purpose which was to track words and sentences linearly. I felt it did little in supporting the Orton-Gillingham curriculum. So I created a product with the solution in mind. How do you learn to read? Using my experience as a teacher and a parent of a dyslexic child, I knew part of the problem was in decoding words. So I developed a product that allows you to decode words with speed and fluency, The Word Tracker! What I didn't realize is The Word Tracker is a literacy product that's cross-categorical. It can be used in any reading curriculum to decode numbers, can decode different languages, can be used as a fidget tool, and for older students as well (High School and Adult Ed).

  • Part 2: This Toy Broker is Looking For Your Ideas
We asked toy industry expert Matt Nuccio of Design Edge to come back on inventRightTV to explain what happened after his interview about how he helps toy inventors went live on our channel last month. (Watch Stephen's first interview with Mat Nuccio here: https://youtu.be/UjGCUiTnY0o)
Matt explains that he received literally thousands of ideas! So many ideas, in fact, that they became overwhelming — and difficult to keep track of. He received paragraphs of information in emails and people who called him up to say, 'Hey I had this idea this morning....' So Matt made the difficult decision that he needed to begin charging for product reviews. This is not something he has done in 30 years! To be fair, he also received a lot of great submissions.
Take Matt's words to heart: Explaining what your product is and does in a lengthy way is not an effective strategy. When it comes to evaluating, it's not only about your product; it's about you — if you're being respectful of others' time, if you're acting like a professional, if you're serious about becoming a toy inventor. Otherwise you get put in the amateur camp! Relationships are everything in this business. They're the key to success. He understands that inventors are passionate and dying to get their ideas out there. But that doesn't mean you should get upset and make demands. Respect the courting process! Matt explains what he is looking for.
Licensing expert Stephen Key is on a mission to help inventors become more professional.
Matt Nuccio is a very successful toy inventor who has attended New York City's Toy Fair for more than 30 consecutive years! His company Design Edge is the back-end to a lot of toy companies; for example it does their design, development, engineering, and even sourcing. Through those contacts, he has been able to license dozens and dozens of toy ideas. He began attending Toy Fair as a 14-year-old because his parents were in the industry. Talk about an industry insider! Licensing expert and toy inventor himself Stephen Key interviews Matt about the toy business and inventors.

  • Watch These Inventing Partners Share Their Big Win
Kirk and Brian are inventing partners who recently licensed an innovative wrench that makes it easier to get into tight spaces such as behind sinks and toilets and approach the valve from the back. Kirk is a renovation contractor who renovates houses and commercial spaces and he actually met Ryan when he renovated his house for about 6 to 8 months. Once they worked on the wrench more they realized it had many applications relevant to the automotive, aerospace, industrial, and home improvement industries. He made his first prototype by baking clay in the oven.
“One Simple Idea” provided the road map of where to go and how to license his product. Brian downloaded the audio version and has now listened to the book 9 times! Kirk and Brian are very happy now that they have licensed a product. After one company reviewed it for more than a year and gave him a “no,” Kirk felt deflated and set it down for a while working on other projects.
When Brian came on as a partner they were able to divide the roles and have a successful team. Brian’s sales experience was an asset for making the list of companies and cold calling companies. Kirk focused on innovating and PPAs. They have a great team! Kirk said it felt “fabulous” to sign the contract and it was a long time coming. Kirk and Brian are working on another product for the BBQ industry which they hope to license very soon.
Their advice: “One Simple Idea” is the roadmap that anybody can use and needs. You have to apply the principles. Find a partner. Hang in there. It’s a long journey. Believe in your dreams. You might be the only one thinking it's a great idea. You’ve got to preserve and work extra hours to get it done.

  • How This inventRight Student Landed a Licensing Deal
inventRight cofounder Andrew Krauss interviews inventor and former inventRight student David C. about how he licensed his kitchen storage/organizational product along with inventRight coach and lead negotiator Paul Sorenson. They discuss what it's really like being a product developer who loves coming up with new ideas and submitting them to companies, including calling companies, fear, contract negotiations, the great importance and often necessity of being willing to redesign your product, and more. David is originally from Mexico and after a couple weeks of calling companies, he got into a groove. Today although he doesn't love it, he also doesn't mind it.
David just signed his deal in the past couple of weeks. When his product is on the market, we will add a link here and in the comments section.

  • How This Industrial Designer Became an Entrepreneur
John Paulick is an industrial design engineer and an early adopter of the emerging discipline of biomimicry, aka sustainable, nature-inspired design. He is the creator of the Wine Hive and an inventRight student. The Wine Hive is a clever way of storing your wine collection that allows you customize its setup to your exact needs in a pleasing honeycomb shape. They are sold in modular packs; common sizes are 6, 12, and 24 bottle sets. Also comes in black, silver, gold, and nickel! At first — and many times — John attempted to license this idea. Cool product, potential licensees said! But they were wary that their customers would want to take on that much setup themselves. So John decided to launch on Kickstarter himself instead in March of 2012. His goal was to raise $15,000 for manufacturing and an initial production run. He ended up raising more than $65,000! It took a lot of work, but the supporters made it worthwhile. John is grateful to this day. Licensing expert Stephen Key interviews John about how he launched the Wine Hive using crowdfunding back in the day and what happened next.

April read Stephen's bestselling book about product licensing 'One Simple Idea' and had about a dozen of companies interested in her idea before she became an inventRight student. Licensing expert and inventRight cofounder Stephen Key interviews April about her experience commercializing her invention, including the prototyping process, making her product demonstration video, how long signing a licensing agreement took, and more. The Right Height Adjustable heights over the door hook will be available in three colors! They have been shipped; stay tuned to find out where you can grab one or two very soon. Paul Maguire is a professional product developer. He develops new products for a living. It's not an easy job, but it's definitely a fun one. He studied plastics engineering in college at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he learned about making products with plastics. (This is one of the only majors like this in the country.) For 15 years, he did product development for other people, including for medical startups and consumer sporting goods companies. In this interview, licensing expert Stephen Key interviews Paul about what it's like being a full-time inventor. He currently works for a startup named Stasher (a very popular product seen on 'Shark Tank') as well as pursues his own ideas.
They discuss a range of topics, including studying the market and identifying opportunities, making improvements to existing products, the importance of cost, manufacturing specs, and more. Thank you Paul for sharing your expertise!
