"A Message to Summer (by Teachers)"
by Nishi Langhorne and Megan Sherrill (@MeganSherrillAP)
Take your time
Don’t be afraid to shine your sunny face
But please spare us tears of rain
Give us new places to explore
Arduous mountains, sparkling city scapes
sandy beaches, hammocks in parks
Fireworks and sparklers
Festivals and barbeques
New books to read, be they trashy or mindless
And new Netflix shows to binge
Quirky comedies, wild westerns, dark documentaries
Whatever you do, please don’t let us run into a student while at the pool
Find us sweet, well-behaved babies to snuggle with
Give us the time to rest and rejuvenate
Without papers to grade, deadlines to meet, peers to collaborate with
Our collaboration should only be centered on friends, fun,
and a frothy beverage of our choosing
Let us cuddle up with our cats and dawdle with our dogs
Breakdance with our birds and lounge with our lizards
And play board games when bored
Uno attack, Candyland, and Monopoly
And pool games when hot
Sharks and Minnows and Marco Polo
But please, pretty please, protect us from the parents
No side encounters, no backyard bump-ins, no accidental sightings
Summer, we look forward to meeting you again
Our long-lost friend
Don’t be such a stranger
