Oracle and Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) have announced the launch of Oracle Database@AWS, a new offering that allows customers to access Oracle Autonomous Database on dedicated infrastructure and Oracle Exadata Database Service within AWS. Oracle Database@AWS will provide customers with a unified experience between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and AWS, offering simplified database administration, billing, and unified customer support.

In addition, customers will have the ability to seamlessly connect enterprise data in their Oracle Database to applications running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), AWS Analytics services, or AWS's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) services, including Amazon Bedrock.

With direct access to Oracle Exadata Database Service on AWS, including Oracle Autonomous Database on dedicated infrastructure and workloads running on Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Oracle Database@AWS allows customers to bring together all of their enterprise data to drive breakthrough innovation.

The new offering provides a low latency network connection between Oracle databases and applications on AWS. This allows customers to benefit from Oracle Autonomous Database, a fully automated and managed Oracle Database service, and the performance, availability, security, and cost-effectiveness of Oracle Exadata Database Service, while enjoying the security, agility, flexibility, and sustainability benefits provided by AWS.

Oracle Database@AWS will help customers continue to accelerate their migration to the cloud and modernise their IT environments. Customers can also benefit from:

Zero-ETL integration between Oracle Database services and AWS Analytics services. Customers will be able to seamlessly and securely connect and analyse data across Oracle Database services and applications they already have running on AWS to get faster, deeper insights without having to build pipelines.

Flexible options to simplify and accelerate migrating their Oracle databases to the cloud, including compatibility with proven migration tools such as Oracle Zero Downtime Migration.

A simplified procurement experience via AWS Marketplace that enables customers to purchase Oracle Database services using their existing AWS commitments and use their existing Oracle license benefits, including Bring Your Own License (BYOL) and discount programs such as Oracle Support Rewards (OSR).

A fully unified support experience from both AWS and Oracle as well as guidance through reference architectures, landing zones, and other collateral for customers to successfully build and run their most trusted enterprise applications in the cloud.

Seamless integration with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for an easy and secure way to perform database backups and restoration, and to aid with disaster recovery.

In a new TG4 series from IWR Media, Caomhnóirí na Talún, they follow five Irish farmers over the course of a year as they farm with nature. From an extensive suckler farm on Inis Mór island to the karst beauty of the Burren to the dairy heartland of east Cork, ther cameras follow as these farmers create and conserve habitats on their farms, pioneer new ideas and try to find a way to protect wildlife and their living.

Irish farmers, trying to balance nature and farming

Across the country we've seen catastrophic declines of birds, wild bees and native plants. Even once common birds of our farmland and open countryside like the skylark and kestrel, are now in deep trouble.

The intensification of farming and forestry directed by policy and payments over decades, is seen as one of the most significant contributors to these losses - as land use changed, as wetlands and bogs were drained and reclaimed, as pesticide use and chemical fertiliser increased or as grass management changed such as the switch from hay meadows to silage. As more and more land was brought into production, there was less and less space for wildlife.

Yet if biodiversity is to improve, if habitat loss can be reversed or even halted, it is across Irish farmland that change will happen. If it's to happen, farmers are the ones who will turn this crisis around. And across the country there's a growing number of farmers who are forging that path and farming with nature.

Over the course of a year, our cameras follow five of these farmers as they create habitats like ponds, nettle patches or bee scrapes on their farms. As they let their hedgerows grow, blossom and fruit. As they discover treasure in the fields. As they adopt new farming techniques like mob grazing or no-till to regenerate soil on intensive ground.

Or as they keep faith with traditions such as the winterage [winter grazing] that maintain the wildflower beauty of landscapes like the Burren and the Aran islands. All while trying the find a balance between nature and the realities of making a living from farming.

The Farmers

Pádraic Ó Flaithearta has a small dry stock suckler herd on Inis Mór and like hundreds of farmers across the Aran islands, Pádraic farms traditionally in one of the most unique habitats of machair and species-rich grassland. John Arnold and his wife Mary run a dairy farm in Bartlemy, east Cork and are part of the flagship farmer-led B.R.I.D.E project [Biodiversity Regeneration in a Dairying Environment].

Full-time teacher and part-time farmer Eoin Collins, farms a suckler beef herd with Dad Michael in Kilfenora, Co. Clare where traditional farming practices maintain the rich flora of their Burren land.

Journalist and organic farmer Hannah Quinn-Mulligan farms in partnership with her grandmother Catherine on their Limerick farm where Hannah's been increasing habitats and trialing new farming practices to help nature. And outside Maynooth, Norman Dunne, alongside Dad Michael, has switched to a regenerative farming approach which sees him try to rebuild fertility and life in the soil after decades of intensive tillage.

A new startup venture based in the ADAPT Research Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology at Trinity College Dublin, aims to transform the content licensing industry with an innovative service, assisted by artificial intelligence (AI).

The project has secured €390,000 funding from Enterprise Ireland through the Commercialisation Fund.

Contenseo aims to connect copyright holders and publishers with people who want high-quality content to engage and grow their audiences. The system saves time and money by making the licensing of content convenient, swift and secure.

Led by principal investigator, Dr Carl Vogel, the startup will provide content owners with the opportunity to earn more income from their copyrighted material, while offering buyers a better way to access high-quality content.

Stephen Conmy, co-founder of Contenseo, said: 'Our ethos is to help and reward the creators and copyright owners of high-quality content. Our system is a place where creators can register and then license their work - including written work, video, audio, images and designs. The system also makes it much easier and faster for people who want to license (buy) high-quality content. And they can do so easily, by using our innovative Licence Finder.'

Contenseo's online service bridges the gap between those looking to license their content and those in need of high-quality, licensable material. Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon (LTTS) welcomed a flying visit from a 400,000 piece Lego 'Leap' Aircraft Engine, which was showcased to employees, family members and students from the local area today. An incredible piece of structural Lego engineering of intricate detail and accuracy, the fully working model weighs almost half a tonne and took six months to complete.

Coming in at 60% of actual size and complete with its own security, the Lufthansa Lego Aircraft Engine is modelled on a Leap, a type of engine (CFM Leap-1B & -1A engines) used in the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320NEO aircraft. Making its Irish debut, the Lego model was the brainchild of a Lufthansa Technik employee in Germany.

With Lego a multi-generational kit that appeals to people of all ages, Pat Foley, CEO of LTTS commented that its visit to Shannon provided an opportunity for young people from schools in the region to visit the LTTS site to understand the type of work undertaken by the company, offering them a chance to explore the opportunities that might be open to them in the future.

"In Ireland we are expanding year-on-year and hope we can encourage some of these fantastic young people to be the next generation of apprentices, mechanics, engineers, maintenance and HR professionals at LTTS," he said.

LTTS specialises in the repair of components for aircraft engine turbines and has been operating in the Shannon region for more than 30 years.

A €19.6 million partnership project, which aims to be the stepping stone towards large scale wave energy commercialisation, has received formal go-ahead from the European Union.

WEDUSEA is a pioneering collaboration between 14 partners, spanning industry and academia from across the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Spain. It is co-ordinated by the Irish company OceanEnergy.

The project is co-funded by the EU Horizon Europe Programme and by Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency.

In common with all other Horizon Europe projects, WEDUSEA has undergone a comprehensive independent review by EU appointed external experts following its initial project design period to ensure the technical designs and all plans, budgets and protocols are fully in place and approved.

The green light has now been received from the EU and the project can proceed to its next stage.

The WEDUSEA project will demonstrate a grid connected 1MW OE35 floating wave energy converter at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) wave energy test site at Billia Croo in Orkney, Scotland. A rigorous technical and environmental demonstration will happen over a two-year period in Atlantic wave conditions.

OceanEnergy has developed the OE35, which is the world's largest capacity floating wave energy device. Floating on the ocean's surface, the device incorporates a trapped air volume, with the lower part open to the sea. Wave pressures at the submerged opening cause the water to oscillate and drive the trapped air through a turbine to generate electricity. Electricity generated will be exported to the UK grid via EMEC's subsea cables.

Prof Tony Lewis, Chief Technical Officer at OceanEnergy, says: "Wave energy is the world's most valuable renewable resource with around 30TWh of potential annual production waiting to be harnessed. That's almost ten times Europe's annual electricity consumption. However, this potential has yet to be fully realised.

The project will demonstrate that wave technology is on a cost reduction trajectory and will thus be a stepping stone to larger commercial array scale up and further industrialisation. We predict that the natural energy of the world's oceans will one day supply much of the grid."

The WEDUSEA project has three phases. The first phase is the initial design and build of a device suited to the ocean conditions at EMEC's Billia Croo wave energy test site. This will be followed by the demonstration at the site, lasting two years. The final phase will be commercialisation and dissemination which sees the capitalisation and exploitation of the results.

Matthijs Soede from the European Commission said at the start of the project: "WEDUSEA is set to be a major catalyst for the wave energy industry, unlocking the full potential of this exciting renewable technology.

Prof Lars Johanning of University of Plymouth says: "The WEDUSEA partnership has worked hard to ensure that all detailed designs and planning are robust, to prove that the project is viable and that the project will be delivered within budget. Now we have received the green light from the EU, it's all systems go!"

The wave converter build starts in the second half of 2024 and the demonstration at EMEC is expected to begin in June 2025.

Shannon Chamber has launched the programme for the second annual 'Sustainability Week, which will be held in Shannon from Wednesday, 25 September to Wednesday, 2 October.

The 'Week', which features ten events and a day-long conference, is being delivered by Shannon Chamber via its member-led Mid-West Sustainability Network. It is sponsored by ESB and supported by companies including, Eli Lilly, Ei Electronics, EY, Climeaction, Element Six, Astatine, AIB, Shannon Chamber Skillnet, GreenTech Skillnet, Antaris Consulting, Mavarick, Vitalograph, Fine Grain Property and Aerogen.

A unique addition to the Sustainability Week 2024 programme will be the placement, by ESB, of their new Hydrogen Power Unit at the Shannon Airport Business Park to highlight the versatility of hydrogen fuel cell technology in different applications.

The demonstration will be in place for the full week and will be open for guided tours on Monday, 30 September and Tuesday, 1 October from 10am to 4pm.Advance booking is required, and visits will be accommodated in groups of six.
