  • Ria Reads 2 Cor 11-13: Gal 1-2
In the final three chapters of 2 Corinthians, Paul warns the church to guard against deception and from moving away from the simplicity of Christ; he recounts the many things he could boast about including suffering for Christ’s sake and the sake of the gospel but asserts that it’s better to be weak for Christ’s sake because then he is strong. He then concludes in chapter 13 by reasserting his authority as an apostle, admonishing the believers to examine themselves and pronouncing the benediction upon the people from the God of love and peace.
The next couple chapters in the reading are from the book of Galatians, also written by the Apostle Paul to the church at Galatia. He was addressing a distorted teaching that was circulating amongst the brethren that faith in Jesus Christ was not enough to be saved. That they had to do more by keeping the law including circumcision. Paul challenges this and defends the message he had taught them, that only faith in Jesus Christ can make one right with God and attract God’s approval. Nothing else.

  • Olakunle Reads 1 Cor 4-7
Paul begins 1 Corinthians 4 by agreeing that he and the other ministers are servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. In that role, it does matter that they are faithful, and the Lord will judge their works when the time comes. Paul, though, is not worried about the opinion of the Corinthians or anyone else. They are not his judges. He refuses even to judge himself. That is the Lord’s work
In 1 Corinthians 5, Paul confronts the church for ignoring an ongoing case of incest by a member of the church. Instead of feeling sad about the sin in which this man was openly indulging, the Corinthians continued to be proud of themselves and judgmental of others.
Paul reminds the Corinthians they are not like those outside of the church. The wicked or unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom. They will not share in God’s glory forever. The unrighteous are labeled by their sinful activities: sexual immorality, idol worship, adultery, practicing homosexuality, stealing, greed, regular drunkenness, and spewing angry insults
How should Christians think about marriage? Is it better to be married or not? Should married Christians have sex? Paul provides clear and sometimes surprising answers to these questions in 1 Corinthians chapter 7.

  • Ria Reads Rom 16- 1 Cor 1-3
Paul ends his letter to the Romans in chapter 16 with greetings and final salutations to various members of the church; he gives a warning about causing division in the church; and he concludes with a benediction to the ‘only wise God’.
Next in the reading is the book of 1 Corinthians, written by Paul to the church he founded at Corinth, which is a city in ancient Greece that was a successful trade centre and metropolis famous for sporting events and contests. The city was known for sophisticated multiculturalism, intense religiosity and rampant sin including temple prostitution.
Paul stayed with the church for about a year and a half when he started it, but after he left the church began experiencing severe problems among the mixture of believers – amongst the Jews and non-Jews, among the wealthy and the slaves. And it is into this context that Paul writes this letter teaching the believers how to get along and exhorting them with the simple message of Jesus Christ crucified.
And so the first three chapters opens with Paul’s greetings in chapter 1 and his expression of thankfulness for the church while also calling them out for the division over loyalties to their different spiritual leaders. He calls the wisdom of the world foolishness compared to God’s wisdom.
And In chapter 2 he states his commitment to know nothing else but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. He then explains that he is coming to them with power and the Spirit and not just with words. And he ends chapter 2 with a comparison between the natural man and the spiritual man.
In chapter 3 he introduces the idea of working together with God to build and therefore warning that they should be careful of how they build. He ends chapter 3 with the admonition that the people are the temple of God with the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of them.
