Is check signing really an internal control? [Time Waster]

Listen Later

Is check signing really an internal control or is it simply a Time Waster? Many accounts payable professionals question whether check signing is really an internal control and for good reason. Accounts payable internal controls are critical to running an efficient and effective function. And if check signing is a non-value add task, then it definitely is not an internal control. #checksigning in #accountspayable is an often-disputed #internalcontrol. Check signing takes up a lot of time and people wonder if it adds value. If upfront controls are in place and are strong some question whether adding a manual signature to checks is a task that has any value. Accounting and accounts payable professionals can spend a good deal of time making sure checks are issued properly.

Manual signatures on paper checks, sometimes referred to as wet signatures on paper checks may or may not add value to the process. The alternative is to rely on strong controls. Of particular question are signatures on rush checks when the documentation is sparse. Signatures on these asap checks is the norm, if they are produced outside the normal check production cycle. The documentation for rush checks, sometimes referred to as backup for rush checks may not provide adequate data to verify the payment.
