I was working in a coffee shop the other day when I couldn't help but overhear a conversation between the two women sitting next to me. Listening to this meeting between a boss and junior employee, I was struck by how hard to the younger woman was working to be the "okay maker," to remain pleasant, accepting and tolerant of the utter nonsense of this conversation she was being forced to participate in, a conversation where she was having to explain and defend a list of insignificant micro differences between the ways she took care of herself in the workplace and what her boss wanted a "team player" to act like.
It reminded me of all the times when I had normalized being treated like less than, times when I had thought it was normal and fine to just put up with weird abuses of power, environments that compromised my values, and relationships where I was held in a dehumanized, inferior position. It reminded me of how I had accepted all of this without question, without noticing how easy it would have been to just treat people better, without taking in how dysfunctional and abusive these dynamics really were at times.
So in today's episode I'm encouraging you to consider a new question.
Where in your life do you need to raise your standards?
