Welcome all to IS PHARMACOLOGY DIFFICULT Podcast! I am Dr Radhika Vijay and today lets hit half a century with a brand new barrier to drug distribution namely the Placental barrier where we will discuss the passage of drugs across placenta. Firstly, I will tell you about the lipoidal nature of membranes and then accordingly I will list the drugs that pass or are restricted through it. Next, I will give an account of efflux transporters like P-gp, BCRP and MRP3, then I will be describing some influx transporters, their effect on drug passage, then next we will talk about importance of "ion trapping" with reference to context of placenta, and finally we will conclude the fact of Placenta being an incomplete barrier and hence no drug should be given to the pregnant mother, not even before delivery!! With these interesting, small, quick, crisp facts, we will wind up today's session. Till next episode, do follow me here, stay tuned, thank you!!
