The Meaning of Labor Day

We gladly grab any opportunity for a holiday and time away from work!

Labor Day (also known as May Day in some parts of the world) is one such day in the calendar that we look forward to – having an extended weekend, potentially taking the entire week off to go on holiday or simply relax.

But what truly is Labor Day?  How did it come to be? Most importantly, what lessons can we Muslims take from this “holiday” and offer solutions from Islam.

Establishing a Constitution – an imperative for the Muslims in Afghanistan

When we ask the question of what must be done after acquiring a land, the answer is definitively establishing a constitution.

Evidence for this comes from what ‘Ali Ibn Abi Taalib (ra) wrote and was dictated to him by Muhammad the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the very first written constitution by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon the Hijrah from Makkah to Al-Madinah.

Afghanistan occupies the center stage in the world and Muslims around the globe are watching and yearning for the implementation of  the only system that solves  the problem of tribalism and nationalism  and unifies the society.

A welcome sign to parents but sometimes a sad sign for students is the beginning of the new school year!

With in-person school planned for many communities around the world, we again look to a school year where our youth spend more time in school interacting with their classmates, their teachers, learning concepts about life than they interact with their parents or siblings.

Let's ask, Are schools just about Math, Science, and Job Skills?

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Hisham (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) would learn the following du’a for when the new month or new year would begin:

اللّهم أَدْخِلْهُ عَلينا بِالأمْنِ وَالإيمان، وَالسَّلامَةِ وَالإسْلام، وِجوارٍ مِّنَ الشَّيْطان، وَرِضْوَانٍ مِّنَ الرَّحْمن.

Allahumma adkhilhu ‘alayna bil amni wal iman, was salamati wal islam, wa jiwarim minash shaytan, wa ridwanim minar Rahman.

O Allah, bring this [month or year] upon us with security, iman, safety, Islam, protection from shaytan, and your pleasure.

(Mu’jamus Sahabah of Baghawi, & Al-Mu’jamul Awsat of Tabarani, Hadith: 6237)

Let’s Ponder upon the way in which Allah سبحانه وتعالى presents to us the weighty month of Muharram. It is a sacred month alongside Dhul Qa’dah, Dhul Hijjah and Rajab.  Indeed, it is a month of marking a transformation.

 

In this month of Muharram,like in any month of the year, there are many important events that took place from which the Muslim generations can learn many lessons.

However, today we are going to focus on one of the most important events that took place in this month and on the 10th day of Muharram, and that is the shahdah of the grandson of Rasulallah (saaw), Hussain ibn Ali (rz) and his family and friends at the hands of other Muslims.

This event and the incidents that led up to this tragedy needs to be reflected upon by every Muslim of all times so we can learn valuable lessons from it and refresh our commitment to the obedience of Allah (swt).
