In this 12th episode of Figure It and the third in a series of episodes devoted to energy, Sapienta Economics Director Fiona Mullen talks to Peter Stevenson, East Mediterranean Editor at the specialist oil and gas publication, Middle East Economic Survey (MEES). They discuss the announcement made on 15 February by the Italian oil and gas company, ENI, about its natural gas discovery in the Cronos reserve of the Republic of Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). What did the rather technical announcement mean? And can we expect natural gas to be exported from there by late 2026 or early 2027, as the government has suggested? In this 11th episode of Figure It and the second in a series of episodes devoted to energy, Sapienta Economics Director Fiona Mullen talks to Ahmet Sözen, a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and a veritable ‘ideas factory’ when it comes to new approaches to the Cyprus problem. Prof Sözen is also part of the Eastern Mediterranean Initiative of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and has recently produced papers with Diplomeds on Eastern Mediterranean energy issues. In this episode we discuss the proposals put forward in these papers, such “engagement without recognition” and why it is in the EU’s broader security interests to get involved in East Med energy issues. UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar has arrived on the island and started her work by paying a visit to the Cypriot leaders. This new initiative to revive the talks, which collapsed in Crans Montana conference in 2017, is defined as an attempt to find a "common ground" for the formal talks to start. In this episode of Nicosia Uncut, Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykalli question the endgame of this new initiative as there is no sign for the sides to shift their diametrically opposed positions. Supported by Turkey, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has been elected to pursue "a two-state solution" and officially rejected to get engaged in any initiative based on a federal model. Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides who was part of the Greek Cypriot team during the collapse in 2017 and supported by the "rejectionist parties" in his election campaign continues to express his commitment to the federal model as defined in the relevant UN resolutions and reject to discuss anything outside these parameters. In a parallel move, the Republic of Cyprus government has announced 14 points of "good-will gesture" towards the Turkish Cypriots before the arrival of the new envoy. Gerek çevrim içi radyo programı gerekse podcast olarak devam eden yolculuklarının onuncu sene-i devriyesi nedeniyle Evren, Kemal ve Sertaç geçmişin bir muhasebesini yapıyorlar. Kemal'ın Türkçe bilmeyen konuğu Türkçe biliyor diye stüdyoya sokması, Evren'in dilinin sürçtüğü o efsane bölüm, Sertaç'ın ezber bozan çıkışları, programın dönüşümü, dünyanın değişimi ve 10 yıldır ekibi bir arada tutan bağ, tekmili birden onuncu yıl özel bölümünde.

Bir kere baştan söyleyelim. Çok keyifli bir program oldu. Melankoliye de değinildi ama nice keyifli anılarla birlikte ruh hallerinden sinemaya, Garip Zamanlar'ın eski bölümlerinden 2023 değerlendirmesine program su gibi aktı geçti. Programa damgasını vuran polemik ise 2023 yılının Booker ödülünü kimin kazandığı tartışmasıydı. Sonuç olarak ödülün hem Booker ödülü hem de Uluslararası Booker ödülü olarak iki farkli kategoride verildiği ortaya çıktı. 2014'te Evren İnançoğlu, Kemal Baykallı ve Sertaç Sonan'la başlayan Garip Zamanlar yolculuğu 10'unucu sene-i devriyesine bir ay daha yaklaşmış oldu.

Yaşama dair gözlemleri, edebiyata bakış açısı, yaşadığımız çağı nasıl değerlendirdiği, romanlarındaki karakterleri, Kıbrıs'ta araştırmacı yazar Orhan Kabataş'ın evindeki gözlemleri "beyefendi bir tartışma ortamı içinde" ziyadesiyle irdelendi. Kıbrıs'ın en çok dinlenen Türkçe podcastının bu bölümü demlene demlene dinleyicinin karşısına çıkıyor.
