    Speaker 1:
Hey, what's going on? This is episode three 36 of the it and the D show guests this week include Jason Bressler. He is the CTO Matt Turner. He is one of the head recruiters of United shore mortgage. They're putting on a career fair on March 4th over 300 open it positions, everything from coding to networking. They're going to be talking all about it. You're going to Snowmageddon in Detroit and we got a lot of funny stories and Dave, you may fire when ready. Hey, what's happening? What's going on? This is episode three 36 of the one and only it in the D show. We are broadcasting live here in studio one podcast. He threatened beautiful snowy Royal Oak, Michigan spot. The sales guy. That is Dave the geek. Randy. I do the Twitters is doing the Twitters, find us online it and the D. dot com and do us a favor. Give us a like on the socials, subscribe to us everywhere. Fine podcasts
    Speaker 2:
or sold. Hey, so what do we have? We got a the Anarbor event coming up on, uh, three, three, uh, I forget. I always forget the odd even thing. I should have that memorized by now and I just don't two years now. Yeah, I am. I, my brain refuses to commit that to memory. Uh, and then we had, uh, well the next one is, uh, the 19th that will be at the cozy lounge. Uh, and they are really kind of dorked about us being there. And not only that, they're named for one of the best burgers in Southeastern Michigan. Yeah. They were like one of the, yeah, the one of the top 10 burgers, right? Like, Oh my God, they're so cool. I agree. And I would like James [inaudible] from Mabel gray who was like, I think he's James Beard. He's one of the top chefs in, yeah.
    Speaker 2:
He like swears by their chicken biscuits. So like that honestly, God for, it's a little dive bar. It's a little townie bar, but they've transformed that they can do like kind of a cool little place, great little place. And we're looking forward to it. And, and you know, and then the last week we had our event at Woodbridge pub. Um, really? Well, that was the first time I remember being there. I haven't been there before, but I haven't been since my Wayne state days. Oh yeah. And, and like that place like just brought back tons of, yeah. It was phenomenal. Like love that place, love to go back. Everybody was like, it couldn't have been happier and it was yet another one. That's like, a lot of the people that showed up were like, Oh my God, heard about this place. Never been here. Really digging it.
    Speaker 2:
And they have decent sipping room and you know, and they have food as long as you don't want the chicken wings. No chicken wings. Yeah. Chicken wings are gone. I was in the mode, but then I had, I ordered that chicken one tons. That sounds weird. All over to that. And it's chicken egg rolls. It's like you take the bottom of chicken soup and you slab in an egg roll and it was actually pretty good anyway. Yeah. Looking forward to it. Looking forward to cozy. It should be good. Um, and then, Hey, uh, just on a personal note, I would be remiss if I didn't mention, um, Hey, rest in peace. Kelly Tucker, uh, great guy. Uh, local, uh, I mean he, he did, uh, stuff with us back in the raw radio X days. Uh, he was a sound guy over at the Ritz downtown at st Andrews.
    Speaker 2:
He did stuff out at diesel. Uh, Kate, one of our engineers actually went to graduated specs wait time. A lot of people touch a lot of lives. They, I was, uh, if you read his wall today, man, touching a lot of lives. Yeah. Great. Great guy. Gone too. Damn soon. Uh, so rest easy bro. So Honda, funny, yucky cheats. Nah, no show. Must go on, right. He would say the same thing. Don't cut the damn Mike. But one of the, uh, the funny race and I don't, one of the funniest tweets I've seen all week. Uh, basically I didn't even know that this was possible or this was a thing. Um, but basically it's an app powered car and this couple when basically in rural California on the mountain, like basically for a drive on the weekend. Yeah. And they lost cell signal cell coverage and their car Brecht.
    Speaker 2:
And it got stuck literally in the middle of the shit's villain nowhere. That was the best day Heather. So car will not go. And I, I guess this is where we live now. Right? But here's the stupidest part. I'm like, wait a minute, you're tweeting. So the cell phone works. So the first tweet they answer their own like stupid question. They're like, it appears though I do not have enough cell service to start. My only means of transportation. I do have enough to live tweet my struggle. So thanks for tuning in. I'll be here. And definitely like again, I was stupid. Like you can send out tweets but you know, what does the car need? Like just bandwidth requirements. Got it. Who died? Yeah. That's one of the dumbest things I did. Like I, I was going back to like, the one thing I could think of was like the old stories about like you don't know far superstar, uh, that had like the GPS tracking devices and cutouts cars, the low jacks and all that stuff on financed vehicles.
    Speaker 2:
Yeah. So just, yeah, just the bizarre I, yeah, I, it's just one of those weird things that like you don't really think through well they would think there's not full coverage everywhere. You, you know, I don't know. It did remind me though. I watched the worst photo. That seems like a pretty common shortsighted oversight of it. It, there isn't, there isn't a cell, there isn't a cell company that says a hundred percent coverage. Like they all say 99.9% or whatever. They, you know, there's always some weird pocket and weirdo they prominent use sprint or something. It's Bryant. Yeah, it does remind me of the worst. I think one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life this weekend and that saved something and I should've known, I should've known better. It was called cell. And you know, I think I've seen like the trailer for this, but I haven't actually watched it.
    Speaker 2:
I love me some John Q SAC, he's one of my top of all time, who's coming to town in April. He is for the free. I tweeted them to see if he'd come on the show. That's not going to happen. But whatever wishful thinking. We've got Anthony Michael Hall, my Mizel, you know, I'll shoot for the moon at this point. I'm Samuel L. Jackson was in it and uh, it was kind of like the all 11% on rotten tomatoes. I know. I go, there's no way it can be that cause it, was he tired of the cell phones on his head? No, no. I didn't get that bad. But like it was a, and then it was like 18% audience score. I go, there's no way it could be that bad. And it starts off like put, wait. Oh, but wait. Yeah. So he starts out like John Q six in the airport and all of a sudden, like, everyone that's on their cell phone is like, uh, killing people.
    Speaker 2:
Like right. Like, it's almost like Dawn of the dead wood Ving right. We're in the beginning. It's like that cool scene where like the outbreak starts and like the town's on fire and all this, so they go out in a remote remote, whatever. And if you were like open up a cell phone like so like cell phones became that VHS tape in the rain. Then the people open up their models and like get cell signal like [inaudible] and like then they like, yeah it ended there. Basically a guy handsome, they find this diner and the guy hands him like a flip phone. He says, dial this number when you need to save. And like at the end of the movies, like he calls the number and then he's like in this ring of people around the cell tower and now they're all going to [inaudible] and that was it, dude.
    Speaker 2:
I swear to God I could go. That couldn't have been it. And the credits are rolling. I'm like, I sat through this whole, I don't know, this sounds like a good cheesy movie date night. It's not the watch one of those. Like what have you heard the MST three K? No, I was gonna say my standard. No, because it wasn't, it wasn't like the Perato movies and all those stupid we, me and my wife watched some dumb one where like there was a beast in the sand and have you touched the sand? I was like, well floors, lava and you eat and, and at the end it came out of the sand. Was it the Sarlacc? I guess I'm going to stick with my standard cheesy date movie. Then a good snow. What's that? Oh, you haven't seen dead snow. Is it worse than Jack Frost? It's a, not that Michael Keaton one the horrible where the snowman kills people, but nobody thinks to light a fricking match Nazi zombies up in Norway.
    Speaker 2:
Come on. It's amazing. Nazi zombies. No, I did see the one that was the has a sequel red dead two red versus dead, which is Russian zombies versus Nazi zombies. What was the one Nazi Nazi midgets and later hosing or something. And there was like a movie that was like, I'd show it to him. I had to click on and I lasted about eight minutes. This is the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. That's outstanding. I'm kind of a weird week for hackers. Yes. Week. So, and I did, I found this interesting. Um, so the same hacker ran two exploits, um, against [inaudible] and managed to walk away. Well, what's, for those that don't know what's, what's DFI? It's a decentralized finance. So it's, you know, like, uh, all the cryptocurrency stuff that you got it. Got it. Got it. Um, and it's one of the, one of the, you know, the trading houses and walked away with over $1 million in Ethereum over the course of two transactions.
    Speaker 2:
But see, now explain to me this dumb dumb guy in me says, don't you, where do you cash that out if you stole it because it's tagged, it's marked,...

  • The Ten Commandments of Networking
[editorial note: This is the original version, as published back in July of 2009.  As with all good things, it's been updated over time.  You can find the most recent version here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/2697/the-new-and-improved-10-commandments-of-networking/ ]

As I sit here watching History of the World, Part 1 for, oh, it must be the 8,173rd time...it dawned on me.

If Mel Brooks can use the Ten Commandments to completely crack me up every time I watch his film, then surely I can use them to help those asking "What's networking?"

(it's when a bunch of people get together with a common purpose...and, I know...don't call you "Shirley")

Yeah, sorry.  I watched Airplane!, too.

Anyway, so as I sit here answering emails from folks after our last networking event on the 16th and those starting to filter in about our Pink Slip Party on August 27th (and, yes, watching old comedies that I've seen a bajillion times), I thought I would take the time to put my thoughts towards another Don't Be That Guy blog entry...because as Mel would surely agree...we've all met That Guy that breaks them.  And so I give unto you these fifteen...[shatter]...oops...ten.  Yes, TEN Commandments...for all to obey.

(and if you don't catch that reference, do yourself...and me...a favor.  go rent History of the World, Part 1.  Immediately)

    1.  Thou Shall Understand The Importance Of Networking. This one blows up in people's faces.  A lot.  We all know "That Guy".  The person that you've tried to get out to a networking event (ours or another) so that they can meet people.  Or maybe you just wanted to get them out for drinks with a few people from work.  Or maybe there's a recruiter that you invited them to come along for lunch and meet.  But they always have a reason not to go.  They're too busy.  There's too much work.  There's something else that needs to be done.  They don't want to.  Whatever the reason...they never seem to make it.  And then...and this happens so many times...suddenly they need to network.  They get fired.  They get laid off.  The company closed.  Whatever the reason...now they're the ones ringing your phone off the hook and filling up your inbox asking when the next event is, or can they have the name of that recruiter again?  The one that always comes to mind for me is a guy that I tried to talk into coming to a ITintheD.com event for seven months, and he always had a reason that he couldn't make it.  And then he got fired.  At the end of the day on the very day that his wife went into labor.  Guess who called me from the parking lot of the hospital the next morning as he drank a coffee after watching his son come into the world to make sure that the ITintheD.com event was still taking place the next night?  Bingo.

    2.  Beware of False Prophets. There are many kinds of networking events out there.  Some are designed to help you find jobs.  Some are designed to convince you to cash out your savings to start selling some freaky new juice to your friends and co-workers.  Some are designed to be a support group to let you talk with other unemployed folks to compare notes.  Some are introductory events for multi-level marketing "systems".  Don't get us wrong - if those events are what you're looking for, then we hope they work out for the best for you.  Just make sure you know what you're getting yourself into beforehand.  Just because they call themselves a "networking event", or "Job Fair" or even a "Pink Slip Party" doesn't mean that they're what you're looking for.  We've all made the mistake of not asking enough questions before attending an event...and it usually doesn't turn out well.  Remember - if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is, and don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel comfortable before showing up.  Especially when you're in an immediate need,

  • Episode 334 – Ming Chen, Augie, Eddie, Astronomicon Recap, and a Complete Trainwreck
This episode brought to you by the life lesson of "Dave should not drink on an empty stomach with bartenders".  Our post-Astronomicon episode is... definitely a departure from our norm.  No stories, just diving in with Ming Chen, Augie from Whiskey in the Jar who stopped by, Remy from the Tales from the Barside show that hung out in the studios after his own show was done, and a miraculous appearance by our buddy Eddie who finally left his damn house for once... I'd say listen and enjoy but, well, Dave's still apologizing to Bob for how rough this one is...

  • Episode 333 – Banking Security, Face the Consequences
We always love our chats with Adrian, not just because he's got phenomenal insights into internet and banking security, but he's also one of those people who always has about eighteen irons in fires at any given point in time from a creative perspective, and that lends him some rather unique insights into what he knows, what he doesn't know, and what he stumbles across in his endeavors that apply to multiple areas of his life.  So listen in...

Hey, welcome to episode 333 or three, three, three palindrome episodes shot. So I hate you're trying to draw a velodrome or palindrome. Which one do you go around in the world? I dunno. Oh, okay. Most of Raptor is episode three, 33 of the it in that he show we have a great guest in the studio. He is a, what I would consider a Renaissance man. He is a a game. You brought us Turkey legs. He brought us sausage. He did bring a sausage, but he uh, invented a board game. He has a children's book. He's a techno DJ. And Oh by the way, he was the vice president of cybersecurity at some bank around town. Um, so we're gonna, we've got Adrian in the house. We're going to be talking a lot of things. It's going to be a great conversation. Uh, some cool things we talked about in the green room.
Uh, and we'll start from there. Yay. So, Hey Dave, you may fire when ready.
Welcome back. Thank you for clicking play. This is the one and only it and that he show, we made it all the way up to episode 333 this is a kind of monumental because it's three numbers right in a row. It hasn't ever happened before and it'll never happen again. Oh, no way. I mean, I guess unless we start season two after 333 episodes of podcast, the second that's self report and 333 seat 333 episodes season that seems to grow. But we are broadcasting live here in studio one in podcast heats, right? And beautiful. Royal Oak, Michigan, Bob the sales guy, Dave the geek. Randy. I do. The Twitters is doing the Twitters, find us online it in the d.com and do us a favor, give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere.
Fine podcasts are sold. All right. What do we got? We got a, the Ann Harbor event is at the haymaker. Tomorrow's pressable passion. Dammit. My calendar says, Hey n****r. So I don't know why, whatever, uh, Tara or haymaker, I don't know. I'm just, whatever. Uh, so ignore me. It's possible. Uh, and then we will be at fantastic on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Astronomic con to what is my PR dude. I am, I've been doing that too. You have not had a drink and I, my problem is I've been doing, that's why it could be it astronomic on PFS principal's six, seven posts. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah. I did that last week. Right. So you'll get astronomic on this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Um, and trying to get, trying to get Robert Carradine, AKA Skolnick from friends Leonard's to do a drop. We'll just bully him to fail as a human. If that doesn't happen Pulliam until it happened, call him David
    [inaudible]
or I came soon, or take Anthony Michael Hall to H. I really still choked up about your brother's dad. He listens. Or we can take Anthony Michael Hall to eight mile. I don't know which would be better. Well, apparently he's coming with his girlfriend, so to speak. I'll take her with, I don't care. Whatever. Uh, and then I'll have my two crutches and then the 20th we'll be at Woodbridge pub. Uh, which, ah, good times indeed. It's one of those ones that's been there for so long and you forget that it's there. Like it's one of those Detroit bars, you know, apparently old Miami is 40 years old. I saw that. Yeah, they turned 40 this week. Yeah. So are they going to call it older Miami or a Cougar Miami notes? Yeah, I dunno. That's boogie fever. That's any bar in Birmingham is what that is. It's younger than me.
What the hell is that? Make me old. Uh, so I had an interesting, so, you know, I've been cropped up on crutches. I don't go anywhere really. If it's, if I go somewhere, it's gotta be a thing like this. Um, and so Saturday I'm flipping, my wife's never seen 1984 Terminator front to back. She didn't grow up a cable. Like, I remember this time we hung out at Gus O'Connor's in Rochester and it was eighties video nights. And she didn't say a word to me all night. Her eyes glued and I go, what do you, what? Like you said, you didn't even know. You haven't said a word. She goes, no, no, no, I, I'm watching. I have never seen any of these videos, Duran Duran, all that. And I'm like, okay, well we made that a thing for like the next year we're watching 84 time it. And I said, Hey, the new one's out on rental.
So she's like, F it, let's rent it. Okay. So I got dark fate, which is a haven't seen it. It's a pile of hot garbage. I'm going to throw that out there. It's no spoiler alerts cause I don't care when you make a movie this terrible, I can say whatever the hell I want about it. Go for it. Um, and then when we turn off dark fate, I shit, you're not T2 just starts. So didn't dark fate. Doesn't that pretend that it's T three never happened. Three never happened. Salvation in Genesis never happened. Okay. And it just, it basically starts over. Okay. Which I'm okay with at face value. So it starts, so I got schooled. So we had this huge argument at work and I'm bitching that. So I'm just going to out with it. I think the biggest argument from fan voices. And why don't you just keep sending terminators back and kill John Connor.
Right? Like do just keep it. I know they said that they closed the base, said they closed the portal, but the person that made another portal can make another portal or whatever, you know. Okay. Skynet was blown up and T2 so dumpster, I'm still referring to T one then when they said they blew up the, the, you know, the, you're only one time and it was done. I'm sure someone else could make one. Well they sent back three more Arnolds and one of them succeeded and murdered Eddie Furlong on a beach in Guatemala. Oh, okay. Right. So now I'm like all this time they say Skynet, you know, so like okay he's dead. So John Connor never existed. Right. Cause the future didn't happen. So why? So they came back and then it erased it and I go, but then I figured that out cause it's butterfly effect.
So then kind of from there, Eddie for long guys jumped forward. There's no John Kotter and then there's no terminators and okay, I'm fine with that. I'm going back to Reese banging Linda Hamilton like I go. So I go, you mean to tell me James Cameron made a movie about a ship, a movie about a chicken and an egg and a movie about blue people when they're with resources under their planet. That's really his career. I go cause it's chicken and egg. I go, well how does that work? Someone needs to explain this one to me because this makes no sense. Reese bangs. Lynn Hamilton makes John Connor, John Connor goes to lead the resistance against the the machines. Yes. And then John Connor sends Rhys back to save his mom. Yes. But how did John Connor, if Reese didn't get sent back to bang his mom, how would he known?
    Ah,
that again. Spawn was, I want someone, cause no one could cause I threw that one out there. I hung in there. Like you don't get how time travel. Explore. Probably like, dude, I've seen, I've seen. No. So I mean you've seen back to the future. I get it. You get a farmer's Almanac, you start betting on sports games, you become a millionaire. No. So you look at it, okay. So from a linear perspective, you have to accept that everything happens once first and, and so you can go from this. John kind of wouldn't be there, reset and come back as bang as mom. So maybe it's, well, and then so maybe the original again, maybe she just got knocked up by someone else and that's someone else's out the father. Well, but then that's someone else gets killed. And how did reset the Polaroid or her in the Jeep?
Uh, John Connor shies us. It's not recent. It's not smooth. I'll give you that. It's not if Reese isn't the father. What was the point of the begging in a cheap motel? Uh, [inaudible] to tell you if you know the answer to the question, it's fine. And I'm convinced I am dead on convinced that she made, she's married to Jane or she wasn't married to James Cameron. Yes. That she edited kind of like star Wars. George Lucas edited all the future versions cause 13 year old me remembers a crap ton of boobies from her on that scene. And if you watch it now, it's like lackluster at best. What were you watching it like on like the USA network? Wow. No, it was I, it was, there was booby, but it wasn't what it was when I was 13. So I'm like, I'm convinced like 13 year old, you might've had a hyper-sexualized realization if you're reading a lot of national geographic just before the movie.
This was a huge argument hit, but that was, that was the pause button. But my wife's real proud of me. You had a pause on for half an hour. I'm like, I swear there was born on me yelling at her about, she's like, you're such an idiot anyway. So yeah. You know, here's the thing, someone else bought the rights to Terminator and they just decided to correct it, do whatever they want, which is like, it's hot garbage and it's dead to me. Yeah. Like I said, I didn't even buy. I, although I did finally get around, uh, I sat down and watched it. Chapter two. Is that all right? So it's good. I am even more annoyed now that my 10 year old has seen this movie. Uh, that is not a movie that a 10 year old shit, well this was the one that you can assess any people cause they're all 30, like you can't kill a bunch of 12 year olds still flashes back to the kids quite a bit.
Um, and, and don't get me wrong, like it's good. It is not an incredibly faithful adaptation to the movie or to the book. Uh,...

Uh, I think we, we brought in about 50 ish people. Uh, not that person all there at five o'clock. Holy crap. It was weird. They were all there at five o'clock. It's in right in Eastern market. Uh, it's the perfect venue. I've do, I've gone ahead and booked once a quarter for the rest of the year for that place. I've, I look forward to going back there and I thank you to the staff or the parking lot. No. Great. Everybody loved it. And again, it was one of those things where people were like, Oh my God, I've never been here before.
Keep hearing about it. Keep meaning to go here. Yeah. I love it. I think the only, cause that's kind of the, one of the sidewalls of our meetings and I think the only complaint I heard was that some people's nav took them the wrong direction on Rio poll. Oh, that's fine. Yeah, fine. Whatever. Uh, but no, so, uh, the fourth, uh, is the Anarbor event. Uh, principal probably pretzel, but I was gay. Uh, so, yep. And uh, and then, Oh geez. And after that we will be at go figure astronomic con, uh, the following weekend, uh, or actually that weekend. Uh, and then our next event, uh, in Metro Detroit is going to be at the Woodward troub on the 20th. And yeah, that's the scoop. That's my story. I'm sticking to it cause I remember to set it up for the third Thursday. Not the fourth Thursday. That's fine.
It's fine. It's like saying I put him on the pepperoni pizza. I'm so stupid. Or put him on it to meet on the pizza. Just deal with it. Still felt dumped. My um, one of it is my favorite article of the week and this one hit home didn't hit home, but you read it and you're like, and it's basically called the day Microsoft office turned into malware and Microsoft, if you're not lucky dude, I'm trying to figure out, you're going to screw the pooch with this one. This is, this falls squarely into that whole like do they not remember 15 years ago will antitrust thing? Probably not. Well here, let me, let me start. Let me start. What's going on? Is it yesterday? Basically we got a office three 65 message center notifications by email and here was a change coming to the future version of pro plus.
It's basically roadmap number five, nine nine one seven for those keeping score at home, extension of Microsoft searching Bing to be installed to office three 65 pro plus customers. Basically it's starting with version 2002 for old three 65 pro plus. They're going to automatically and without your consent, install a browser extension in Chrome and Firefox. It sets your default search engine to bang. Yup. And you I can kiss my ass cause and for those who you know, who might not remember about 15 years ago, there was the whole antitrust litigation, uh, because Microsoft forced you to install internet Explorer wouldn't have any of the other browsers yet. Eight yada. And like basically everybody knew the running joke was you fired up. I, he once went and downloaded Chrome. Uh, and then you never used IEE ever again back then you downloaded Firefox or whatever. Yeah.
Well do you want to make G suite of thing? Cause this is how you make G suite of things. Oh for sure. A couple of things though. This is only enterprise customers. This isn't your, every, your mom and dad's office subscription at home. Nobody has office subscriptions at home office three 65, no radio. It impacts everybody from what I understand. No, it's just enterprise customers, enterprise customers. And there's a group policy that the administrators can push out that will prevent it from happening. It's all three 65 pro plus. Okay. And you can prevent it from happening. But the benefit of this is that it will search across your, uh, enterprise SharePoint and one drive and everything. So it'll show you relevant company results in your search term. So if you go search, are you really, are you really saying this is good? It's, you're taking that stance.
I'm not saying, I'm saying, you know, who had that technology, you know, had it AltaVista had that tech. Google has that tech. Yeah. But if it's integrated with your system, like this is, if you're running office, then you're using SharePoint and you're running in one drive and you want search results from those won't return. So the, it's an extension that can be prevented, can be removed. But the enabling it by default is the bad part. I'm going to quote Gretchen wieners. I've never done that before. Stop trying to make big happen. It's not going to happen. Never gonna happen. Did she say that or did the one with a mole on her cheek? I forget. I the one with the mall on her. Oh, what the hell is her name? Oh, dammit. I just wanted to say Wiener on the under the podcast. Of course you did.
Uh, so, but in that same vein, so Microsoft, you know, we talked about this last week, so we can have wieners [inaudible] nice. So you know, we talked about how they, you know, they, they dropped, uh, you know, Microsoft windows seven became unsupported until it wasn't, but, but then you have, what was it, Germany that paid, um, 900,000, 900 grand to keep it supported. Uh, and then even though they said it wasn't supported, they had to release a support patch for it because tiled wallpapers were broken and people weren't doing it. They're just like, no, like, it like really, like literally that was apparently the only thing that was broken tiled wallpapers and they had to issue a patch for it. Uh, your desktop wallpaper might display as black when set to stretch. It's Microsoft stretched, not tall. It's still, well no, it's affecting stretch wallpapers and fill a fit fill. Tyler center options are still being worked. Working on for a is why the computers at city hall have to go down for an hour tomorrow and Hamtramck so we can patch all of our windows seven so we can't stretch or yeah, come on. Hey, still better than the city who for the longest time was the largest single windows Emmy in solid A's.
Just saying. And then, Hey, let's just go for the trifecta. We'll just stick with the Microsoft team and get this story out of the way. Uh, 250 million Microsoft customer records leaked. Yay. Who's shocked? Anybody? Not anymore with anybody. Was it a, was it just an open file on somebody? One drive, 250 customer records spanning 14 years exposed online without password protection? Um, I don't even know where to start with this. Um, and like where do they come from? This thing's like a mile long book of, of w did you, did you see where the seat these things came from? Um, it's metadata. It's not all the personal crap was supposedly redacted, allegedly. Allegedly. It's, no, it, I'm, I'm quite sure it is everything that's out there. Um, so I, I did, I love this, uh, just because I've gone down this wormhole so hard, uh, the Disney app was far and away the most downloaded app in the fourth quarter.
And how has that news anyway, somebody knows. And it was the most uninstalled after everyone watched lion King the third time and Mandalorian was done in another, like, all right, I'm done. Ah, see lot, I think a lot of people were saying that and then nobody actually did it. Why? Cause like everybody I know got their free year through the Verizon reason. I haven't canceled YouTube after Cobra, Kai, because you're too lazy to go. Effing canceled. They know it, but not the dude. I told you I went down. So here's an, so actually, here's my bitch about Disney plus. Um, so, you know, I've gone through, I went back and started bingeing the star Wars cartoons, uh, as am I right now just for this rebels? I'm in the middle of resistance. Okay. So, so like it would have been nice to know that there was a clone Wars animated movie before there was a clone Wars animated show.

I feel comfy. Feel comfy at the end of the table here. Podcast. He traded beautiful Royal Oak, Michigan. This is Bob the sales guy that go in the worst Chewbacca impersonation ever. Dave the geek. Randy. I do the Twitters. Walker is doing the twin. Oh my.
I said your last C I D I forgot. I'm just kidding. Find a sunlight combobulated that too. If you don't know what I'm talking about. Randy's till we say, why didn't you save or why don't you only say my last name and no one else's, so I just used it a pause for like probably a good year at least. Yeah. Find us online it in the D. dot com. Uh, do us a favor. Give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine podcasts are sold. Yep. Yeah, so we've got our event Thursday night, uh, which is this Thursday night, not last Thursday night because I'm a moron and scheduled it wrong. I feel like I owned that appropriately. Uh, we will be at Detroit city distillery, uh, and then next month, uh, in which will be the third Thursday, uh, we're going to try a new venue, a funnel hangout called Woodbridge pub. A great little spot. Loves great. Dave's is are going to go to Woodbridge. They go, where'd you get drugged in the last night? He goes, I'm not that shallow. First Facebook post is were wasted and it's at Woodbridge puppy with REM. And who posted that?
Ran me. Oh, well yeah, I was there. Well, I told you what happened. It's like, cause last week's episode we were bitching about trying to find venues. And so I walked up to the bar and I'm ordering a drink and the bartender goes, Hey man. And he's like, you know, I listened to your show. And I'm like, and that's always a okay, why conversation? Uh, and he said, no, I just kinda cool by the way. He was like, you know, you guys were just bitching about, you know, needing, you know, venues to do stuff. Why don't you do one of your events here and say you can't say no. And then two seats was the owner of the bar who went, I'm sorry, what, what event would you like to do here? And I was like, Oh, it's this networking group thing. I'm like, it's basically we're going to bring some nerds in who liked to drink and hang out and talk.
And he was like, yeah, you should do that here. What's the date? And he like, went in the back, grabbed his book. So perfect. I've been there in awhile. No, it's, it's good color. Seriously. There's a bartender, listen to this. Yeah, we're doing it. And they're not charging us 200 bucks an hour just to be in their lobby. I'm good. Nah, screw everything about you Bulla Rama or whatever the hell you are. Uh, so dude, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm ripping the bandaid off this first topic. Dude. You want terminators? This is how you get terminators. No, no, it's not even, it's worse. It's, so Dave's talking about, um, it's from the independent and scientists create first living robots in major breakthrough made out of animal cells. Hold on. They're neither a traditional robot nor and known species of animal. It's a new class of artifact, a living programmable organisms.
Would they call it a Xeno bot if I recall correctly, cause you know, meaning alien but meaning Terminator and they've already, so they've already like, and here's the like, I dunno how far down in the article you read. Like yeah, they followed a little program task. Oh they pushed this little pebble around and you push this little thing around and then they started to learn and they started to coordinate and cooperate. You aren't terminators. This is how you get terminated, the three of them. And they created the new language and knock you up in one way. I see. Um, I guess the only good news is, is that they've taken cells from frog embryos and turned them into a machine that can be programmed as they wish that that worked out great in Jurassic park. It was, you know, it was the frog, the frog DNA that no, wait.
Yeah, there's no, there's not a tried and true history of why not to do this. Cool. It wasn't that a Roddy Piper film a hell comes to Frogtown one of the trauma movies, like from there might've been, yeah. Um, I don't understand what they would do other than military or sex. That's about the only things that I could think, talking about putting little pockets on them so they can carry you like medicine directly to where they need to go. If you want these frog bots people Oh, inside your body. The small, initially, initially they're very, very small. They're like nanobots carry medicine directly to the sales effected. I don't know that it worked in a, with Martin short movie. Um, wait a minute. They're nanobots, they're from frog. So you gotta you're gonna have a frog growing inside. You know, it's not going to grow. It's just going to be like a couple of cells.
No, it won't grow. It won't, it won't. It won't act like life and multiply or mutate at all. It won't. No trust us. And it won't be like ant man where they all like just like get into like the nooks, there'll be like little gremlins. Get into the nooks and crannies of like, uh, yeah, military planes and you know, more magic school bus. Oh. Which I'm not even going to start out how creepy that was. That was horrible. And Hey, if you're an OTA, a antenna user, which I am, I have several in the house. We've got a couple here in the studios, a rescan your rescan, your channels if you haven't already. Uh, we talked about this when it hit, I believe a year ago, uh, when the FCC sold off a whole bunch of frequencies, uh, to make room for some other stuff. Uh, so what channels can you get?
Dude? I'm at like 150. Like, no, from your antenna. Yeah. So, and don't get me wrong, like it's not like, so what it is, it's about maybe the size of the, like half of this. The, the headphone amp. Yeah. And it does have a sheet of paper and it says, okay, well no. So the ones that you put up in the window are that size, does it use your house wiring as conduit? And this sits on, um, it sits on the, on the tabletop right next to the, uh, the TV that I've got hooked into. Like I don't, you don't have to have like this particular one, you don't have to have near a window or anything like that. Um, you know, is the, basically it was a, I think this one was like 90 bucks as opposed to like the 40, $50 ones, which are the floppy ones you've got to put up on a window.
And so what other channels, cause you've got, you know, uh, there are networks, there are four different state Fox stations. Uh, there's like, you know, the normal Fox two, then you've got like a Fox movie channel. There's a Fox retro channel, which is like, and there's a game show network, uh, all the channel four channels, all the channels, seven channels, all that. I mean it's all the local channels, three plus channels. I mean there's a whole bunch of stuff you can pick up. So they said, uh, he said on his article that said, got laughing comment, which is a comedy and scifi content. Yeah, dude, there's a, there's a bunch of stuff out there that is still broadcasting OTA that, I mean, if you're like, and if you're, if you've cut the cord and you're not using this as one of your options, you're kind of dumb.
Well, so what's rescan I don't know what that means. So when you set it up, when you first like plug it into your TV, the first thing you have to do is you tell it, Hey, scan for channels. It's got to say, okay, what are all the signals when you get a new, when you get a new radio, but they've moved frequencies around for cell phones, spectrum and stuff. So you have to rescan because she doesn't move frequencies and it looks like it's going to happen again in March against him. Have to do this again. Probably another thousand channels are going to wind up moving. So yeah, I mean, and like I said, I mean I pick up channels, um, in India, Canada,...

  • Episode 330 – Caston Thomas, Internet Advisor, Dave Sucks at Event Scheduling
IMPORTANT NOTE: due to Dave not paying attention, the networking event this month is on the 23rd at Detroit City Distillery.  We know, it's always 3rd Thursday... he screwed up, it's a thing, move on.  That being said, tonight we're joined by Caston Thomas to chat about our recent appearance on the Internet Advisor show, as well as an upcoming seminar series he's doing about securing iOT devices and networks that you probably want to pay attention to...
Happy patch Tuesday. This a special recording of the IT in the D show recording a day late. But that's all right. We've got a special guest in the studio Caston Thomas in the house. We're going to be talking about all of the fun stuff that you, a and security that we just got off on. WJR to go home and home are thrilling experience on am radio. Yeah, yeah. We were talking about that and talking about security and property security. Uh, you know what, Dave, you may fire when ready going on. Thanks for hanging out. This is the one and only it in the D show. Broadcasting live here in studio three and podcast. He traded beautiful Royal Oak. Michigan has chaos. May have it happens. They say, is Bob the sales guy? That was Dave the geek. Randy. I do. The Twitters is doing the Twitters.
Find a some ways. Find us online it in the D. dot com. Do us a favor, give us a like on the socials and subscribe to us everywhere. Fine podcasts are sold. And so because I'm an idiot and I freely own it and I admit it. Uh, so the meetup for this month was not set up for the third Thursday. It was set up for the fourth Thursday. So it is not this Thursday. It is next Thursday, the 23rd. Uh, it will be at Detroit city distillery. Come on out. Hang. Should be a fun night. Love the venue. Love the liquor. It's a good time. I'm not gonna lie, it's big coming. Extremely difficult to book a venue in this town. It is, and we've talked about this for two years now. We're like, you know, places that, you know, we went for, you know, six, seven, eight years when nobody cared about them and nobody went there.
All of a sudden now they want, they got the a, they got the no, because they've got somebody booked a holiday play there and now they think everybody's got 1000 bucks an hour. My ass Russell, they booked an M and M video and how they think they can get top dollar, but like I called a, it's a new retro bowling alley in Royal Oak. That's shall not be named that has pull in the name. Um, I'm only like 200 bucks an hour just to show up. No food. No, I'm good. Thanks. It's kind of like, Hey, and I said, we can always just crash a joint. Right? Yeah. But I don't want to do that because then we, you know, the people ask, the thing is you need to have buy in from the front desk. Like, Hey, I'm here for it in the day. True. Whoa. What?
Yeah. Um, so like I go, Hey, there's going to be like 30 to 50 and flash mobs or so, 2001 we don't, do they need to die? Well, they know. I say this is the way I set it up. I go, we don't charge because here's the thing, I can understand what the venue is when you charge. Like, Hey, I'm going to use your 50 bucks to walk in the door and then I charge you 20 bucks. Like kiss my ass. Yeah. But I'm saying, Hey, we don't charge cover. We don't take sponsors. There's no speakers. Everyone's on their own for food and whatever they want to order. Um, we just need someplace to hang out. Yeah. Okay. It'll be 200 bucks an hour. Like for, for, for, for what? Bye-bye. Yeah, exactly. Cause you're so crowded on a random Thursday night that you can't use the additional business, you know, then smell you in the window. You know, if you're, if you're, if you know someone that's a bar owner, like literally that would want us reach out to us. Please. We're glad to hear about it. These phone calls, it's ridiculous. Like, or we'll just keep doing all of our events at whiskey in the jar. It'll be that simple. We'll just be there every, we don't have, do we have friends at Ember anymore? No. No. Rusty's still there. Rusty's, you're going to pork around.
Um, uh, I don't know. Maybe I just don't like that venue that I think it's, you know, nobody plays pinball, but it's just cool to have them in the background. Exactly. It's a fun spot. I'm sure we can find someplace. So the baby, I mean it's not anywhere convenient, but like dude, that arcade place and Frazier would like cut off their arm to have us come to that. Yeah. And speaking of that like major magic is making a comeback. They are, they're right there. Right around the corner from me. Here's an interesting, I never really, I don't think I ever talked to you about this. Um, when major magics said they were coming back and I happened to pop up my note on, on LinkedIn or Facebook saying, Hey, you know, invested in a brewery in the past didn't work out. I see you're coming back.
Want to know what you're doing with it. You wanted to see if you wanted to like maybe adult it. Yeah. Make major magics you know, for the nostalgia crowd. I mean Chuck E cheese serves beer. Yeah. And he's like, what's your intention? Like it was really bizarre conversation. Like, I wish I saved it. I wish you could read it. And I'm like, ah, I just want to talk to you. Like maybe we can have a cup of coffee. Well, what, what do you want out of it? Well, I know how much you were looking to. I go, I don't know what it is yet or what it wants to be, and I can't really give you a business proposal when nothing's, I'm not just sitting here on a bag of money looking to do something with like [inaudible] furnace here. I've already done that once. That's why we don't own a brewery anymore.
But then low and behold, maybe like six months ago, four months ago, he's like, Hey, are you still interested in? And I'm like, ah, ignore like you're such a weirdo. Like I didn't want nothing. So now apparently it's opening in like Chesterfield or something. No, dude, it's right around the corner from me. Oh, it's on, it's on gross back. It's 15 and gross back. It's in. So do you remember the, there was the taco bell, there was the abandoned taco bell and then the other building. So the, it'd be a crime. Yeah. So the other building was the old Riviera restaurant and that's where they was the Ram's horn. That was the, it was a, it's called Riviera. No, but it was a rent like long time ago, back in the old taste back when I was dragging the day when I hung out on the East side when I was stumbling at a chaplains and went to get French toast.
Uh, ya know, so that's, yeah apparently in there, I think they're opening in February if I recall correctly. Like not too long from now. They're probably just, they pay you. The thing is it's probably going to be just a Barcade and he's got like six of the stupid dolls and he's going to set them up. No, apparently it's again I'm just going off the articles I read in that kind of stuff cause I was, I was curious cause I like I've heard you guys, cause it wasn't here when I was here, but I've heard you guys talk about it enough that I'm just curious to grasp it next to the star theater. And apparently like everything that was in that old one was put into storage and they have pulled everything out of storage and, and loaded up the place except for like skee-ball and like, it smelled like, was like jeepers, it smells like feet and piss.
Like it's not theirs. They should just call it that. Phoenix. Nice pizza. That's actually probably a website. I'm quite sure. Smell the feet and Piz pizza then in the tokens. Um, but Hey, jumping in, uh, obviously today was patched today. We're, we're recording on Tuesday. If you haven't figured that out yet, today's patch Tuesday. And if you're working in a data center tomorrow, it's gonna be patch Wednesday. What's, you know what, I'm just gonna throw this out there.
Can we talk about the windows? Windows 10 flaw for 10 seconds? Sure. Yeah, I know. Right? So here's this. No, this is, to me, this is interesting because the NSA came out with this and the NSA hasn't done this in the past. The NSA has held things for themselves.
So apparently there is a pretty wicked windows 10 security patch. Uh, they just basically can expose users to surveillance or, uh, I believe it's with authentication. Yep. Um, but it's funny that back in the day, uh, they did, they did not, they held it back. They, they used it because they wanted that access. Right. So, you know, uh, wanna cry an external blue, uh, basically NSA exploited those for years and didn't say shit. Um, they basically, they develop hacking tools to exploit these holes. Um, and then they gave them to, or they were then found by Russian hacker groups called shadow brokers. Um, eternal blue still use to this day. Well and I think we all know that when we do something fine, but when the Russians do it, no, nah, no, no.
Um, but apparently no, this was a even like at work, this is a big deal where it's all hands on deck first thing in the morning. Uh, security teams, all the server teams. Um, you know, this is, yeah, this is like all hands on deck. So yeah, if you're in a data center and, uh, you know, tomorrow should be fun. Hey, I mean Sam a broadcaster just updated and added a new notepad function. So, I mean that was pretty cool cause that's something that everyone's been dying for. I'm just dried mouse. No to like add notes while you're, cause you don't have notepad or WordPad or anything on the computer. You're running it on, you need a notepad in the stupid, just stupid. Speaking of that, there was um, I was thinking, I don't know why I think this is funny all the time, but they did doodle for Google.
Yeah. And you can, um, so here's the thing. I don't know why this is funny. So here's the thing. I work, we have a thing at work called brilliant ideas and people could submit a brilliant idea and it goes in front of a panel and they either move forward with it and it could be something really simple. Like, Hey,...

All right, so even though like you're not the point guy anymore and Arbor is still tomorrow. Yeah. Greg and Greg are tomorrow a haymaker so check them out for the first one. Thing two will be at haymaker.
Yeah, and we've got to talk. Dave and I got to talk, or Randy, you can talk to with us, figuring out our year schedule. There's a few places around town that I wanted to have our offense. Chelsea's not at embryo anymore. I haven't talked to her in a while. Do you pay attention? Eh? Yeah. I've only been in the hospital since like November. You've had nothing. You had nothing to do with pay attention to people's Facebook updates, movies to eighties movies to watch star Wars movies to see. So speaking of, I will say a dude. So I have binged the hell out of like Disney plus I am getting every Penny's worth out of that. I ignored clone Wars and rebels when it came out. I did a kind of end sorta like Battlestar Galactica. I regret doing so now James almost one. Yes. Without a guy I want to do, we could do with these key and dude remember how like I was like, I was like, no, I'm not watching it.
It's a remake. Screw you. I'm not. And then I watched it. I was like, when it came on BBC and I was like, Oh Oh that was really good. I'm mad I didn't watch it. They are doing clone Wars is really good. I was taping all of them. I was watching them and then I was like kind of watching them half-assed. Then I didn't get into it. And by like the pop culture constipation where like the backlog was just too much to push out. Yes, clear my watch Q but there's just chosen considering giving up on like the termed reboot. Season two just really has a common interest. Riverdale season four is a hot mess. Like the whole show has been a hot mess. I'll never forget I was doing work on my laptop and my daughter, my 12 year old daughter, she might've been 10 at the time and all I keep hearing is Archie and Veronica and Jughead.
Right. And I'm like, what? And I look over and it looks like like nine Oh two one on Twilight and I go, what in the blue hell are you watching? Oh my daughter's obsessed. She goes [inaudible] and I go, those are Archie comics. And I like pull it up on my laptop. And then like, so like I met comma kind. I bought her an Archie comic. She goes, dad, these are stupid. I go, you watch raver? Like what? There is nothing in common between Taylor and that very quickly. I know, I'm like, you like her. I felt like I've never felt like more like the mom from better off dead. I'm like, but you like you migrate. But no. So, yeah, no. So I have a, I've been, I binged, I, I made it all the way through clone Wars. Uh, I am in season two of rebels.
Um, I don't understand why Disney Plaza and I post about this the other day, I don't understand why Disney plus didn't just buy the rights for tartar, cop skis, clone Wars, um, which came out years before, uh, the series that is on Disney plus how you watch that? 2003. Yeah, dude. And like end-to-end, like all of them together. It's two hours and 12 minutes and it's good. Like I'm, I was between two and three. It's clone Wars. Yeah, no, it's, the clone Wars was like, two was clone Wars. It's, yes, it's between two and three. If that. It's the bridge. It's in fact. So here's the thing. So clone Wars, the one that's on Disney plus does not completely bridge between two and three yet. Yeah. Season seven's comes, it comes out February 20th. Yeah. Um, but so that tarted Kowski version in two hours and 12 minutes completely bridges those two movies and was so good.
Like I, I w I was stunned. So this is, it kind of goes to like the dumbest headline I've read this week. There was a bunch of them, not the fart pill. We'll talk about that in a little bit because that was the dumbest nobody now actually I need to talk about that class. Of course you do real science, but like the fake star Wars arises. Skywalker streaming state see a steel user's credit card. What kind of a moron do you have to be? And I'm just gonna I'm, I am, I'm, I'm gonna, I'm gonna put it in that context. What kind of a moron do you have to be that you're going to throw your credit card info into a website that says, Hey, I'm streaming this huge movie that's still out in theaters right now. And yet you won't just go to the theater to watch it.
Um, Oh yeah, that's right. Well, they don't want to leave the house. You don't know who these people are. I am these people. Dude, you know me. If it's not, dude, it takes a lot to get me into a movie theater people. I just don't leave in general. Um, but it's the same people that put their credit card info to verify their age, where they're chatting with them. They're hitting up porn sites in the UK. Real girl that wants to have sex with just that with just them. Yeah. Not today. ISIS not today. Probably got too big on mountain doing that. Can't actually physically leave mom's basement with Jim [inaudible] works once in a while. Yeah. I mean it hasn't worked for me, but [inaudible] there was this guy in a forum that said it worked. Um, but no, so, but no. So I guess on the star Wars tip, dude, hold on, I gotta read this.
This is all stupid till, cause I, they got a quote from Kaspersky on recommends that movies and TVs fans to follow the following steps to be on the safer side. Pay attention to the official movies. Pop a dumb ass, pay attention to the official movie release dates. Don't click on suspicious links. This is those promising an early view of the film. Look at a download file extension. Oh my God. People are downloading the entire movie, like an exe to like click here to launch the player app or something. Right. Well it was back in the day was you go on like you watched like the shaky Russian cam, you know, and check the websites authenticity, you know, make sure that it's got an HTTPS come on. I mean that doesn't really mean much these days. Yes. Is free not as thin mask anything. Yeah. Um, but yeah, people are getting hit by it so much they to write on, on the star Wars tip, I dude, I am, I am looking forward to this.
I I want, I need, I must have the hundred 92 minute directors. Oh my God, yes. Of the rise of Skywalker bring it become how did that even become a thing where that's going to get released now if you haven't heard about this yet GJ because cats cat. So number one there, there were two great stories of cats that we didn't even talk that we didn't even put it make, didn't even make the list. Number one, nobody is going, actually there are three, number one, nobody's going. Number two, 10 year old saw cats. Number two. So many people are not going that while it's still in theaters. They released a new version to the theaters to hopefully make it suck less. Number three, the only people that are truly enjoying cats apparently are people that are high off their ass when they see the movie.
I told you my third Magdalena white and right. 13 year old. She's like, I go, do you? Yeah. What's a theater? I go, do you guys go see star Wars cause she hasn't seen it yet. Then my older one has, she goes, she goes, no, we saw him. Cats. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You needed your group of friends. Your child has not seen star Wars yet. Dude, I been crack go nowhere dude. You're lucky. I went that night too with you guys. I have no idea how hard that was for me to be in that theater. You could have told me I could have taken up with my kids. Eh? Gretchen went when she got a boyfriend, she went with him and 13 year olds. It's like that whole world.
He likes talking a with me, so I don't mind them so much. But that didn't apply to me. No, because it reminded me of talking wrestling with the one girl Gina, that I dated when I was that age. And I'm like, Oh, I know what he's doing. Slimy. No. So no, but this isn't our end 12 minute version of the rise of scour cause it was unprecedented. Who this hasn't is this been done? I've never heard of this. Especially talking about this early going, Oh by the way, we cut a bunch of shit, but we're going to splice it all back together and give it to you like three minutes after the end ga
