This episode wraps up Season 1 of It Might Get Weird the Podcast. Thank you so much for listening. Sara and Gary have had fun. It's been a pretty weird year for both of them. This episode reviews a bit of Gary's thought on the AAVMC Catalyze / Iverson Bell Conference he recently attended in Washington DC. Most of the episode delves into Sara's feelings with Finals week upon her as well as reflecting on the highs and lows of her life as she wraps up year 1 out of 4 of her Vet School career.

Unfortunately Sara was unavailable for recording this week. Fortunately, Gary was able to secure an amazing guest while he was at the AAVMC Catalyze Conference in Washington DC. This week he interviews Dr. Laci Taylor a current Zoo Medicine Resident at The Smithsonian's National Zoo. Gary wanted so much to learn about all the exciting things that Dr. Taylor is doing during her Residency, but that will have to come another day. Before that can happen, we need to learn how she got into this role. Dr. Taylor shares some great tips to plan ahead for post vet school options like hers, and does a great job at providing some motivating for when the odds seem slim. Thanks for listening.

If you only have time to listen to one recent episode, this would be a good choice. Sara and Gary got together in person to record this while Gary visited WSU's College of Veterinary Medicine in his role as AVMA Vice President, and to deliver a presentation about one of his most impactful mentors, Dr. Leo K. Bustad, to the Humane Animal Bond Club. It was a great opportunity for Sara and Gary to catch up. After Gary was in Davis California to attend SAVMA Symposium, he took a little detour to Folsom California to visit his friends Alysson and Dr. Marcus Dela Cruz, and to finally meet their dog Charlie (a good boye) in person for the first time. They were so gracious to let Gary stay with them, and to record this impromptu interview while there young son was napping. Their story of navigating a long distance relationship and negotiating options to support each other during the vet school years will hopefully resonate with so many that are figuring that out now, living through it now, or who remember their own experience with relationships during vet school. This should probably be titled, "Wait... You did what?" episode. Or the "Gary seems shell-shocked". Gary is definitely not on his A-game here. It's probably because he had never met his amazing guest Nurse Practioner Lauren Cabrera before he hit the record button for his interview. It could have been because Sara wasn't present this time either. Sara was off the grid for spring break camping along the west coast somewhere (hopefully we'll hear about that soon). 

Another reason that Gary was not quite on-point this week is because with each question he asked, he didn't seem to be able to process Lauren's amazing answers fast enough to be able to react and pivot the conversations. You do not want to miss this episode. Lauren's journey to this point - on the verge of starting vet school in the WSU CVM Class of '29 - is quite the ride.

Are you curious about the UK vet school system? Listen to this super informative episode with Guest Siena Mandy. Siena is a 3rd year Veterinary Student at the University of Glasgow College of Veterinary Medicine. She and Dr. Marshall have known each other through SAVMA events for a few years and, as she is originally from Washington State, she has been able to spend time at Island Cats Veterinary Hospital with Dr. Marshall. She was gracious enough to take time away from her studies to meet in person with Dr. Marshall on the historic main campus of the University of Glasgow to share a bit of her story of how she learned of, applied to, and has since moved to Scotland to study. This is a brief episode. No part 2 coming for this one. It does mean that we might need a follow up episode with Siena in the future, as they just scratched the surface in this episode.
