It Started With A Kick

This week we have the first of a double bill of Oxford fans, with Matt Gooderick who is one of the hosts of the ‘You Are My Oxford’ podcast so it will be no great surprise that the first port of call is the Manor Ground.

Johnny Nicholson, who recently announced he was calling an end to his time at F365 after 26 years of weekly columns. which amounts to over 3,000 pieces. His last column called for the abolition of the Premier League and a complete reset for English football which I’m sure many of us would agree has merit. John’s first foray into football was to watch Middlesbrough take on Hull so it’s off to Ayresome Park we go in 1972, on what I assume was a foggy Saturday afternoon in September.

This week's guest is the first German we have had on this podcast, football journalist, Rolf Hessbruegge. Rolf is a Schalke fan and his father took him to his first match against bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund with the idea of making him a Dortmund fan, but it didn't work out that way.

This week's guest is Ady Packham, who is one of the Albion Roar podcasters and yes he is a Brighton fan but It Started With a Kick is a broad church and everyone is welcome inside, even infidels and Seagulls.

This week's guest is the first Colombian to appear on this pod with the very un-Colombian name of David Arrowsmith. He has written a couple of books about football in South America including 2024’s NarcoBall - Love, Death and Football in Escobar’s Colombia and this year’s Killing Maradona - How Cocaine, the Camorra and Crime corrupted football’s greatest talent. So, as you can expect, David has a few tales to tell about the seedier side of South American football. However, our starting point is at Wembley in May 1988
