It Started With A Kick

Tom Rostance has worked for BBC Sport as main live text commentator for 10 years, in which he has covered some amazing moments in recent football history including the Agueroo moment in 2012*, then two years later the Mineiraco when Germany hammered Brazil 7-1 in WC semi in 2014 which must have tested his typing speed, as they scored 4 goals in a 6-minute span. Alongside those extraordinary matches, as a Northampton fan, Tom has also experienced some rather ordinary games and it is to the County Ground we head for Tom’s first taste of live football on Boxing Day 1991.

This week's guest is Marc Higginson a senior journalist manager at BBC Sport who has a book coming out in October entitled “Falling for Manchester City”, which covers a period in which City were going through some slightly less successful times than over the last decade or so.

Today’s guest is the very first Peruvian on this pod and I think I’m right in saying the first person born in South America. Welcome Luis Miguel Echegaray and although Luis has been a football writer, broadcaster and analyst for many years I first came across him during this summer’s World Cup when he appeared on 5Live’s Breakfast in America programme with another podcast guest Steve Crossman. Luis’ enthusiasm not just for the pancakes being served but also for football was infectious and allied to his in-depth knowledge, he became a must for this podcast. 
Luis is an Aston Villa fan and we will come on to quite how a boy from Lima ended up supporting the Villa in a while but as ever we are going to start with the first match Luis attended and unfortunately this game had a tragic background…

Before we follow John’s journey we will head off to Recreation Ground in 1970 for a 4th Division fixture between Aldershot and Darlington.
