Police say a man is recovering in a regional hospital after four people “approached him and began to punch and kick him without provocation” at about 3am on Friday. Officers responded to the intersection of Cayuga Street and Green Street at 3:11am and spoke to the male victim.

The victim told police he was not familiar with the four attackers, who police are describing at this time only as “four black males.”

The incident came a night before another man was stabbed just off the Ithaca Commons amid a flurry of assaults around downtown.

Police were called at about 7am Saturday and responded to a residence on Cleveland Avenue, where the male victim had fled after an assault he said occurred at about 1am as he walked through Home Dairy Alley, near the Ithaca Commons and the Green Street Parking Garage.

The victim told police he had been “confronted by at least four suspects who assaulted him unprovoked.” He ran to a friend’s residence on Cleveland Avenue and fell asleep, but woke up to realize he had been stabbed.

Tompkins County curbside recycling is delayed one day for the rest of this week following the Labor Day holiday. If your recycling pickup would have been Tuesday, it’s now Wednesday, and so on.

New York State Police investigators are looking for a motorcycle they say was stolen from a barn in the Town of Groton. According to police, “the motorcycle is described as a children’s sized mini motorcycle and stands approximately three feet tall.” The custom paint job “is purplish/blue and white,” and there are “ghost flames on the gas tank.”

The New York State Police are also “looking to speak to the individual pictured” in security photos from “an incident that occurred on July 14, 2018 in the Village of Lansing.” Check 14850.com for the photos and contact State Police if you recognize him.

TCAT has been awarded a $2.29 million public transportation grant that will provide three new electric buses and charging stations. The new electric buses will likely enter service in the fall of 2020, according to TCAT general manager Scot Vanderpool.

And a cold front and storms should break the heat wave on Wednesday night. A heat advisory is in effect until 8pm.

Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office says law enforcement activity in Newfield that drew the attention of residents “was concluded peacefully” on Sunday night, and no injuries were involved.

Lieutenant Daniel M. Donahue says the incident “occurred at the intersection of Millard Hill Road and State Route 13” just south of Ithaca and Treman State Park at about 9pm Sunday, “as a result of a domestic incident.”

The Tompkins County Health Department says they’re looking for a dog that bit a person on Saturday afternoon on the trail to Second Dam in the Six Mile Creek gorge area between Ithaca’s East Hill and South Hill, to make sure the dog doesn’t have a rabies infection.

According to a release from Tompkins County, “the biting dog is described as a German Shepard. It was on a leash with a gentle lead head collar. It was accompanied by two smaller, possibly black and white, dogs. The three dogs were being walked by a woman with dark brown hair.” The bite occurred about 2pm on Saturday, August 25. If health officials can’t rule out the possibility that the dog has rabies, the person who was bitten may have to undergo a series of rabies treatments that include painful injections.

U.S. Marine Corporal Christopher Bordoni died six years ago, and the 7th annual Bordoni Memorial Ride is scheduled for this Saturday, with a chicken BBQ to follow. The ride around Cayuga Lake will benefit Heel the Heroes, a non-profit that provides therapy dogs and dog training for veterans.

A 2008 graduate of Ithaca High School, Cpl. Bordoni was critically injured in a suicide bomber attack just weeks before he was to return home from his tour of duty in Afghanistan.

All riders and groups are welcome for the Cpl Christopher Bordoni Memorial Ride, and registration runs from 10am-11:40am at the Seabring Inn, at 330 Sebring Road in Newfield.

And the Ithaca Police Department is hosting their third annual community BBQ this Saturday afternoon at Conway Park. “Hot dogs, hamburgers, kosher, vegetarian, vegan options, and a wide array of other food will be available free of charge” organizers say. “There will be also kid-friendly activities such as face-painting and a bouncy house, as well as door prices & gift certificates generously donated by local businesses.”

August’s doubleheader bout hosted by the the Ithaca League of Women Rollers is Saturday evening, and 10% of proceeds will benefit the Advocacy Center of Tompkins County. Saturday’s event will feature a SufferJets bout followed by a BlueStockings bout.

The all-female flat-track roller derby league is in the midst of its eleventh season. The league has two teams (the SufferJets and BlueStockings) and a junior derby program that helps teach girls how to skate and how to compete in this increasingly popular sport.

Doors open at 6pm Saturday, August 4th at Cass Park, on Taughannock Boulevard (Route 89) next to the Hangar Theatre and the Treman Marina, and the first whistle is at 7pm.

And the Ithaca Police Department says the 100 block of South Quarry Street on Ithaca’s east hill is closed to vehicular traffic on Thursday. “Multiple local, state, and federal crime scene agencies” are on the scene, in the vicinity of the Collegetown Terrace Apartments and Gola Osteria.

According to a statement from IPD public information officer Jamie Williamson, police went to an apartment in that block at about 7:57am on Thursday morning “to check the welfare of a person who was believed to be suicidal.”

The person in question was found alive and transported to a local hospital for mental health evaluation, but officers on the scene observed “several noxious substances and chemicals” inside the apartment.

Three distinct cases of early morning vandalism at the home of an Ithaca alderperson, stretching from May 2017 to just last month, have been under investigation by the Ithaca Police Department for over a year with no progress. In all three cases, an unknown individual or individuals spray-painted over a “Black Lives Matter” sign outside the home of Second Ward alderperson Ducson Nguyen and his wife Amber Gilewski.

The couple’s signs were first vandalized in the early morning hours of May 22nd, 2017, when a blue “B” was spray-painted over the Black Lives Matter sign affixed to the porch railing.

Over a year later, identical Black Lives Matter signs were defaced on July 8th and again on July 21st. Video from home security cameras captured a man riding up on a bicycle and then walking up to the sign to spray-paint it.

“This is just a sign, but there are black people who have to deal with this type of bigotry on a daily basis,” says Gilewski.

Traffic on south hill was snarled for a couple of hours Tuesday night as a tractor trailer got stuck at the intersection of Giles Street and Hudson Street. Two heavy-duty commercial tow trucks were needed to free the truck.

Police say a 39-year-old Ithaca woman was arrested early Tuesday morning after the IPD SWAT team served a search warrant at her residence on Stewart Avenue, near the Cornell University campus. Aisha Smith was taken into custody after officers found “a handgun and a quantity of heroin that later tested positive for the presence of fentanyl.”

The stretch of East State Street from Mitchell Street to Cornell Street, which closed in mid May for gas main work, will reopen on Wednesday, August 1st, according to the City of Ithaca.

And the Ithaca Fire Department says they were called to a home in the Town of Ithaca to free a dog trapped with its leg caught in a metal chair.

A bulletin from Cornell University says the Cascadilla Creek gorge trail is closed “until further notice,” due to falling rocks. Cornell says the closure affects the gorge trail between College Avenue in Collegetown and Linn Street in Downtown Ithaca.

A bake sale hosted Sunday afternoon by Ithaca Vegans at GreenStar Natural Foods Market raised $1,008 that will go to RAICES, a Texas non-profit offering support to immigrant families and asylum seekers.

And farmers markets around the country will be able to continue accepting electronic SNAP payments, or food stamps, for purchases of fresh food by low-income members of the community eligible for benefits, according to SNAP to Market. There had been a chance the service would stop working on July 31st.

The Ithaca Bus Terminal was slated to close at the end of July, but City of Ithaca officials tell us the facility will stay open for now. After serving passengers traveling to and from the Ithaca area for more than a century, the transit landmark in the west end will be closing.

City of Ithaca chief of staff Dan Cogan tells us, “we are looking at keeping the buses at the west end station for a few months, until we have a permanent solution in place.” Cogan says the permanent solution is to bring the buses downtown to Green Street.

Ithaca Police are investigating a crash that apparently occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday on south hill. Police were called to the 200 block of Prospect Street, at the corner of Hudson Street, to investigate a reported “intoxicated person who was somehow seriously injured.”

According to Lt. Jamie Williamson of IPD, police responding to the scene at 2:40am Saturday found “a male victim who had significant head, neck, and internal injuries.” The unconscious injured man couldn’t speak to officers to tell them how he had been injured, and was transported to a nearby trauma center by Bangs Ambulance personnel.

Police are investigating the case as a possible hit and run motor vehicle accident.

Just 26 votes separate the two leading candidates with all of the regular ballots counted in Tuesday’s primary for New York’s 23rd Congressional District. Final results are likely to take several days, if not weeks, as absentee ballots are counted.
