Dr. Honda’s 10 Components of an Effective Apology
1. Accurately and fully acknowledge the transgression.
2. Accurately and fully acknowledge the harm caused by the transgression.
3. Take responsibility for the transgression.
4. Sincerely express guilt, regret, shame and/or remorse.
5. Explain why it happened without making excuses.
6. Offer remedy – if necessary.
7. Provide a plan to address the cause of the transgression to reduce the chance of repeat transgression.
8. Request acknowledgement of each component – if possible.
9. Request confirmation of accuracy – if possible.
10. Request forgiveness – if possible.
