Tero Isokauppila is the founder and CEO of Four Sigmatic, a functional foods company that wants to make the world’s most studied and nutrient-dense foods more delicious  and  easier  to consume to bring healthy upgrades into America’s daily routine.

Tero’s roots (or mycelium, if you will) are in Finland, where he grew up growing and foraging natural foods on his 13th generation family’s farm. He later earned a degree in Chemistry, Business, and a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition at Cornell University. In 2012, Tero founded Four Sigmatic  with  the  dream  of  bringing  a little Everyday Magic to the lives of all.

An expert in all things related to nutrition, health, and wellness. Tero is the author of two previous best-selling books: Healing Mushrooms, an educational cookbook from Avery Publishing, and Santa Sold Shrooms, a children’s book for adults about the magical origins of Santa Claus.

Karina Hollekim  is a Norwegian free skier and BASE jumper. She is the first female athlete to complete a ski BASE. 

In August 2006 she had a near-fatal crash after her parachute failed during a routine parachuting jump. She hit the ground at over 100 km/h (60 mph), and her legs were fractured in 21 places.  Although doctors said she would never walk again, after 20 surgeries she has recovered and was back skiing in 2007.

Her biographical movie 20 Seconds of Joy won both the Best film on Mountainsports as well as the People's choice awards at the 2007 Banff Mountain Film Festival.

In November 2011 Hollekim published her autobiography (co-authored with Odd Harald Hauge), The Wonderful Feeling of Fear (Den vidunderlige: følelsen av frykt) with Gyldendal Publishing.[

Who is Kristin Omreng?

Kristin is currently Heading the Global HR Function at PGS. She has a Masters in Business & Economics from the Norwegian School of Management. During her studies, she also spent time at Boston University.

Prior to PGS she held Senior HR roles in Aker Solutions, followed by taking on the Chief of Staff role at Høegh Autoliners. Straight out of school she spent a number of years in Executive Search in Hartmark Consulting and Mercuri Urval. Kristin is Norwegian, but actually spent almost her entire childhood outside of Norway.

In addition to her passion for work and long walks in the woods, Kristin is a dedicated mother of two Hennie (12) and Jacob (10).

In this extended episode, I am joined by Jimmy Westerheim, founder and director of The Human Aspect.

At the age of 13, Jimmy sat in a tree and planned how he would take his own life. From that moment on, his challenges became both his burden and his superpower. His life took him on a journey around the world via sports, Coast guard, international shipping and Doctors Without Borders. From there, he brought with him a wide range of experiences, but continued to ask himself why mental health was never part of the conversation.

From this, The Human Aspect and the Life Experience Library were born in 2016.
As the founder of THA and lead interviewer he has interviewed more than 750 people from all walks of life, who share their challenges, how they overcame them and tools they learned along the way. He has led THA from an idea to a global movement that aims to redefine mental health globally.

As part of an ongoing series focusing on business leaders, business owners and entrepreneurs and how they face adversity and build resilience with themselves and their  organisation, Markus Gjelseth joins me this week.

He is a  restaurateur who owns and operates, alongside his brother Joppe Gjelseth, three of Oslo's most known restaurants: Louise, Lekter'n, and Pastis.

In our conversation Marcus speaks to how the pandemic and the subsequent health scare, social distancing and lockdowns affected their company Mat og Drikke Gruppen and their three restaurants.

Markus speaks candidly about the very difficult road that he, his brother and their leadership team had to walk. During the pandemic, they had to make many difficult choices that included trade-offs, and not always knowing how those decisions would play out. The lessons learned were hard earned and quickly applied.

Markus talks about how the importance of transparency, communication, support, well-being and psychological safety were some of the critical components that helped the company to buffer and survive the pandemic.

"I was born and raised in a very good and loving family with my parents being both entrepreneurs within the restaurant industry. I started working doing the dishes when I was 12  years old and have been working in and out of the company since then.

I have a bachelor degree in business management , but first really learned about teamwork and leadership while sailing the pacific ocean with four friends for one year.

After trying and failing to start and run a company that was created to change the world education system, I went back into the family business and took over the running of the company together with my brother. Now we have been running  Mat og Drikke Gruppen together for 2.5 years, with two of them being during the pandemic."

Where we choose to place our focus dictates how we invest our cognitive energy. The big challenge is that we are not always conscious where we put the spotlight of our attention.

When we feel crushed by pressure or uncertainty, our focus tends to favour pessimism and negativity.

From my experience, when we are under pressure, we need to be selective of how we invest our attention. As our minds speed up, we tend to become too occupied with the outcome and too little on the effort needed to reach the outcome. Focusing too much on the result can be incredibly draining on our motivation. Especially when we know, there is a vast distance to cover before we cross the finishing line. The distance can leave us feeling overwhelmed.

The short game is a phrase I use to refer to the effort and actions we take in the here and now. The long game is the term I use to specify the future outcomes and goals we are trying to reach.
