Migration Watch Chairman Alp Mehmet says the student visa system has become a “scam”, allowing hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals to stay in the UK permanently, with over half never going home.

In 2024, nearly half of all UK visas were student visas, and new analysis suggests over 500,000 graduates have remained in Britain after their studies, a number expected to hit 1 million within three years unless action is taken.

Mehmet says lower-tier universities are financially “addicted” to international fees and are being used as backdoor routes to residency. Nigel Nelson joins the discussion on whether UK higher education is selling out its purpose, and its borders.
