Have you ever wondered why some people or organisations make it into the media, but your story is unheard? It’s because you’re missing a step. It’s called “public relations” or PR. It builds your brand, your reputation and your value. In fact, according to It’s PR Darlings hosts Greer Quinn and Jo Stone, PR has the power to change the future of your career or your business.
“PR is about sending the right messages to the right places at the right time,” Greer explained. “It’s not limited to just media stories either.”
It can be any communication between you and your customer or your audience. That can incorporate anything from a social media post or newsletter to a national print campaign or a TV news story. And it differs from marketing as it is earned rather than paid.
“What we do for a job is usually in the shadows of organisations and brands, even public personalities,” Jo said. "The work we do creates many of the compelling stories or commentary you will read, hear or see on all kinds of platforms. We help people polish the way they will tell those stories and we create the dialogue with consumers, staff or stakeholders that sets businesses up for success. And for PR professionals this means the focus, as it should be, is on our clients.”
Greer and Jo both started out as journalists and met while working at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), so they have an insider’s view on both sides of the fence.
They both now run their own PR agencies (Forward Communications and Sticks and Stones PR) but have come together as collaborators to produce It’s PR Darlings.
“We’re starting this podcast series because as PR professionals we find that most of the time people aren’t really clear about what public relations actually is, or what constitutes a newsworthy story,” Greer said. "So we’re talking to leading journalists and media experts about how they do their jobs, offering insights into a changing media landscape as well as sharing our experiences on the so-called dark side in PR.”
It’s PR Darlings is produced by Greer Quinn from Forward Communications and Jo Stone from Sticks and Stones PR.
