Summary
In this episode, Melissa McWeeny talks about consent, boundaries, self-care, and the importance of remembering that you don't fucking owe anyone anything.
She shares some of her own experiences with dating, sex, and learning to become more comfortable expressing what she wants—and what she doesn't want.
Consent isn't just about saying yes or no to sex. It's about understanding that you have the right to make decisions about your body, your time, and your energy without feeling guilty for how those decisions might make someone else feel.
Melissa discusses how easy it can be, especially for women, to make choices based on obligation, guilt, people-pleasing, or fear of disappointing someone else. She explores the difference between doing something because you genuinely want to and doing it because you feel like you're supposed to.
She also talks about the importance of knowing that consent can change. Saying yes once doesn't mean saying yes forever. Having sex with someone before doesn't mean you owe them sex again. Agreeing to something doesn't mean you can't change your mind.
These same ideas apply outside of dating and sex. You don't owe everyone access to your time, attention, energy, or life simply because they want it.
At the end of the day, your choices are yours.
You are allowed to set boundaries.
You are allowed to change your mind.
You are allowed to say no without providing an explanation that makes someone else comfortable.
And you are allowed to choose yourself.
