Helping me Draw The Line this week it’s Lexa Voltz who’s from Montreal, Canada and is now based in Nelson, British Colombia. She curates unique tech house sets by exclusively sourcing tracks from women-identifying producers and this is her way of taking a stand in an industry still grappling with gender inequality and overlooking women's significant contributions to electronic music. She has also begun to perform burlesque and hosts an all-francophone radio show featuring solely women artists.

This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge of 27-10-2024 in which participants are given two or three samples and are challenged to make an original track (any genre) utilising the samples.

This month the samples were provided by Increment and are:-

Sample 1 - Bass Thump (a one shot could be a nice kick or bass).

Sample 2 - Delayed old creaky door - a little creepy but Halloween is upon us.

Sample 3 - Vocal_nightcall_C - another unsettling sound is in in the key of C.

For Sample 1, the Bass Thump, I put it in Ableton's Simpler, came up with a simple melody (F-F-F-A#) and played it throughout the track as part of the bass sound design.

For Sample 2, the old creaky door, I chopped this and used it to create a creepy atmosphere for the trackin the main breakdown and from around 3:20. I also used the sample as is in the main brreakdown at 2:20, at 3:25 and in the second breakdown, at 3:50.

For Sample 3, the vocal nightcall, I put this into Simpler and played a brief rhythmic phrase, which you can hear from 1:20 and then again from 2:25.

Helping me Draw The Line this week it’s Luisa Houseworks aka DJ Luisa, a DJ, promoter and music producer based in El Paso in Texas. Originally from the state of Jalisco in Mexico, her career developed from DJ-ing at underground house parties. Her style transcends genres as her sound follows an inner spirit and groove that can surprise with switches from house to techno and from techno to jungle. In addition to her musical career, Luisa also manages the monthly podcast for the female:pressure collective.

Her entry in the recent Drumcode Mha Iri remix contest was runner up and her tracks have been played by artists like Kevin de Vries, Juliet Fox, Teenage Mutants and many others. Her DJ sets are a combination of old school sounds and modern elements creating dynamic driving techno sets. Rave Chant was released by Mavic Music on 27th August 2024 as part of a Various Artists EP entitled "Impressions Vol 3.'

It's a driving techno track which was first created for the Beat Collective Challenge of April 2024, in which participants are given three samples and the challenge is to create an original track in any genre using the three samples in any way you wish.

The samples for this Challenge were:-

The Gregorian Chant which I used in the Intro and the breakdowns.

The Plucked Melody which I used in the main breakdown. I separated out the voice from this sample, pitched it up and looped it through the main breakdown.

The Rave Lead which is also in the main breakdown and immediately afterwards.

Helping me Draw The Line this week it’s FSJ who are from Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The set is called "On Beauty." It’s a live set created specifically for the Draw the Line. Deeply moved by the show’s support for female musicians, their live set draws inspiration from Kahlil Gibran's poetry collection "The Prophet," using the chapter ‘On Beauty’ as a vocal sample to convey the message that everyone is whole and perfect. The project features a total of 10 original tracks, collaboratively produced by Fin, San, and Joe (collectively known as FSJ).and it’s dedicated to all women.

Helping me Draw The Line this week it’s O.P.Groover, a London based DJ & VFX artist. She’s DJ’d at various events all over London & Sheffield and been a regular at Glastonbury Festival Cornish Arms & Broke Britain bars the last few years. Earlier this year she made her international debut at Bass Boomtown in Tallinn. Her first track, a collaboration with breaks & dubstep producer agentCopy, called "SubGoesBoom" was released on One7Audio records at the end of July. Her first love is breakbeat but she does likes to mix up genres and her sets are always a journey through all manner of bassy tech house, sassy breakbeats and dirty techno. More recently she has been exploring a more introspective style, away from brash beats, and the mix she’s done for us reflects that.

Helping me Draw The Line this week it’s Fiona who is now based in Berlin. Driven by a passion to help people connect, share experiences, and escape the outside world she promoted her own parties in Jerusalem's underground scene, uniting diverse communities. After a year of success, she moved to Berlin to immerse herself in techno and electronic music and she fell in love with acid and trancey sounds which inspired her to establish the Acid Reflux Collective. In her sets she blends the raw intensity of underground clubs with the liberating spirit of outdoor raves.
