Madison homeowners breathe easy—your city property tax won’t climb next year, with the millage rate staying flat at the same level as last year. While the overall city budget soars to over $39 million, a 7.85% jump fueled by booming growth, your city’s share remains steady: around $1,224 annually for homes valued at $500K. That consistency? It’s held for two decades. Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler assures no cuts to services, pledging to keep Madison a top spot for families and businesses. From a few hundred thousand dollars in the ‘80s to today’s $39M+, this budget reflects Madison’s explosive rise—and its enduring appeal.

Jackson’s new budget, kicking in October 1st, brings mixed news for public safety: while it matches city revenue, both police and fire departments fell short of their staffing requests. Firefighters were hoping for 25 new hires to boost their plummeting fire protection rating — now a Class 4, which hikes insurance costs — but only 12 are approved. Police wanted 240 sworn officers, but the budget funds 237 — still 3 below their current operating level of 208. With federal grants tied to conditions and no reserve tapping, the city faces operational strain as both departments scramble to fill critical gaps.

Once part of a breeding program at Tulsa Zoo, she’s now the first tiger to grace Hattiesburg since Bunga’s passing, and staff are focused on giving her time to adjust before public meet-and-greets.
