Episode 1: Journalist and Daybreak editor Rob Gurwitt joined Samantha in the JAM audio studio to contemplate how the reporting and delivery local news has changed as digital media tools have upended traditional models. How can we strengthen the social fabric and encourage democratic participation in the context of divisive social media algorithms and a culture of distraction?
Show Bio: Media shape our lives in ways unprecedented in human culture. How do we understand ourselves and the world we live in differently as a result? What have we gained? Lost? What choices remain in our power in relation to media, and what’s at stake? “Mediated Lives” aims to engage Upper Valley citizens across diverse professional and demographic sectors to share their viewpoints on these questions and help illuminate a path toward building a better mediated future in the Upper Valley.
In our 19th episode, we hear about the myriad opportunities to build community in the UV - from poetry to knitting and beyond - as experienced by our guest, a recent transplant accustomed to the diversity of New York City and Berkeley, CA.
This podcast is intended to build bridges between community members by providing an opportunity to anyone who is willing to share their personal experience of inclusion or exclusion as a person living in the Upper Valley.
Our guest shares a challenging experience of community censure in a small Upper Valley town. Reflecting on the nature of community in places where they lived previously, including New York, New Orleans, and a small midwestern farm town, they consider the ways that Vermonters identify themselves through their shared culture and sometimes in opposition to outsiders.
