Apart from Jesus, we cant do a thing. Its easy to take credit for what God has done. There are moments in our lives when we are amazed at the grace, strength, and power of God. Weve cried out to Him for His provision, pleaded with him to turn our life or the life of a loved one around, asked Him to change or alter a situation and at times He graciously does. In the moment, we may thank Him and subsequently give Him glory but then, as people continue to thank us for our efforts, we easily forget that apart from Christ we couldnt do this.

Waiting. For many of us, patience isnt our virtueat least not when were anticipating something great. Whether we are anticipating graduating from school, a promotion at work, purchasing a home, awaiting a vacation, waiting to see a family member we havent seen in months, patience can be challenging.

Imagine being the disciples, who have been with Jesus, in His resurrected body for 40 days, who know He has defeated sin, Satan and death, who are waiting in Jerusalem for what is next. Thats all they knowwait. And they do so with prayerful obedience.

Witness. A word that terrifies many of us. How do we go about sharing our faith? What do we talk about? What happens if someone asks a question I cant answer? How can I be confident our faith is the true faith?

Luke writes Acts to track the effect the resurrected Christ has through His people who are empowered by the Holy Spirit. His ascension gloriously declares His continued rule. His commissioning let us know what we are to do.

What about me? In a day full of demandsschool work, aging parents, children with homework, friends needing assistance, a work load that never diminishesit can be easy to focus on ourself. When is my time? When do I get to do what I want? When is life about me? I need me time. Now Im not in any way suggesting that we dont require times of refreshment and rejuvenation. We do. We need to recharge spiritually, physically and emotionally. Yet, in our narcissistic day more of peoples lives are simply about them than they might realize or care to acknowledge. Then we think of Gods calling on our lives to grow in our faith, encourage each other and share what God has done in us with others. How do we even start?

Passion. At some point in our Christian life we have all experienced a fervor to grow in our faith. Maybe it was shortly after you were saved. You wanted to know more about who God is, what His Word says, how you fit into the kingdom and how you serve Him. You came to church praying God would speak to you, signed up to serve and did so sacrificially, you veraciously read the Bible and threw yourself at God in prayer. And life distracts us sometimes its just to survive. The business of establishing a career, providing for a family or raising children. Sometimes its the pursuit of education or advancement or success. The newness of your relationship with God is, at least at first, unintentionally substituted for other passions. You find yourself prioritizing other interests before your relationship with God.

It was 25 years ago, about a year and a half after I began pastoring James North, that I realized how important casting vision is. I have always and continue to believe, that of first importance is a vital relationship each of us desperately needs with God, which of course is intricately linked to sound doctrine but I didnt understand the importance of vision. God began to help me to understand the critical role vision plays in building His Kingdom. We need a vital and vibrant relationship with God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That relationship is built on the firm foundation of His Word in Scripture. Vison then calls us to grow in our Christlikeness so we are able to live selflessly in order to serve others, be burdened for the lost as we see our sin and need of salvation from Gods perspective so we are delighted to share the good news of the Gospel. Vison calls us to live off less so we can give away more, to not only see Gods hatred of injustice but our calling to eradicate it. Vision calls us to be the most welcoming people on earth as God is saving from every language, tribe, culture and tongue. Vision calls us to something together as the body of Christ that we cannot be or achieve on our own.
