According to Bruce Hills, President of Just For Laughs Toronto, content is the backbone of comedy and most businesses, responsible for driving sales.
Hills began his Just For Laughs career as a driver in 1986. Shrewd, and enormously gifted, he climbed to the pinnacle of Just For Laughs after holding numerous prominent roles within the organization including publicist, director of programming, VP of international television, COO, and president since 2018.
Today, Hills oversees all f the company’s English business properties across global markets, focusing on growing the business in all divisions, including its digital and televised content, such as Roast Battle on CTV.
Instrumental in establishing and growing the English-speaking portion of Just For Laughs Montreal, Hills, Bell Media, talent agency ICM Partners and a group of investors including comedian Howie Mandel acquired Group Juste pour rire – Just For Laughs French equivalency – after it was put up for sale following allegations of sexual assault and harassment against co-founder and majority stakeholder Gilbert Rozon.
I caught-up with Bruce and multi-talented, award-winning, Trinidadian-born, Brooklyn raised, currently residing in Toronto, Comedian, Jean Paul on the red carpet at The Canadian Screen Actors Awards where Roast Battle was nominated for best comedy series to discuss why content matters so much, what makes a joke funny, and lots more!
