In this episode of Between the Lines, I explore a question that has echoed across generations:
Who do we actually send to war… and who never goes?
From the Vietnam War to the current conflict involving Iran, this episode takes a deeper look at the patterns we don’t always talk about. Through personal reflection, history, and the emotional lens of my novel Who We Were, we move beyond headlines and into the real cost of war—on families, on futures, and on the people who never had the power to choose.
I also share my father’s story—how he was a conscientious objector, tried to take a different path, and was drafted anyway. It’s a reminder that not everyone who goes to war wanted to be there… but many didn’t have a choice.
This isn’t just about war.
It’s about people.
It’s about love interrupted.
It’s about the conversations we need to have—between the lines.
✨ I’ll be doing my best to bring you weekly episodes, all while working full-time, taking care of my college-aged kids, two dogs, two cats, and a garden… and somewhere in there, I’ll try to get some sleep.
I’m excited to hear your thoughts, your questions, and to start the conversations that don’t always get said out loud.

What happens when a novel steps off the page… and into sound?
In this episode of Between the Lines, I sit down with fellow author Rich Kopacz to talk about my novel Abigail—and a powerful new creative project we’re building together.
Rich has taken the world of Abigail and created an original audio scene (“Abigail’s Elegy”)—a moment not written in the book, but one that fits seamlessly into the story. Using voice actors, sound design, and immersive storytelling, this project brings a completely new layer to the reading experience.
✨ And this is just the beginning.
We are inviting authors, writers, and creators to join us:

What if your story could be heard… not just read?
Abigail’s Elegy is an original radio-style audio scene inspired by the world of Abigail—brought to life by Rich Kopacz and a talented group of voice actors.
This is not a scene pulled directly from the book…
It’s something more.
It’s a moment that could exist within the story—crafted entirely through sound, voice, and imagination.
🎧 No visuals.
🎭 No stage.
✨ Just storytelling in its purest form.
Close your eyes… and step into the world.
Every voice, every pause, every sound was designed to pull you deeper—
to make you feel the story instead of just hearing it.

In this episode of Between the Lines, author Jeanette Huffman reconnects with an old friend from nearly three decades ago, back when they were wide-eyed Air Force trainees at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio. Together, they look back on the nerves and excitement of Tech School—dorm life, military training leaders, and the friendships that carried them through those first months away from home.
Now, almost 29 years later, they reflect on how those early Air Force days shaped the paths they would follow. From laughter-filled bus rides to the hard lessons of discipline and resilience, this candid conversation bridges the gap between who they were then and the lives they lead today.
🎙️ Come along with me on a five-day Vegas journey that started out as a birthday celebration and turned into a truly unforgettable getaway.
In this episode, I share the highlights of our trip—cheering at the Tournament of Kings show at Excalibur, exploring the Shark Reef Aquarium where I even touched a stingray, and dancing all night to a live band playing nostalgic hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s at The Tuscany Hotel.
You’ll also hear about the powerful experiences of visiting The Bodies Exhibit and The Titanic Exhibit, stumbling upon a young boy playing a moving violin ballad on the street, and slipping into a hidden prohibition-style gem—the 1923 Bourbon Bar. We wrapped it all up with classic Vegas glamour at Vegas the Show and a determined mission to find one last bowl of hot and sour soup before heading home.
✨ This trip was more than just shows and sightseeing—it was a blend of history, reflection, music, adventure, and a reminder of the many sides of Las Vegas.

In this heartfelt episode of Between the Lines, author Jeanette Huffman shares how her beloved pets found new life in her novels. From Molly the dog transformed into a Friesian horse, to Buster the piglet, Mittens, Georgiana, George, Loki, and Mercy—each carries their spirit onto the page.
You’ll also meet Belle, the loyal companion, who comforts Isobel when Giana brings her back to South Carolina in Abigail.
These stories remind us that animals leave more than pawprints—they leave legacies.
Why do two people experience the same moment so differently?
In this episode, author Jeanette Huffman reflects on how our pasts—our memories, heartbreaks, and triumphs—shape the way we see the world. Bias isn’t always about judgment. Sometimes, it’s about perspective.
✨ What you’ll hear:
Finding Bonnie: Lake Michigan remembered with fear by one, freedom by another.
Abigail: Two young women in Charleston—Abigail seeing life through a microscope, Lila reaching for the whole world.
The Soul Keepers: Roman and Fatima—love and loss seen through different lenses of survival.
Who We Were: When Anna meets Neal, her mother sees risk, but Neal sees destiny.
Through these stories, Jeanette invites us to pause and ask: What lens are others looking through?
