  • Jen’s Lore Corner – King Kanai – Episode 011

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast.

New content started with Episode 010.

In this episode, I talk about the lore of King Kanai, the beloved true king of the Barbarians. The character was named after a real person.

Before I started recording this episode, I put together a blog post with everything I know about King Kanai. It has screenshots from the Diablo III game, and links to all my source material.

Jen’s Lore Corner – King Kanai – Episode 011 is a post written by Jen Thorpe on Book of Jen and is not allowed to be copied to other sites.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner – Valla – Episode 010

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast.

Episode 010 marks the beginning of brand new content.

In this episode, I review the lore of Valla the Demon Hunter. Her story is scattered through a short story, different parts of Diablo III, and an entirely different Blizzard game.

Before I started recording this episode, I put together a blog post with everything I know about the story of Valla.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Zunimassa – Episode 009

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In this episode, I dig into the little bit of lore we have about a powerful, influential Witch Doctor named Zunimassa. Everything we know about her comes from the flavor text of the Zunimassa’s Haunt set.

Before I started recording this episode, I put together everything I learned about Zunimassa in a blog post.

If you like, you can check out that blog post and follow along as I review the lore of the Witch Doctor known as Zunimassa. The blog post also contains plenty of screenshots of the Zunimassa’s Haunt set.

I first became aware of this particular Witch Doctor set during Season 6 when it was the “freebie” set that players received if they played a Witch Doctor and got that character through Chapter 4 of the Season Journey. (Somewhere in this episode, I said it was Season 7, but that is a mistake. I meant Season 6). In other words, it was the Haedrig’s Gift set for Witch Doctors.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Rondal and Marta – Episode 008

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In this episode, I talk about two NPC’s (non-player characters) who are in Bastion’s Keep. Rondal and Marta are a couple, and have been through a lot together. Their story weaves itself around what we already know about the history of Sanctuary.

Shortly before I started recording this episode, I played through the part of Diablo III where the player can listen in on what Rondal and Marta say to each other. To get their full story, you need to play in story mode, and make repeated returns to Bastion’s Keep.

Or, you can “stay a while and listen” to this episode.

As I went though that part of the game, I took notes and screenshots in order to make sure I remembered all the details. All of that got put into a blog post about Rondal and Marta.

The blog post has several screenshots and involving Rondal and Marta. I also wrote out all of their dialogue.

There is an item in Diablo III called Rondal’s Locket. It is a Legendary amulet. I did not mention it in this episode of Jen’s Lore Corner because I didn’t find the amulet until after this episode was recorded. (The blog post has a screenshot of it.)

The flavor text on Rondal’s Locket says: “To Rondal – When you carry this, you carry my heart. Love always, Marta.”

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Mayor Holus – Episode 007

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In this episode, I talk about Mayor Holis, an NPC (non-player character) that players run into when they go through the story mode of the game. The most interesting thing about him is that he starts out as an annoying character… and then grows into a much better person.

Shortly before I started recording this episode, I did a lot of research on Mayor Holus. I put it all together in a blog post that I used as a guideline for what I wanted to say in the episode.

The blog post also includes several screenshots from the different parts of the story I tell in the episode. In other words, you can find screenshots of where Mayor Holus stands, the dialogue between him and the player character, and a few NPC’s who talks about him.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Queen Asylla – Episode 006

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In this episode, I talk about Queen Asylla, a character that players don’t see for very long in Diablo III. If you haven’t played through story mode in a while, you might have forgotten all about her.

Before I recorded Episode 006, I put together a detailed blog post about Queen Asylla. I used it as the template for this episode. It includes everything I could find at the time the episode was originally recorded.

You can find in-game screenshots in that blog post, text of what Queen Asylla says to the player, and the text in her journal (that I read in episode 006). In addition, the blog post has my opinions of Queen Asylla’s fate and the quest that she sends players on.

My episode about Queen Asylla was originally posted as a segment in the Shattered Soulstone podcast. Since then, a little bit more about Queen Asylla has been added to Diablo III.  I have updated my blog post about Queen Asylla with more details about that.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Duriel – Episode 005

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In episode 005, I discuss the lore of Duriel. He is one of the Lesser Evils, whose work connects well with the awful things that his “twin” is doing. Duriel is the Lord of Pain.

Before I recorded this episode, I put together a detailed blog post that contains everything I could find about Duriel. This includes what players can find out in-game, as well as what the Book of Cain says about him. It also has some screenshots of where the player encounters information about Duriel in Diablo III.

In short, Duriel enjoys inflicting physical pain upon others – and also on himself.

This episode connects with the episode 004, where I discussed the lore of Duriel’s “twin”, Andariel.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Andariel – Episode 004

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In episode 004, I discuss the lore of Andariel.  She is one of the Lesser Evils, whose work connects well with the awful things her “twin” is doing. Andariel is the Maiden of Anguish and enjoys inflicting emotional pain on her victims.

Before I recorded this episode, I put together a detailed blog post that includes everything I could find out about Andariel. This includes what players can find out in-game, as well as what the Book of Cain says about her. It also includes screenshots of where the player encounters Andariel in Diablo III.

Overall, Andariel is a much more dangerous demon than one might think.

This episode connects with the next one, where I will be discussing the lore about Andariel’s “twin”.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Captain Rumford – Episode 003

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In Episode 003, I dig into the background story of Captain Rumford, an NPC (non-player character) that players meet in Act I of Diablo III. His story is presented in-game, but it’s not given to players in chronological order.

Before I recorded this episode, I put together a detailed blog post about Captain Rumford, which I used as notes. The blog post has screenshots of quotes said by Captain Rumford, as well as things that other NPCs said that contribute to his backstory.

In short, Captain Rumford did not start out wanting to become a Captain. He used to be a farmer, but could not continue in his chosen profession after some really bad things started happening around New Tristram.

  • Jen’s Lore Corner: Squirt – Episode 002

Welcome to Jen’s Lore Corner, a podcast about the lore of the Diablo video game series. This podcast started as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast. I decided to re-release those segments in their own podcast, with new episodes to follow.

In Episode 002, I talk about the small amount of lore we have about Squirt the Peddler.  She’s the little girl who sells goods to random, wandering, adventurers who come to the Hidden Camp. In this “tin foil hat” episode, I explain why I think Squirt is not a little girl at all – she’s actually an ancient god.

Before I recorded this episode, I took the time to write about Squirt. The post is titled “Is Squirt the Peddler a God?“.

It provides a few additional details that did not make it into the episode itself. You can also find a screenshot of Squirt’s Necklace (a Legendary Amulet) in that blog post.

As a note, shortly after this episode was released as a segment on the Shattered Soulstone podcast, someone pointed out that Squirt the Peddler was originally located in Caldeum Bazaar. Diablo Wiki says:

After Patch 1.0.4, Squirt had heard that many people bought potions at the Hidden Camp, so she moved up there. As of patch 1.0.6, Squirt the Peddler has also been found just NE of the waypoint in the hidden camp, and is the best vendor to sell all the trash acquired in Act II to.

Personally, I think my “tin foil hat” concept of Squirt still works. It sounds like the change of Squirt’s location was mostly done to make it easier for players to sell stuff when their bag got full while adventuring through Act II.

You can find more of my Diablo-related blogs at Book of Jen. They are all in the Category called Diablo III.
