  • Episode 21: Hire Internal Talent! featuring Michael Yinger

Do you manage a business?  Do you manage people?  Are you hiring?  If you are posting jobs and not getting traction with filling your jobs, the answer could be right in front of you!  Your existing employees are looking for mobility and if you don't have a retention strategy, your employees will be looking for other jobs.

If you have a team that has been running for weeks without a manager because you are trying to hire one, the problem might not be a hiring problem, it could be a retention problem!  You need to be promoting your existing workforce and tapping into their potential.

In this episode of Jess Get Hired, you will meet Michael Yinger.  Michael is a forward-thinking executive with over 20 years of managing global organizations and providing strategic guidance to C-Level professionals.  He is also one of the Co-Founders of ResumeSieve.com, an advanced AI-powered candidate evaluation platform that minimizes the time to find top candidates by ranking them based on the requirements you provide.

Hiring internal talent makes better sense.  It will boost employee morale, cuts down on training, recruiting, and onboarding.  Have you taken a look at your current company culture?  What are your employees saying behind closed doors?

  • Episode 18: Who F--Kin' Cares!? featuring Eric Harkins

Have you all ever worked in an organization where the leaders didn’t match the culture? A place where you loved your job, but your manager totally sucked at doing the one job they were supposed to do, which was lead and manage a team?

Special Guest for this episode is Eric Harkins, a motivational speaker, a consultant, and author of the book, Great Leaders make sure Monday Morning Doesn’t Suck.  We are going to have a blunt discussion with some adult language about leadership and the workplace.

If you don’t mind a few F-bombs and raw talk, then keep listening.

In this episode, you’ll get to hear Eric talk about how he helps organizations Get Talent, Keep Talent, and Grow Talent – which is the premise of his business GKG Search and Consulting. He spent 25 years in corporate America in leadership roles from manager to Chief HR Officer and Chief Administrative Officer before he decided to start his own consulting firm based in Minneapolis.

If your organization is suffering from negative culture, low employee engagement, high employee turnover, and unclear expectations, this will shed some insight on how Eric turns the concept of "LEAD" into actionable steps.  Also, if you are a high performer that feels like what you do or where you work no longer aligns with your goals, this episode was created for you!

Eric's book, Great Leaders Make Sure Monday Morning Doesn't Suck, is published by Forbes Books.  You can buy it on Amazon, Kindle, and online.

  • Episode 17: Career Fitness Tracker - CHEA Seed with Giselle Galper
CHEA Seed (Career Helping Expert App) w/ Founder and Creator, Giselle Galper
It’s a new year and a time when we all set our resolutions. Is it your goal to find a fulfilling career this year or level up in your current role? How are you holding yourself accountable? What are your current career goals? Do you have a way to track your career performance?
Think about it, Athletes constantly track their performance and have to develop strategies to achieve their goals, whether it's beating an opponent, finishing a marathon, winning more games, or performing better than they did in the race or game before.
Many of us track our health and diet using some type of app or smartwatch.
Investors keep count of their debits and credits as well as potential earnings, but business professionals do not have a means of keeping track of their career growth.
What if you could track your career performance from the convenience of your phone? I haven’t been able to find technology that can help me level up my career plans until I was introduced to CHEA Seed.
Meet Giselle Galper, the unlikely founder of a new career app!  CHEA stands for Career Helping Expert App and like the superfood with a similar name, Chea Seed delivers expert, personalized career help that is 100% digital.  If you need a career coach, you can now have one available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week at the fraction of the cost!
Giselle hasn't always been in the digital space.  She had a long career as a General Counsel before developing the app.  Her motivation in developing CHEA seed came from watching her immigrant mom struggle to advance in her career.  She vowed to find a way to help professional women, like her mom, achieve their career goals.
What is your career focus this year? To accomplish your goals, you have to be personally motivated and self-disciplined.  The app is a great way for you to stay on track.  Remember the reason behind setting your goals and think about your "Why."  Are you doing this for yourself?  Your Family?  Your Career?  Keep your eye on the prize!
Other ways to stay on track to your career goals:
Find support from those close to you.
Re-evaluate your goals and modify them as you go.
    Find a mentor
    Think long-term and short-term strategies
Write down your goals so you can see them
Show up everyday ready to do better than yesterday

  • Episode 14: Burnout featuring Anne Genduso

Since the pandemic last year, employers have been focused on employee health and well-being. Millions of people were laid off, leaving them with financial and professional insecurity. Working from home has added to challenges, as parents have had to learn how to work and teach their kids at the same time. Several people are finding it hard to separate work and personal life, which is creating tension and, ultimately, workplace burnout.

Anne Genduso, a certified executive career coach, discusses her burnout story, how she overcame it, the signs to look for, and how to manage through the slump.

    Job Burnout Symptoms can include:

    • A change in lifestyle
    • Lack of energy to be productive on a consistent basis
    • The feeling of disappointment with your accomplishments
    • Unhappiness with job and life
    • Substituting healthy habits and replacing them with alcohol, drugs, or eating more
    • Change in sleep habits
    • Causes for burnout:

      • Unclear job expectations
      • Lack of control
      • Culture of dysfunctional workplace dynamics
      • Highs and lows of activity - inconsistency
      • Lack of work/life balance
      • Risk Factors:

        • Workloads and working long hours
        • Profession of serving others - thinking of others before thinking of yourself
        • Little to no control over the work you do
        • Job burnout is not a mental illness, it is a mental health issue.  Since COVID, this has become a bigger issue.  There is a lack of employees to help with the workload, and many increasing their duties to cover for the gap is taking its toll.

Some ways to cope can include: spending time with people you care about, taking your PTO/Vacation, adding something new to your daily routine, blocking off time on your calendar and doing something for yourself, asking for help, and more.

Anne and I will discuss several ways to keep your mind open and consider options.  Burnout has physical and mental implications.  Time to recognize the signs.

        • Episode 13: Recruiter Phone Screens - Hello! Your next job is calling!
The phone screen is the very first step of the interview process.  Are you the type that gets intimidated or unsure about what to expect?  In this episode of Jess Get Hired, we will talk about the steps to help you prepare if you get a call from a recruiter or hiring manager.  A phone screen gives the company a chance to get to know you quickly and for you to learn more about them.  It is a casual conversation that lasts about 15-30 minutes to see if you meet the qualifications, learn more about you and your personality, see if your experience lines up with the job description and if you would be a good fit for the company.  This is also a chance for you to ask questions to determine if this is even the right company for you!
Phone screens don't have to be intimidating if you prepare for it!  We will share a few strategies and tips to help you get through this important step to get closer to the job that you want.
          We will go over:
Why a phone screen is a necessary step to the hiring process.
A recruiter's role in the phone screen
          How you should prepare?
Changing your voicemail if you are in job search mode
The Elevator Pitch - how to introduce yourself
How to answer questions about job history
Sharing what you are looking for
          The dreaded compensation question
Questions you should ask before hanging up the phone
Phone screens are casual conversations, so practice what to say in case you get that phone call!
An outline of the podcast and some practice samples will be posted at www.jessgethired.com

        • Episode 12: Your LinkedIn Profile STILL Sucks!

LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network.  Last year, I published Episode 3 titled "Your LinkedIn Profile Sucks," in which I discussed what makes a bad profile and offered advice on how to improve your online presence. Episode 12 expands on some of the previous tips by reminding listeners of some of the key components of your LinkedIn profile as well as new tips to help you build your brand.

Employers, recruiters, and other business professionals are looking to network, but they may be passing over your profile because it lacks attention-grabbing content that entices them to connect with you. I'll include quotes from polls I created based on various comments from my LinkedIn community.  So, listen closely because your comment could be featured!

          I will discuss:

          • LinkedIn profile photo - what photos capture attention?
          • LinkedIn Banner - Your billboard - how do you summarize who you are in a photo?
          • LinkedIn Headline - are you just generic?
          • LinkedIn Summary - what should you write here?
          • LinkedIn Experience - How far should you go back?
          • Most importantly, implementing some, if not all, of these suggestions, will assist you in making the most of this platform. You will begin to develop authentic connections to what I call "the greatest online networking party" by posting content, engaging in other people's posts, interacting with key leaders in your targeted industry, joining groups, and more.   Between episode 3 and this recent episode, let me know your thoughts on the tips I shared.
