Before the Mar-a-Lago raid somebody at the FBI sat down and made a to-do list, and item one was not the boxes, it was the family travel. This Saturday I follow that list all the way down the page, from the lawyers whose calls got traced, at least twenty one of them, to the checks collected from Americans in all fifty states.

Eliot Ness's men were called untouchable because nobody could buy them. This week the word means something else entirely. Five people turned up who nobody can reach. A former congressman placed a bet on whether he would get his own pardon, got the pardon, and cleared $823 on it. Senate Judiciary says a federal prosecutor pulled photocopies of 4,782 personal checks written by Americans who donated to President Trump, and under oath this week he said he would do it again. I am walking through all five, what each of them walked away from, and who was supposed to be stopping them.

This week the world came to us. In five days the Chinese president, the Iranian president, the Danish prime minister, Greenland's premier, Ukraine's president, and New York's socialist mayor all came to see President Trump, on our ground, during High-Level Week at the United Nations. He signed the Greenland agreement people laughed at months ago, put Iran and Cuba on notice from the General Assembly stage, and spent the back half of the week with the president of China behind closed doors. I am walking through what each of them wanted, what they had to put on the table to get it, and who is really holding the leverage now. The world came knocking.

Three people hold more power over your daily life than most of the members of Congress you actually voted for, and not one of them ever stood on a ballot. The Fed chair moves the number on your mortgage and the number at the register. The parliamentarian, a Senate staffer almost nobody outside Washington can name, froze the SAVE Act on a procedural call. The Air Force secretary went on the record saying we already have weapons in orbit. This week I am putting all three side by side, walking through exactly how each one was handed that much authority, and asking the question that town works very hard to avoid. Nobody elected them.

Twenty five years on from September 11th, I am not going back over the attacks themselves. Yesterday was the day for that. Today I want to look at the aftermath, and at what we handed over in the weeks that followed. Some privacy for intelligence. Some travel convenience for safety. Some civil liberty protections for security. We were told those trades would be temporary, and most of us believed it. A quarter of a century later a great many of them are still in force, and the surveillance powers sold to us to stop the next attack were later turned on Americans for political purposes. So this week I am asking what we traded away, what we actually got for it, and what we are finally getting back.

In June the Supreme Court sided with the administration 6 to 3 and said the government can turn asylum seekers away at the border. Now the bigger case is heading to those same nine justices, because this week the administration asked them to save Proclamation 10888, the order that shut the southern border to asylum claims, after an appeals court struck part of it down. The gate stays shut while they decide, and I am getting into how we got here and what it says about where this Court is going.

On May 16, 2017, one week after President Trump fired James Comey, the FBI quietly opened a criminal counterintelligence case code-named Oxferd Comma to determine whether the sitting president was directed by or coordinating with the Russian Federation. Baker and Priestap signed off, McCabe briefed Rosenstein the same day, and Mueller was appointed the next morning. Peter Strzok texted three days later that there was "no big there there." The case ran until April 9, 2019 and closed with nothing. Those memos are now declassified and public. I'm walking through what they say, who signed what, and why the timeline is the whole story.
