God chose Abram from the lineage of Shem, son of Noah. God told Abram to take his wife Sarai, and leave the home of his father's family, and go in God's guidance to another land chosen by God. Abram obeyed God and took her with him, but he also took his nephew Lot. God told Abram they would have a son, and the world would be blessed through their son. They believed God, even though they were old, and had never had children. When Abram was 99 and Sarai was 89, God changed their names to Abraham and Sarah, because they would be the parents of a son who would be the ancestor of a great nation.
