A Gatling-gun armored train rolling through the West Virginia hollers at night sounds like something from a foreign war, but it’s part of America’s own coal war story. I’m joined again by Darryl Cooper (Martyr Made) to pick up after Paint Creek and Cabin Creek and track the moment the conflict stops looking like a strike and starts looking like a battlefield.

We walk through the Bull Moose Special and the attack on the tent colony at Holly Grove, where families are living legally on private land and still end up under fire. From there, the fear spreads fast: rumors, militias, sabotage, and a state capitol that feels like an armed camp. We also dig into how company control reaches beyond pay and into daily life itself, including housing, speech, gatherings, and even access to medical care. That context makes Governor Henry Hatfield’s undercover trip as a doctor hit harder, especially when he finds Mother Jones gravely ill and detained under guard.

Then we head to Mingo County and Matewan, the rare non-company town that becomes the pressure valve for organizing and confrontation. Daryl lays out why Sid Hatfield becomes a folk hero, how the eviction campaign sets the stage, and how a street-level showdown with Baldwin-Felts agents turns into the Battle of Matewan. If you care about U.S. labor history, Appalachia, the West Virginia coalfields, or the road to the Battle of Blair Mountain, this is a key chapter. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review with the biggest question you’re still wrestling with after listening.

  • Return to a "Well-Regulated Militia" - Brandan Buck

Thanks to our channel sponsor: ExpatMoney.com/Jim. - get your free Plan B report today. Supporting our sponsors, supports the show. Download your free guide today. ExpatMoney.com/Jim

Brandan P. Buck is a research fellow in foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute. He is a historian of domestic opposition to U.S. foreign policy in the 20th century, postwar conservatism, and the national security state. His research concerns the impact of an activist foreign policy on American society and civil liberties, the history of U.S. strategic thinking and its implications for contemporary politics, and the politics of foreign policy.

The National Guard is supposed to be America’s backstop, not a permanently scheduled force for overseas rotations. That tension sits at the heart of our conversation with Brandon Buck from the Cato Institute, a historian and former Guardsman who argues the National Guard cannot serve two masters: the governor’s duty to protect the state and Washington’s demand for global deployments. We trace how the citizen militia tradition shaped early American defense, why the Constitution is wary of a large standing army, and how the militia model slowly transformed into the modern Guard after the Militia Act of 1903.

From there we get practical. Brandon breaks down what it actually means to be activated under Title 10, why deployment timelines balloon when you add train-up and unit cohesion requirements, and how the “Total Force Policy” after 1973 turned the Guard into a routine manpower pool for the Global War on Terror. We talk about the real costs: hurricane response shortfalls when units are overseas, the strain of living two lives, retention problems, and the off-clock planning work that quietly turns “part time” into something else entirely.

Then we pivot to solutions and current events. We explore Defend the Guard as a war powers pressure point, the legal and political reality that Congress rarely uses the one tool that can actually stop a war (funding), and how the Iran situation exposes the modern “imperial presidency” dynamic. We close by looking at likely constraints on escalation, the logic of hot containment, and why maximalist goals without a credible strategy can drag on for months.

If this made you think, subscribe, share the episode, and leave a review. What should the National Guard’s job be, and who should decide when it goes to war?

  • Fauci Pleads the Fifth - Iran Shows Escalation Dominance - Bibi Goes to Washington

Thanks to our channel sponsor: ExpatMoney.com/Jim. - get your free Plan B report today. Supporting our sponsors, supports the show. Download your free guide today. ExpatMoney.com/Jim

Fauci pleading the Fifth over basic questions is one of those moments that feels funny for about three seconds, then turns into something darker: a reminder of how hard it is to get straight answers from the people who shaped daily life during COVID. We roll clips from the Senate hearing and talk through what’s actually happening legally, why Rand Paul’s approach matters, and why a “gotcha” headline is not the same thing as accountability.

From there, we get personal. We talk about the lockdown era, school closures, social shaming, and the way vaccine mandates rippled through workplaces and the military. When a new parent asks for time, data, or even just breathing room, what should a sane system do? We connect those stories to the bigger trust problem that still hasn’t healed, especially for families who watched kids lose critical years of normal life.

Then we change gears into foreign policy: Netanyahu’s Washington trip, polling that shows Americans souring on him, and the growing risk that the Iran war becomes an escalation trap. We break down why the Strait of Hormuz matters, what it means when the US does not respond immediately to strikes, and how attacks on oil infrastructure and Iraq’s PMF can widen the fight fast. If you care about COVID accountability, US foreign policy, Middle East escalation, and energy security, this conversation puts the pieces on one board.

Zelensky lands in Washington as the Senate lines up a major sanctions vote, Netanyahu is in town with his own agenda, and Trump is signaling something that sounds a lot like an Iran off ramp. We slow the tape down and listen to the tells: who’s claiming credit, who’s applying pressure, and why the timing feels less like routine diplomacy and more like a coordinated push to lock the US into the next phase of escalation.

We also put Lindsey Graham’s legacy where it belongs. “Neocon” gets used like a synonym for “war hawk,” but the deeper pattern is about power: elite confidence, permanent intervention, and the habit of treating other people’s lives as pieces on a board. We connect the dots with a Shakespeare frame (Iago as the trusted insider who manipulates through fear), then ground it in policy reality through Graham’s record, including his opposition to the Post-9/11 GI Bill and what that reveals about how some leaders view the military and the public.

From there we get practical and specific: the proposed sanctions package is not just a Russia story. The 100% tariff threat hits countries buying Russian energy, and the list includes major US partners and key Indo-Pacific players. That is economic warfare with real blowback risk, especially if it pushes rivals closer together. If you care about foreign policy, US national interest, the Ukraine war, the Iran conflict, sanctions, tariffs, and how influence campaigns shape what leaders think they “have to” do, this one is for you. The scariest part of modern war isn’t the footage, it’s the spreadsheet. When stockpiles get low, strategy starts getting rewritten in real time, and the public usually hears the polished version last. Today we break down fresh reporting and public comments suggesting the U.S. “operational pause” against Iran is tied to shrinking inventories of critical munitions and missile defense interceptors, plus the political pressure building ahead of another high-stakes Washington visit from Netanyahu.

We walk through Mike Waltz’s TV remarks line by line and explain how qualifying phrases can acknowledge depletion while still claiming everything is “fine.” Then we zoom out to the deeper issue: leaks, accountability, and why the American people should not be asked to bankroll or fight a campaign without clear goals, clear constraints, and honest updates. If war powers live in Congress, why does so much of this feel like it’s happening behind closed doors?

The second half gets blunt about the culture that fuels escalation. We call out chicken hawk punditry, the lazy line that troops “knew what they signed up for,” and the dehumanizing rhetoric that makes bad decisions easier. Finally, we dig into the numbers driving the entire story: Patriot missile burn rates, JASSM usage, Tomahawk depletion, and the defense industrial base reality that production cannot magically surge overnight. We connect all of it to deterrence, U.S. global posture, and oil prices that can hit American families fast.

If you want clear-eyed analysis of the Iran conflict, U.S. military readiness, missile defense, and what low stockpiles really mean, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who follows foreign policy, and leave a review with your take: should this pause become a real off-ramp?

A ground operation in the Iran war is starting to sound less like an unthinkable idea and more like a decision someone might actually try to force through. We walk through why the odds are rising, what escalation models suggest comes next, and why the real danger is not just combat, but the economic and political blast radius that follows disrupted oil and shipping routes.

We get specific about geography and logistics, because that’s where war plans live or die. We explain why a landing tied to the Strait of Hormuz would be brutally hard to sustain under fire, why an airbridge into limited landing zones becomes predictable fast, and how going static to hold airfields or bases can turn American troops into easy targets for indirect fire. We also flag the “not where you think” angle: Bab al Mandab, the Red Sea chokepoint, and the role Djibouti’s logistics hub could play in a backdoor attempt to pry open global trade lanes.

Then we turn to leadership and honesty. We react to a tense Senate exchange over claims that Iran was “combat ineffective,” break down what that term actually means, and connect it to Iran’s long-running asymmetric approach built around drones, missiles, and exploiting weaknesses in air defense and sustainment. If you care about U.S. foreign policy, military strategy, and the real costs of escalation, this one is a must-listen. • Prof. Mohammad Marandi- LIVE from Tehran, Iran

Thanks to our channel sponsor: ExpatMoney.com/Jim. - get your free Plan B report today. Supporting our sponsors, supports the show. Download your free guide today. ExpatMoney.com/Jim

A single sentence like “a head for an eye” can turn a conflict into an acceleration ramp. We sit down with Professor Mohammad Marandi, joining us live from Tehran, to test Washington’s talking points against what’s being felt on the ground and what’s actually driving the escalation cycle across the Middle East.

We start with the Rubio clips and the gap between public bravado and strategic reality. Marandi lays out why Iran’s deterrence posture is built around indigenous missile and drone capability, hardened underground bases, and protected command and control, and why legacy U.S. basing in the region can be uniquely vulnerable in a modern drone and missile environment. We also talk about how narratives form in U.S. media, what Americans tend to miss about Iran, and why learning the history matters before the next “solution” gets sold.

Then we move to the part that should worry anyone who buys groceries: critical infrastructure. If the target list expands beyond strictly military sites, the spillover hits energy markets fast, from the Strait of Hormuz to tanker traffic to the knock-on effects on oil prices, inflation, and supply chains. We connect that to international law, proportionality, and the moral hazard of treating infrastructure and civilians as leverage.

We close with U.S. domestic politics and the NDAA, focusing on Section 219 and the “kabuki theater” of must-pass votes. If you’re frustrated, we give you a clear next step: call Congress, pressure the Senate, and don’t let performative outrage replace real accountability. The weirdest wars don’t just happen overseas, they warp everything at home, from what we’re told to what we can afford. Matt Hoh joins us to break down new reporting on suppressed US casualty numbers, the steady drip of leaks and battle damage assessments, and why that kind of information control usually signals a deeper failure. We also dig into why diplomacy keeps stalling when military escalation is treated like a negotiation tool, and how that convinces Iran that “coming back to the table” only happens after extracting more pain.

From there, we get concrete about tactics and risk. We talk through Iran’s apparent precision targeting and adaptation, why air defenses and refueling aircraft are such tempting targets, and what it means when US forces are pushed farther from the fight. Then we zoom out to the energy shock side of the war: Bab el-Mandeb, the vulnerability of global shipping lanes, and how the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is being drawn down while leaders talk like this can run for years. A supply shortage is one thing; the destruction of energy infrastructure is how recessions turn into depression-level damage.

We also take on the surreal domestic messaging coming out of the State Department, including a new “communism” scare centered on Cuba, and why that kind of rhetoric can become a pretext for going after political opponents. The thread tying it together is the pressure Americans already feel: inflation, inequality, and the sense that the system is rigged. We close with the part that never makes the talking points: moral injury, betrayal, and the ongoing veteran suicide crisis, plus what it looks like to get real help and check on your friends.

Seventeen dead US service members is not a talking point, it’s a flashing warning light. We walk through what changed over the weekend as the US-Iran war climbs the escalation ladder: more casualties, more damaged equipment, and a pattern of strikes that look uncomfortably precise across Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait.

We zoom in on the operational story beneath the headlines. When air defense units, hangars tied to helicopter operations, mobile systems, and key maintenance facilities get hit, it raises the question of how the targeting is happening and how quickly. We talk Patriot and THAAD vulnerability, the limits of interceptor stockpiles, and why concentrated, static US installations are ideal targets for drones and ballistic missiles. We also dig into Yemen’s announced naval blockade against Saudi-linked shipping and what further disruption near major maritime routes could mean for energy prices and the world economy.

From there, we address the political temptation to widen the fight by blaming outside actors or chasing escalation for “revenge.” We discuss why “finish the job” isn’t a strategy without a defined end state, and why the most credible de-escalation option left is to remove targets by pulling troops out. We also call out the circulating claim that Iran is “considering” a ground invasion of Kuwait or Bahrain as a fear narrative that can bait an even bigger mistake.

A train ride into coal country turns into a one-way door: company guards on the cars, no food, a gun in your face if you try to step off, and then the “job” you were promised disappears the moment you arrive. That’s the kind of pressure cooker we’re walking into as we reach the fighting phase of the West Virginia Coal Wars and the Paint Creek Cabin Creek rebellion.

We pick up with the United Mine Workers of America and why organizing southern West Virginia was uniquely brutal: company towns, isolation, scrip pay, and mine guards who treat families like targets. From smashed homes and midnight searches to forts and machine guns posted across the hollers, the operators try to crush union recognition through intimidation. That strategy produces the opposite result, driving miners to arm themselves, disrupt operations, and treat guard patrols as enemy units.

Then Mother Jones arrives and the story turns electric. We talk about why she terrifies politicians, how she rallies miners while still warning them not to clash with US soldiers, and why her framing of labor rights as American rights matters when public opinion can flip overnight. We also connect the lesson of outside agitators, federal intervention, and the Ludlow massacre’s message that corporate power can spill straight into the state.
